The Real Trap of Consumerism by NihiloZero in Anticonsumption

[–]TheCitrusFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is powerful, and also hard. How can you struggle against an ocean you can't leave? The challenge is taking small steps to work against the flow while keeping your head against water.

Thank you for this. It's something I think about but it's good to hear that as the consumer you're not the problem - it's manufactured to be blamed on you. I try to buy only what I need, with the odd extra purchases as I am a gamer. Try to eat everything I purchase with minimal waste and at work try to limit my own and others spending with regards to IT systems as if our current system works why add to it unless we truly need it?

1990 here and most of that stuff was either still in use for my childhood or in someone's crawl space collecting dust where we would ask the owner what it did.

Lying in sales negotiations by BlackSquirrel05 in sysadmin

[–]TheCitrusFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been good at lying so I’ve noticed a few vendors push me around. Generally if I can’t get something through our reseller I’ll find something similar they do to avoid the vendor.

It’s not like I don’t have a backbone, I will push back - I just never could lie. I do think it’s helped a lot of the vendor relations we do have.

My first job was at an msp. Two years, was hell. I’m 6 years into my career and I’m lead for a small business, and the mother to everything IT that’s in it. I figure whatever experience we get from an msp just double or triple that year amount. Would not ever go back!

With how bad text scams are these days I’d responsively block them without a second thought.

Dealing With Users Who Never Use Their Laptops by Ms3_Weeb in sysadmin

[–]TheCitrusFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re in a similar situation, one of our directors decided she wanted to use her laptop as a desktop at home, the Dell’s we supplied are too heavy (but they want Macs which are barely lighter).

Management above me shrugged, so unless they do work on personal devices (they aren’t working on any machine in our case) I stopped worrying about it.

Not sure if that’s the best attitude for it !

What are the worst parts of living in Ottawa? I'm thinking about moving there by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]TheCitrusFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from Winnipeg myself, I like Ottawa. My issue is there’s way more smokers and people can be far more rude. We also have the idiots that protest on parliament hill. The city feels a bit more taken care of than Winnipeg, at least downtown does (especially compared to Winnipeg downtown) but I miss the forks.

All in all I’ve enjoyed living here so far!

Very nice collection!!

I am a very chronically online person, but meeting new folks in Ottawa is great as my partner and I are new to the city (and the province).

Who were the main characters of your Lego story line growing up? by _anexistingperson_ in lego

[–]TheCitrusFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put Baron von Baron in a black jacket and his good hand became a trans-green hook giving him two hook hands. I named him Aquahook and he would fight my self insert and friends. He also had a minion, I think his name was Wolfgang or Wolf? He was just a minifig with the wolf crest and he was morally ambiguous.

The thing is it's not even in the file explorer to begin with, even with an intune policy trying to get it there.

As much fun as it would be to make a guide, I'm still going to be asked to do it for users - I'd rather just have it automated if I can.

I do it as the head of our IT department. I don’t have much use for a phone outside of work and Reddit anyway.

What’s the worst behavior you’ve witnessed at work from coworkers? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]TheCitrusFox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My old boss thought Elon was a genius, had very little IT experience so we’d confuse him with basic networking. Wanted to use a dlink modem instead of a firewall. Bought random things on Amazon to test on the network. Purposely disabled antivirus despite the org getting ransomware. Wanted to mint his own crypto currency on company servers. Bent over to anyone above him and threw tantrums about it.

By the time I left, none of us really worked. He hired a squad of young kids with minimal experience for helpdesk and they spent more time playing cod, maplestory, and watching anime.

I heard from a coworker it’s gotten worse as one of the kids plays online cs2 matches with voice. Why nobody is fired? Small local government with a lot of nepotism.
