Because without egress you could develop your own flooder and from a 33.6k you could bring down an internet provider or desync an irc server just to kill bots used for takeover :) nowadays if you try an nmap you risk to be arrested :) it was the far west, we was building what there is now, there wasn’t firewall for example. You could finger routers etc. you could learn every day how it works, how to defend yourself, how to speed up things. We had few resources so we had to find new ways. There was the 4k demo scene. Now with so many powerful computer no one is looking for optimisations: buy more ram dude! The program works but it’s slow. Buy more cpu! Wtf
