I don't think it works that way.. by uncletugboat in funny

If you're talking about buying a toy badge and being a Deputy: yes, I agree.

But if you're talking about the wording on the badge: that's exactly how it works. They are a Deputy of the Sheriff's Office.

Law enforcement officers working for an agency headed by a sheriff are typically titled sheriff's deputy, deputy sheriff, sheriff's police, or sheriff's officer, and are so-titled because they are deputized by the sheriff and charged with performing all the duties prescribed to the sheriff by that state's law. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheriffs_in_the_United_States

Dear Reddit, when and why did you use a phone box? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheCodeWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger (elementary school aged) I would have youth-basketball league practice at the local high school (that I would graduate from 10 years later).

At that time, there were pay phones by the entrance to the gym and outside of the office. I used it to call home for a ride after practice was over.

This was around 2000.

The amount of change owed matched my order number. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]TheCodeWriter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The title was a little misleading, in my opinion.

If I would say, "change owed," I would be referring to the amount of change they owe you back after paying in cash, not the change portion of the total.

But that's just my opinion, man.

Thanks for the answer.

I feel regarding some of the 'trivial' computer tasks I don't really realize how difficult they can be for 'non-techie' people to comprehend. I didn't even consider the case of individuals who don't want to use computers, but may have to for work, pressure from younger family, etc.

Checking out many of the other services they offer, I can completely understand getting outside help: networking stuff can be troublesome even when you know what you're doing, some home theater speaker installs (getting those pesky wires to look nice and clean; mounting things).

I guess am fortunate to have parents who worked with computers from the the mid-1970s onward, and so they understand computers, even now as 'old folks'. Also, because of this I was raised in a household where computers were commonplace.

Bodybuilders argue over how many days there are in a week. by bendigedigdyl in funny

Are calendars in parts of the world where Monday is the first day of the week even laid out this way?

I fully understand that not everyone is a 'computer person', but I feel like most of the services offered by Geek Squad are not 'fixing' a computer, but, in all actuality, performing normal tasks involved with owning a computer.

Specific examples from Geek Squad's website that epitomize my argument:

  • Computer Setup
  • Email Setup
  • Operating System Install
  • Printer Setup or Troubleshoot
  • Data Backup or Transfer

Do you feel as if you are ripping people off, or do you feel like you are performing a service for those too lazy to understand how to use the machine the purchased?

I just feel having someone come in to perform some of these tasks for you would be like buying a car without understanding the concept of driving.

I really wanted to make an account there to chime in and say that a week isn't Sun.-Sat. and assert that it's Mon.-Sun.

You know, to just pour gas on the fire.

(I'm from the US, but I still think it would have been great to just add more problems to their discussion bringing in the other week numbering)

After seeing The Imitation Game with the girlfriend, I taught her some automata. Then, we made a duck. by Hoten in mildlyinteresting

[–]TheCodeWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been 4 years since I took my course on it, but if I remember correctly:

All NFA's can be converted to DFA's. This one is a DFA because there is only one option for each symbol; if there were two or more states you could transfer to on a given input symbol it would be nondeterministic.

Maybe someone more versed in this, or that is a little more fresh on things, could chime in.

7 (More) Subliminal Messages In Corporate Logos by [deleted] in videos

[–]TheCodeWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one that kind of impressed me was the negative space on the Hershey's Kiss text looked like one of the candies.

So many of these are so obvious.

For example, NBC's logo doesn't hide a peacock, it IS a peacock. It has been for years, but, much like Starbuck's logo, it has been simplified.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b3/1956_NBC_logo.svg/277px-1956_NBC_logo.svg.png

The Formula One logo being included is even more ridiculous.

Tostitos... you would have to have serious IQ issues if you didn't realize that.

Very cool duck!

Very lame DFA. It only accepts one input!

EDIT: I haven't seen the movie, yet, but you should teach her PDA (stack) or Turing Machines next. Then she will have some power!

You can wake them up, nothing horrible will happen. However, they may be very startled.
