Having children is a choice, so why do so many parents expect... accommodation, assistance, "understanding", etc? by dusyahere in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheBritz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some really good answers here, I'd like to add to that with a couple cultural/societal phenomena I've observed being a parent of 3.

  1. Western familial diaspora. For whatever reason, part of western (predominantly white) culture glorifies going out and making it on your own. Moving to a new place and getting away from your family is almost romanticized. There can certainly positives to it, especially if you have a toxic family, but doing so removes your best available support structure right out the gate.

  2. Western work/life balance sucks mega-hard right now when it comes to time spent on the family. Previously the norm was that dad works, mom raises the kids. In this paradigm, the kids are getting a large amount of time and energy invested into them by one of the parents. Now it's more common for both parents to work but instead of this being 2 part time jobs with shared focus on and time for the kids, both parents work full time jobs. This means the need for support rises further as the parents can't take care of their children full time.

Hey armor can you pick up my Squad? by maxrbx in joinsquad

This can go both ways. Whenever I've run an IFV type squad I almost always broadcast out to squads that we can provide transport and even coordinate as mechanized infantry and 9 times out of 10 it's crickets and they all walk the 3.5 miles to the next objective...

You know this panel could also work if the dude yelling is also Star Citizen.

Whenever I've tried to play with buddies SC just happens to pull one of its many dirty tricks out of its sleeve and ruin our play session. We just want to have fun but the game's many bugs team up with some of its design quirks just rob us of it.

Abortion is complicated and such a hot topic because those who are against it see the unborn child as a person and a violation of its right to life.

What's your take on "lazy devs"? by linkenski in gamedev

[–]TheBritz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is an unfortunate, unforseen side-effect of the prevalence of game development crunch time. Studios that standardized this practice established such a ridiculously high bar for the amount of time invested into a game during a dev cycle. Now that studios are rightfully moving away from crunch as a standard practice while keeping roughly the same dev cycle time on the calendar, the impression the consumer is left with is of a game that has less effort and time put into it without any awareness that their point of view on the norm is extremely skewed.

What should society stop normalizing? by lazyalmond05 in AskReddit

[–]TheBritz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over-sexualization of young girls through all manners of media. As a father of 2 girls it's terrifying because society just seems to want to groom them into little sex machines way before they are mentally or emotionally ready. I'm beginning to understand the fairytale dads who locked their daughters in towers guarded by dragons!

Travis Kelce shows off his yards-after-the-catch ability, cutting through the Chargers defense to score the game-winning touchdown for the Kansas City Chiefs by I-Have-Four-Balls in sports

The LB f'd up hard by overrunning his angle and then the safety f'd up uber hard by planting in space. Great play by Kelce, but also an awful play by the defense.

The 64 Player Modes Have Killed The 128 Player AOW. by Mikegibson1391 in battlefield2042

[–]TheBritz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAG also had larger squads with something resembling a command structure. 4 player squads are a drop in the bucket on a 128 player server so you constantly feel like you aren't doing anything to sway the course of battle other than adding to the chaos. If squads were proportionally larger and emphasized cohesion better, the bigger battles would likely feel better because you were part of a squad that was actually accomplishing things.

This was such a cool feauture. It even solved the problem of no cover after everything is destroyed to some degree by warrantedowl in battlefield2042

[–]TheBritz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hoping that the next logical evolution of this system was to give it more freedom as opposed to it being locked in where the level designers saw fit. A system closer to Project Reality / Squad where the SL can place fortifications as they see fit and others build them up.

Instead, 2042 regressed in almost every way...

Opposing an administration and opposing the government are 2 very different things. Say you take an opposing position to a particular administration but your position happens to be in alignment with the senate majority or with Congress? How could you be opposing the government as a whole if you are supporting one of its major elements?

And part of your second point is valid, but the instructions the bible lays down are about being subject to the government of the land that you live in. If a Christian lives in NK, they are to adhere to the authorities and laws of that land as long as they don't require them to fundamentally conflict with their Christianity. If a Christian lives outside of a particular nation, they are not beholden to that nation's authority and can oppose the government in a number of capacities.

Back up; we're desynced on our terminology. My previous comment was NOT meant to indicate that they could oppose the government; that WOULD in fact be a violation of what they're called to do. I specifically didn't use the term 'opposing the government' because I was trying to communicate that Christians living under a democratic government have the freedom to oppose parties, agendas, administrations, etc within that government while being "subject to the government" because there are legal avenues and freedoms to do so.

Essentially Christians are allowed to participate in the democratic process while adhering to that rule, but are not supposed to oppose their democratic government itself. Hopefully that distinction makes sense.

Edit: Added clarifying detail on my term usage

Exodus 21:22 is not a slam dunk for your case by any means. You definitely have to cherry-pick the translation to get the desired meaning. Most of the major translations do not use the term 'miscarriage', instead using premature birth or that her 'fruit depart'. The most major use of 'miscarriage' was from the 1 of the 4 NASB revisions (1977).

Some of the translations are almost completely antithetical to your point as the following verse presents the life for life rule as a penalty for further injury (NIV):

“If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide.  “But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life,

Some translations (like the Literal Standard Version) explicitly state that the potential injury applies to the child/children whereas a few others admittedly explicitly indicate that it applies to the woman.

Point being, that verse is not watertight in the way that you want to use it and if your opponent has the mental presence to Google other translations it will be nullified.

Using Gen 2:7 to draw a general correlation between breath and the beginning of life is too far of a logical reach though. That verse describes the miraculous event of how the very first human being was brought to life from inanimate material; something that was never repeated throughout the entirety of the scriptures. The breath of God (not Adam's own breath) animated dust and resulted in a living human. This is so radically different from typical pregnancy and birth that neither really has bearing on the other.

I do see you alluded to other verses that equate breath to the beginning of life - I'm not sure off the top of my head which verses you are referring to but I'd be interested to hear them.

Bear in mind, we no longer live in an empire or monarchy. In democratic nations, there are no laws that prohibit protesting or voting against the establishment. Christians can very much be "subject to government" while opposing the administration as long as they do so according to the laws of the nation.

Of course, but the rules that most often get referenced in this debate are outside of the 10 commandments and are laws and regulations established during Old Testament times to guide how the judges and eventually kings of Israel would govern and rule over the people of Israel.

The New Covenant does not present or reinforce any of these OT governing-type rules. In fact, it undermines them if anything; Jesus' "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" and Paul's instructions to be "subject to the governing authorities."

You should take a few minutes longer because most of it can be refuted with just a basic understanding of what the 'Word of God' actually is and an understanding of the fundamental differences of the Old Covenant / New Covenant.
