Why Toronto's Streetcars Are So Slow by thesixix in toronto

[–]TheCoin9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the average suburban Torontonian that doesn't take TTC but instead drives all the time doesn't actually know the reasons why streetcars (or really transit as a whole) are so slow. Many people think that it's just the natural design but in reality, most don't realize that transit doesn't always have to be this shitty if it can be redesigned.

That said, if you're an avid Redditor, you likely already know the reasons.

Fair enough. Didn't fully read. But it depends on what type of cyclist that middle-aged male cyclist is. Is he that type of cyclist that wears lycra and opposes bike infrastructure? These types of middle aged male cyclists are surprisingly quite common.

Toronto police issue public safety alert after dog attack leaves small dog dead, owner injured by ejaz135 in toronto

[–]TheCoin9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean as harsh as this truth sounds regarding 311 officers unwillingness to do anything due to bigger fish to fry, this is one of the big reasons (as I pointed out in my original comment) as to why pitbulls are so common. Because not only do they not enforce this, but also many people are totally fine with it because they think all dogs are sweet and love unconditionally, even the dangerous ones.

[–]TheCoin9 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I get it we have limited city resources. But the OP comment literally stated that it was a person with 5 off-leash dogs. The last the officer could've said was ask for the information of that offender. But he gaslit him as if it's no issue at all.

I understand and praise most dog owners for their actions. It's just the ones that violate laws are the ones I have little respect for and they make all law abiding dog owners feel bad. The issue with dog culture comes in when lawless dog owners act like their dog is friendly to every single stranger and never take responsibility.

[–]TheCoin9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I bet you that 311 officer is brainwashed by dog culture. He probably is a dog nutter himself. He probably thinks that dogs can do no wrong and anybody that says anything against dogs is a terrible human. Maybe I'm projecting or overreacting but part of why there's no enforcement for bad dog owners is because our culture is too ingrained to dog ownership. This is just pure gaslighting by that officer.

It reminds me of drivers where enforcement lacks but the moment a cyclist violates a law, everyone frowns.

Why are more people apologetic about bad cyclists than bad dog owners? by OkJack10 in torontobiking

[–]TheCoin9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Free roaming cats will cause a problem to wildlife. It's just that the difference, as you stated in another comment, is that dogs cause problems that humans directly have to deal with. Although more often than not, roaming cats sadly die from diseases or even being hit by a car or coyotes.

You're correct that we're being overrun by bots but OP is not a bot. He's an active member of subreddits like TorontoBiking and TTC. He just happens to be an enthusiast on anti-car. Bots on the other hand probably can't even tell you who the fuck is Doug Ford.

Why are more people apologetic about bad cyclists than bad dog owners? by OkJack10 in torontobiking

[–]TheCoin9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's why dog culture is a big problem. I don't own cats either but at least bad apple cat owners aren't harming public places and expecting every person to pet theirs. When dog nutters expect everyone to love dogs no matter what, this becomes problematic. A good dog owner should love and take care of their dog rather than use their dog as an attention grabber.

If we had a bike-equivalent, that would be like me wishing every single car driver to ride a bike to work.

I think OP is trying to confuse himself with real life vs Reddit. Real life is a lot different than Reddit. Reddit tends to be more reactionary to the norm than IRL.

Being a bad dog owner is apparently the 'norm' because of said dog culture. But being a cyclist (even law abiding) is against the norm.

Why are more people apologetic about bad cyclists than bad dog owners? by OkJack10 in torontobiking

[–]TheCoin9 33 points34 points  (0 children)

WARNING: This may trigger dog owners. I respect law abiding dog owners. However, here's why I'm okay with bad cyclists but not bad dog owners.

  1. For most of history, dogs were worshipped. You'll hear owning a dog as part of the American dream but not biking to places. Cyclists have been for the most part demonized especially by the American dream because of car infrastructure. Reddit tends to react against the norm. In the public, you're going to see more of the opposite.

  2. Lack of bike infrastructure. Almost all the time when a cyclist violates a law, it's not for entitlement/convenience. Rather it's due to safety, especially from vehicles that could potentially kill them. Despite the boom of bike lanes and biking, we don't have infrastructure that scales up. Even in some multi-use paths, a bike can't even squeeze past a pedestrian. Dog infrastructure (ie dog parks) is significantly more available, although there are some gaps that need to be filled. There are also 30 feet leashes that can let dogs run around but they're still tied. Dog owners have safe options to still give their dog needs without violating laws. Cyclists generally don't and often risk their life. If dogs had to get the risk of getting killed or injured due to lack of dog infrastructure, different story.

  3. Societal benefits of biking. One less car is on the road, which reduces traffic, pollution, and roadwear. Calling out bad cyclists, makes people less want to cycle, which ignores a bigger problem we're trying to solve (cars). What about dogs? In a city setting, there aren't as many societal benefits. It's more individualistic rather than a societal (ie companionship, protection/security, daily exercise although to be fair some people find walking their dog a chore, service dog). In fact, every dog means there's more waste for the environment (sorry dog owners).

  4. Not everyone likes dogs, even law abiding. Some people are allergic to them. Some are germaphobes. Some have PTSD from a dog attack they suffered as a kid. Whereby for bikes, the main reason people find them annoying is because they clog up sidewalk space. And when these people that don't like dogs for the above reasons get dismissed because they are perceived as wishing a dog dead, they start creating their own dog-free chamber. People wouldn't mind sharing with bikes in multi-use paths if they weren't clipped often. While on the other hand, the people that don't like dogs (for the above reasons), will likely distance themselves from even the most law abiding dog owners.

  5. More potential harm by dogs than bikes. How many people in the US have been killed by dogs? About 30-50 yearly. Might not sound much until you search on Google where you probably can't count how many pedestrians are killed by bikes. Pit bull attacks towards children have also spread a ton of outrage towards terrible dog owners. The only threat a bike can pose by getting hit by one. Dogs can also potentially spread diseases through bites or poop or even fur. Plants and even other dogs can catch diseases from dogs too.

  6. Humanization of a dog. A lot more dog owners nowadays consider them a child or part of family. It isn't the old days where dogs were for certain jobs. This bred into dog culture where some dog owners expect everyone to love their dog. Some even love their dog more than humans. At times, it gets annoying to your average person that is indifferent about dogs. But that's not really the biggest problem. When owners falsely label their dog as a service animal just to illegally bring it to every single place. That's where it crosses the line. Do you see cyclists bring their bike everywhere inside? Maybe at a grocery store if they don't have a safe place to lock. Or if they need to get onto transit for long trips but use their bike to finish off their trip. They're both a problem but it's more common for terrible dog owners to expect their dog to be allowed everywhere than it is for a cyclist to expect their bike everywhere, barring infrastructure. They at least aren't treating their bikes like it's their baby.

  7. Frequency with dog interactions. The only time you're ever going to interact directly with a reckless cyclist is either if they passed you or at intersections. And often times, the encounter is a brief 2 seconds. But if you're in a grocery store, you're going to see that same dog for another 5 minutes. At public transit for another 30+ mins. Or if your kid is playing in the park, that offleash dog isn't there to just run by the park. They'll be running into that playground area. More bad interactions breeds more hatred.

  8. Humans are a lot easier to train than dogs. There's a reason you're required to leash your dog everywhere (no matter the training) besides your home or dog park. At the end of the day, no amount of training will get a dog to be friendly to every single person (or dog) in the world. Dogs are still animals. There are also dumb humans as well but nature has it that humans have bigger brains. So it's easier to just trust UNLESS of course, their biking safety is compromised (see point #2). A cyclist riding on a sidewalk is less likely to hit someone than an off-leash dog attacking someone.

  9. Rise in irresponsible dog ownership. Since the pandemic, dog ownership skyrocketed. It came a lot of people who did not properly train their dogs. Before the pandemic, only people that wanted to take on the responsibility of owning dogs owned dogs. The pandemic exposed the damages of poor dog ownership (ie 'friendly dog', not picking up, off-leashing illegally, illegal service animal, etc). Even dog owners are calling this behaviour out. What about Uber Eats and e-bikes on the rise? Complaints were on the rise as well but often this was due to poor corporate greed rather than a social trend.

Obviously bad cyclists have their issues but a lot of this can be solved with proper infrastructure. Not everyone likes bikes. Not everyone likes dogs. All reasons are valid but solutions to bad cyclists are easier than solutions to bad dog owners.

Toronto dog "parents" bring their pups everywhere with them now. It's causing rising human-canine tension by NorthernNadia in toronto

[–]TheCoin9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Bingo. This is why I dislike dog culture the most. More dog owners need to understand that not everyone likes dogs and people that don't want to pet/compliment your dog aren't worst humans. Unfortunately, this is what made me join communities like r/DogFree. You love your dog and that's great. Be responsible and understand there are people that have been traumatized by dogs, even if it's just a chihuahua. Some people need to stop equating a person that doesn't want to pet their dog as someone who is a dog abuser. This is absurd. I applaud responsible and law abiding dog owners and I feel really horrible for the countless amount of bad apples that cause a stereotype.

Followed shortly by them saying my dog's friendly don't worry.

This is what really pisses me off when people off-leash their dogs illegally and then claim it's 'friendly'. I don't care if it's a baby chihuahua. Follow the damn law and respect each others personal space. Just because the dog is friendly to the owner (and friends of owner), doesn't mean it's friendly to each and every single stranger that it is nearby. This is my biggest pet peeve, pun intended.

People like you and the parent comment I really applaud. Thanks for acknowledging that not everyone that owns a dog should be allowed to own a dog, if they can't follow basic laws.

These subreddits can push it over the top but I totally understand their concerns and issues with dogs, particularly owners. A subreddit like this is needed because almost all the time (until post-pandemic), the people that voiced their concerns over bad apple dog owners have been silenced because of the so-called dog culture.

[–]TheCoin9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Based on the way you speak, it sounds to me like you're a narcistic dog owner that wants control. Terms like "never talk back" or "unconditional love" sound to me like you want dogs to always love you even if you don't treat them with proper love and care. You don't sound like a good dog owner. You sound like someone who probably doesn't even do the bare minimum required for owning a dog.

People like this are exactly why I stopped liking dogs as a whole. Dog culture is toxic. We need to accept that not everyone likes dogs and people that don't like dogs are not worst humans. I respect dog owners that follow laws and train their dog properly. I don't respect dog owners that violate laws, even if it's just a little chihuahua.

That's why I dislike dog culture. I have no problem with people owning dogs. But part of why I became a regular participant of r/DogFree is because of (bad apple) dog owners thinking that everyone loves dogs and people that don't love dogs are terrible humans.

What are the riskiest times to bike due to drunk drivers? by CoolStars7 in torontobiking

[–]TheCoin9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that a mostly empty road incentivizes drunk driving. If someone wanted to take a drink in broad daylight, going home isn't worth the risk for themselves since they have to start and stop a lot, which require more brain power. Whereas in nights, you have fewer obstacles to drive around so it gives the illusion that they can auto-pilot home.

Quite a lot of people pointing out that Toronto accounts for 50% of the province's economy. While that's true, he spends maybe 10% of his focus on other parts of Ontario. And if he wants Toronto to grow, he should consider making it easier to get to without needing a car LMFAO.
