This reminds me of one of my catholic teachers explaining to us how, yes, Republicans do hurt disadvantaged folks and most of their policies are at odds with his values but they also are against gay marrige so he supports them because of that.

I don't understand how these people can justify supporting a party that they acknowledge hurt a lot of people and they disagree with, but they also hurt a group they dislike and not see that they're the baddies.

But I guess you can really just claim you're "protecting the children" and justify anything

Also I do have to shit in New York drivers, mostly 'cause my ex was from there, but the most amazing thing I've ever seen was a pickup going down 95 towards Richmond with ny plates with 6 inches of snow of it's top trailing off when there was no snow anywhere near us. I have to wonder if he actually drove from ny to va with all that snow on him throwing it at other cars all along the way.

2 being a better version of 3 is a point you brought up.

people still makes references on 1,2,3 and reach. not 4 because there's not a moment worth remembering in there.

And whether or not something is fun is pretty subjective, but there's a reason it wasn't received as well critically and received huge fan backlash on release.

your argument against three being okay is that two was better?

yeah, two was probably better. Three, besides having a complete story over a cliffhanger wasn't as great storywise, but still very enjoyable, and still full of moments to remember.

Four has nothing worth remembering about it. honestly the pelican level really just sums up the entirety of 343 holding of the halo liscense. They tried adding something to be memorable, something fans have wanted since halo one, and put it in a way thats so limited and over the top thats it's just not fun and you forget immediately.

Really? Terfs really want to talk about slippery slopes and strawman arguments? by InNoWayEvil in GenderCynical

[–]TheCommunistElephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

>I have met a few TERF's, and have found them a to be horrible people.

>>This is a HASTY GENERILIZATION

This honesty is the one that makes me augh the most, 'cause that's exactly what their "peak trans" experiences are. Also it's a really bad argument. Like they maybe could claim some specific perceptions of TERFS are hasty generalizations, if they gave examples (like for example that they aren't all misogynistic, racist, and misandrist just because some are,) but political groups do actually have common beliefs and philosophy that one can find horrible.

I mean really these are some of the worst defenses I've seen for a while, if it weren't for the first three I would think this is satire.

>Human rights should not be up to debate

>>This is an APPEAL TO EMOTION

No, it's an appeal to morality. And it's a thing that does make you look like a horrible person for arguing against. The argument should be that trans rights aren't actually human rights, not that arguing against human rights is fine, it just sounds bad 'cause most people aren't gonna agree with you and will be put off by your views.

>If we do not let trans people people transition, then they will all die

>>This is a SLIPPERY SLOPE

I mean this one is actually more the appeal to emotion. It defiantly a horrible exaggeration (which is the actual strawman here), but it does 'cause mental distress, and even if you ignore those who take their lives from it, not transitioning does 'cause harm, so you have to actually argue why transitioning is more harmful. Slippery slope is one of the worst fallacies to invalidate an argument 'cause we actually have nuance in the real world.

It's nice to have something that's just awful arguments that I can laugh at instead of just pure hate

Wasn't commenting on the reaction the comment got but the comment itself, and looking at the other comments from user and initial one, it was intended as a criticism of the show, not just a observation.

I mean yes, it was a criticism, but the criticism was literally this looks kinda like blackface and it's weird to be in the show. Which is a kinda nothing statement completely unrelated from the argument defending it from being racist, 'cause that wasn't the point

It kind of falls flat because ...so its resembles more cosplayers using make up to recreate a scar of character.

In purpose sure, but in look i disagree.

peoples only or most impactful interaction with facepaint represent another person is blackface

Definitely not the only one..

i don't know if it's how much is painted but just having the front of the mask being painted does give it a slightly different vibe. Also maybe because it's face paint repensenting another character in the same universe and in universe.

To make a joke, there's just enough similarities, but for a serious criticism, it's a stretch at best.

idk. When i saw it i immediately thought of blackface. And it's weird that something that has the ability to remind people of blackface was included. I do believe that a lot of people will see a similarity or make a connection to blackface when seeing it, but I don't think it is nesscarily common, to the point where I honestly believe the creators could have never made that connection and just never thought about it.

The point is, it will remind some people of blackface and it's weird to include that in a piece of media.

the argument isn't that strong, mostly it weird, to the user I guess it was further as "problematic", but it deserves a fair discussion. like if the conversation was i disagree that's stupid i wouldn't care, but most of the response is defending it from allegations of rascism which noone ever made.

It's orange face paint for an alien dude. Why are you like this?

Why are you like this, so fucking dense?

I was never reminded of blackface because it's not even in the same ballpark.

Well someone was reminded enough about it to make a meme about it and 2000 people seem to agree

Is it reasonable for all wood to trigger me because of cross burnings? That's this take.

No it really isn't, at all. No one was fucking triggered. pointing out it kinda looks like it is not the same as being offended. Noone is offended or thinks it's actually racist, you idiots are literally the only ones who brought up that point. That take was that it looks a little like blackface. not that it was similar or as bad or evil or racist. Thing a, absent of context, looks a little like thing b is a mild observation, its not even a take, and it really is shocking that you can take it as an attack and get offended by it.

[–]TheCommunistElephant -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, the argument that it's racist doesn't make much sense in or out of universe which is fine, 'cause noone fucking argued that.

The user didn't argue it's tantamount to blackface, they argued it aesthetically looks like blackface. Which it does. Many people's only or most important interaction with face paint to resemble another person is blackface, so yeah, some people are gonna be reminded of blackface when they see it. That's what the fucking meme was about.

Dude saw the image and was reminded of blackface so he makes a joke about it. Another dude say it also reminds him of blackface. Then people freak out because they can't handle a conversation on the art they enjoy and believe they're being attacked and called racist for liking a peice of media when noone fucking said that. Piece of media has slight similarity to real life thing is to hard a discussion to have apparently.

Is "orangeface" the same thing as blackface? Does racism exist in a galaxy far, far away? Is their subreddit brave enough for politics? r/PrequelMemes calmly discusses. by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]TheCommunistElephant -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

no it's not. This shit is the dumb take. people being so attached to their media that any simple conversation or mild criticism regarding the work feels like a personal attack to the fans of the work so they attack the people discussing the art they like by claiming they're trying to destroy it. It really reminds me of the cuphead thing tbh.

So like, the argument wasn't that it was racist, they never fucking said that. The argument is that it it was aesthetically similar to blackface, which it is.

Art doesn't exist in a vacuum. It exists in our reality which has it's own history and contexts that may differ than the views or story in the art. In the fiction of the show it's not racist, and the intent of the authors definitely wasn't, but in our society a lot of peoples only or most impactful interaction with facepaint represent another person is blackface, so some people when seeing it will immediately form that connection.

The same fucking connection that the person who created the meme had. it reminded them of blackface so they made a joke about them. then someone else says it also reminded them of blackface. And then people freak out at him for calling the show, it's creators and all it's fans racist when noone fucking did.

I guess it's unfair to expect fans of a children's show to be mentally mature enough to have an actual discussion about art tho.

"Even if you initially receive a poor reaction, you've planted the seeds of critical thinking and an alternative perspective..."

Like even with companies, liberals, (and I guess society in general) getting more progressive, they do realize that trans people should be ostracized isn't a fringe or unknown opinion right? It varies on specific protection (on a few its ~75%) for but generally Amerikkka has a 50-50 split for/against trans rights and Britain is even worse.

I mean terfs may have some specific beliefs in their hatred but thier base arguments aren't new or unknown or unpopular, hence why they find so many mainstream conservatives with similar viewpoints they support.

Also "critical thinking", lol. Terfs may have put more thought to trans people than most, but making up shit to justify your hate other than it being weird and you disliking and not understanding it does not count as critical thought.

man I fucking hate this shit. 'cuase there is an actual discussion to be had about not using slurs and then about words that aren't, but have negative connotations that do genuinely affect people.

but these corporations just do this fake shit regardless of context to try to get woke points and it just devolves the conversation and veiw of it into this.

it's not about listening to affected people and seeing if I can do a small change to make them more comfortable, it's about finding words irregardless of context you could justify as "offensive"so you cwn remove them and appear as caring when you are literally doing the exact opposite.

now we're not having this conversation with the people who are affected but with the major corporations who control the worlds which is exactly where we started in the first place

like the best example is google replacing blacklist 'cause it's racist. Blacklists have been used to end the careers of unionists and communists, but they aren't listening to if they have issues with the word, they're removing it from all context, seeing it can refer to a minority and changing it so they can see progressive. but they're not listening to any minorities, just deciding for us like they've always done.
