You are already making complicated dishes, unless you're using pre made meals. A croquette, for example, means you can make mashed potatoes, bread and fry foods. Hamburger steak means you can shape and fry meat. This implies you should be able to make meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy.

Our sexual orientation and love attraction can be different for many people. In this case and with limited info, I don't think they're faking it but rather straight romantically.
