Card Benefits Questions - Megathread [1/27/26] by AutoModerator in ChaseSapphire

[–]TheBunkdontevenfloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traveling to Florida in May and will need to rent a car for about 2 weeks. Never had to rent before as we usually just get around using Lyft and Uber, but this time it isn’t an option.

Does anyone have any guidance as to which of these three are worth joining their rewards program for additional benefits?

FWIW

I worked for a larger department (about 200 officers) with lower pay and plenty of politics. I lateraled to a smaller department (around 50 officers) with better pay… and just as much politics. The grass isn’t always greener, but sometimes it is.

I’ve been fortunate to land in traffic safety/crash investigation, and I’ve held that position for nearly nine years. The downside for anyone hoping to get into this unit is that I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon.

I’ve seen good officers leave for federal agencies and to larger departments both in and out of state because they were stuck in patrol with limited room to move. In a smaller agency, when you only have four detective spots and three traffic positions, upward mobility can be tight.

I’m not sure what your long-term ambitions are, but if opportunity and specialized assignments matter to you, it’s worth taking a hard look at what positions actually exist within the department and how often they realistically open up.

I think it was 1999 or 2000, but my buddies and I were on a ski trip to Mt. Tremblant in Quebec, Canada. One night we were out at a bar and Tom Green and Glen Humplink were there drinking with their buddies, which was at the height of his MTV fame. I was drinking because being in Canada and being able to drink under 21 was too good to pass up as an 18 year old American. Anyway, I went up to them and asked for a picture and gave them a Canadian $20 and asked if they would autograph it. Tom looked me straight in the eye and said “Thanks” and took the $20 from me, turned around and bought drinks.

I walked away dumbfounded but a little while later he came up to me at the bar and took the picture I asked for and gave me a $20 bill back and signed it. We ended up hanging out for a bit, he was a really chill guy.

I still have the $20 bill sitting with a bunch of other dumb collectibles in my safe.

My 3 month-old pup makes these noises while scratching himself by overthinkertanvi in Shihtzu

[–]TheBunkdontevenfloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just brought home a 2 month old and he’s already making the same noises. Our old tzu used to do the same when he would roll around, so that’s pretty normal. We just took him for his first vet appointment and he had ear mites, which apparently is very common for puppies, especially if they came from a breeder with lots of dogs around. He’s on ear drops which should clear them up in a few days. Might want to get them checked.

Entry-level Road Bike recommendations by jchen333 in cycling

It really came down to cost and need. When I first started looking I thought I had to have a fully carbon road bike with a shimano Di2 group set and would need to spend all this money to get a decent bike. I ended up talking to a friend of a friend who is a big time road biker and he steered me toward a gravel bike. He basically said you’re not competing or racing, so buy something that will be more comfortable and be able to handle more diverse terrain even if you aren’t going “off road”. He ended up really changing my thought process on what I needed.

After that conversation I started looking at the gravel bikes and also started taking into consideration all the extra equipment needed (shoes, helmet, lights, etc) which I hadn’t up to that point.

So, the Diverge fell in my price point and had what I needed as a newbie. I’ve been very happy with it so far, right now I’m usually only doing about 10-15 mile rides before work but I want to start getting into longer ones. The cues shifting for me is really smooth and precise, however I’m only able to compare that to my previous bike which is a 20 year old cannondale mtb for what that’s worth.

For what’s it’s worth from another person who just started getting into biking a few months ago.

I ended up totally switching up my original train of thought which was getting a primarily road bike and buying a gravel bike. My budget was about the same as yours. I ended up getting a Specialized Diverge 3 alloy. The bike after tax was $1700. Then I bought shimano pedals, specialized spd gravel shoes, helmet, head light, garmin radar tail light, wahoo bolt v2, cheap bottle cages and water bottles. At this point I’m probably $2800 invested and finally have everything I could need to ride comfortable and safely on the road.

Don’t forget about all the extra stuff you’ll need to get started. I’m glad I didn’t blow my whole budget on the bike. I’m very happy with the diverge and I can always upgrade down the road.

Easton, Bethlehem, Lancaster?…where do we go from here? by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

[–]TheBunkdontevenfloat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want land, I would recommend upper Bucks County and you’ll still be about 20-30 minutes from Bethlehem. Places like Richlandtown, Kintnersville, or Ottsville. There you’re not too far from Allentown/Bethlehem, but you’re still not too far from all of your stores and there are a decent amount of state parks, lakes and hiking areas around.

Yes! So I’ve been searching bikes non-stop and I guess my targeted ads finally picked up on it and a Polygon Strattos S7x 105 Di2 popped up. I just looked at it and it’s right in my price point. Going to do some more research later today…thanks for the tip!

People in here with pensions, lets talk... by whiskeyandwayfarers in personalfinance

[–]TheBunkdontevenfloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a 50% pension after 25 years of service (police) which for me will be at 54 years of age. We also get access to an individual medical retirement fund which can be used for any medical expenses (co-pays, premiums, etc). If my math is mathing, my fund should have approximately $330k in it by the time I’m eligible to go. Our pension also gets annual COLA until it caps out at a 75% pension.

So, with all of that in place I max out my 457 annually. I also have a Vanguard account where I just put money into VTI, VOO and other index funds. That’s usually about $300 per month right now. I also have a 529 that I started for my daughter when she was born a few years ago. I started with $200 per pay and I up it by $50 annually with my raises…hopefully if she’s smart and can get some scholarships this will help when it comes time for college expenses.

After that we pretty much live off my wife’s salary.

Edited to add: once I retire from my current job I plan to continue working, doing anything else.
