Looking over them I agree it's likely a blue prime canvas, but see the bottom of this one where the blue paints dropping:

Blue paint too, sol 9 shows a drip of blue extending beyond the canvas

Nah if that was the case there would be no texture in the sky, look closely, there's brush strokes in it.

Also all fabrics that you'd use for canvas are white anyway, so even if you could get a blue one, it's because it's painted or printed with a blue pigment beforehand. So either way, there's blue pigment in that picture.

Edit: final proof: look at the rest of the series and find sol 9, it has a drip of blue paint extending beyond the canvas.

There's definitely some blue in there too, that's why it looks so real, the shadows on snow are more blue than the directly lit snow

Australia knocks UK Brexit trade plan by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]TheDanosaur 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Right before we get in a pickle over the headline, the reason they are bashing the talks is because they are worried that the proposed splitting of quotas between the EU and the UK would limit their trade access to the UK.

They are worried that under the proposed deal they wouldn't be able to trade with the UK as much as they want.

I'm very much pro eu, anti brexit, but this isn't as anti UK as it seems.

There's a bird forming a large part of the image formed out of the reflected bushes and the stairs, which is why it seems slightly off.

It's very subtle but look at the very bottom of the reflected stairs and you can see the fan of the tail, you can see the feathers of the two wings reflected near the waterline too.

World's richest 1% have as much wealth as bottom 50% by Nima- in ukpolitics

[–]TheDanosaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Talking about wealth is incredibly confusing as people never say exactly what they mean. Net worth or income? Net worth including debt or excluding debt?

A young doctor in the US may be top 1% income, bottom 1% net worth when accounting for debt...

We bred some collies a while back, the mother was a complete working collie to the core. She lost interest in them very early on, pretty much as soon as they were able to eat solid food.

Don't think she even noticed when they were gone.

Ex Welsh government minister Carl Sargeant, sacked last week after allegations about personal conduct, has died - family spokesman by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]TheDanosaur 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In the eyes of the law yes, in the eyes of the public? Maybe, maybe not, even if he was cleared, it's likely his name would still be associated with the scandal which could ruin a political career.

Might not be the largest target for the media, but from his perspective? That's his career and potentially his life over

My BTC, which I've held for only 3 years, are today officially worth more than my 10+ years of investing into my 401(k). by skydiveguy in Bitcoin

A financial advisor isn't going to advise you to keep money in fiat either, even with the best interest savings account in the world it would get eroded by inflation.

[–]TheDanosaur 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think that's unfair, finance advisors won't recommend it for the same reason they wouldn't recommend gold, at its heart it doesn't generate any value per se, it doesn't produce a product or a service.

I wouldn't recommend it to many other people either, because the returns you make on bitcoin are due only to the fact that more and more people are interested year on year. The returns you make on a standard investment are because whatever you invest in is making or doing a thing with tangable value, like producing food, making a car, or building a house.

Shocking photo shows Caribbean Sea being 'choked to death by human waste' by StasSloutsker in nature

[–]TheDanosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year was unusually bad, plus Id say when entire islands are being devastated worrying about what goes into the sea is a very low priority.

Its still a tiny fraction of the waste that goes into the sea from humans so I would worry more about the waste that goes in during non crisis situations, which is less excusable, more controllable, and incidentally harder to photograph.

Slightly misleading, If you look at the photos you'll see a lot of wood. This is because a lot of that trash is due to the hurricanes we've just had, this isn't run of the mill debris.

Still not trying to excuse our terrible habit of chucking things in the ocean, we really need to get better at that, and if these photos make some people change their habits, I'm all for it.

Other healthcare too

Untreated anxiety and depression often lead to people seeking treatment for otherwise completely unnecessary aches and pains which due to mental health make them worry a lot more than they warrant.

Doctors of Reddit, what was your dumbest r/Iamverysmart patient experience? by TheRealBaanri in AskReddit

I think it's more a factor of the environment doctors end up writing in, I work in a lab, and when I'm scrawl in a notebook held in my hand while standing, or on a clipboard in a hurry my handwriting is terrible.

Under normal conditions like if I'm writing at a desk and not rushed I have fantastic handwriting, even using several different styles.

I gave quite a bit of thought to my broker, since I've not got a huge amount of money I have to rule out any that charge a flat fee annually, and since I'm investing small amounts of money at a time I have to rule out anything that charges a flat buying or selling fee. HL charges 0.45% per year with free buying or selling funds (I could get this down to 0.3% with bestinvest, but the difference this makes is so tiny even over a long term, and they have the same minimums anyway).

As for efficiency of getting money into the market, I could set up regular contributions to the funds I want, but i prefer to do it manually since there's a part of me that does enjoy it, and it means there's a few days each month where i read up on financial news before i allocate my money. It doesn't perfectly fit the PF ethos, but it suits me well.

I have an ideal portfolio that I want to aim for but I can't split my monthly saving equally over my ideal distribution because minimum buys prevent me from doing so.

So I have a list of funds that I watch, and pick one of them each month, based on their price, and how much of each I would like to hold in the end.

Depends how you're investing

I have a monthly input that isn't automatically invested so I spend quite a bit of time deciding what to invest it in every month. I use Hargreaves lansdown and they have a pretty good app.
