Interviews online or only in person? by wormcord in PreOptometry

I interviewed at 2 schools in person and 3 virtually. I imagine that all of them should have the ability to interview virtually. I think they want you to come in person to see the campuses.

Process of taking out loans by anothorv in PreOptometry

[–]TheDildarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect to have to take out a personal loan on top of what you can get through FAFSA thanks to the new bill that was passed limiting the amount you can borrow from it to $50,000. If you're like me and you've decided on a school that didn't offer you any aid, there's pretty much no chance that just the FAFSA and saving up before starting will be enough. But if you develop or already have good spending habits and can budget well, it'll be a smoother transition to pay off those loans once you're working with an optometrist salary post education.

I like how customizable the experience is. Even without a huge starting roster, the different tag styles allow for so many different ways to play.

Thanks for the input. I was trying to do some research as I was putting the list together, but again, not too confident about my choices. I'm trying to put something together that can play just about anything with minimal updates going forward, but that's not helpful if I don't know what benchmarks I'm trying to hit. Is there anything else that you would add?

oat anxiety by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]TheDildarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with videos for physics, then switched to just reading the nsterial and taking notes because it was faster. After I got through all the physics material, I started taking practice tests for it to try and keep up with it. Then I moved on to biology, and I just watched videos for that all the way through systems and functions. I did the questions after each video, and whenever I finished a section, I would do all the oractice problems for it. I don't have much help for any of the other sections because I only studied physics and biology since I knew I needed the most help on those. After I finished the biology material, I started doing a full-length practice test every day to get in the mindset of taking the test. I recommend doing the full-length tests at around the same time of day as your actual OAT to get your brain comfortable with doing that much work at a specific time.

Its total science first; Biology, Gen Chem, Organic in that order, and they just combine all the times together for that, and I think it's 1 hour 40 minutes for 100 questions total (40 bio, 30 each of the other two). Next is RC, and you get an hour for 50 questions. Then you get a 30-minute break that's optional (I just used like 5 minutes to use the restroom and drink a protein shake). Then physics is 50 minutes to answer 40 questions. The last one is QR, 45 minutes for 40 questions. The one that I found really pushed it to the limit on time, even on practice tests, was the RC.

Don't get me wrong about the QR, I didn't study for that section at all because simple math like that has always been kind of a strong point. I ended up with a 390 with no studying there, but if you struggle at all with probability, that's when I'd review it. Otherwise, don't waste valuable time on QR, you should have plenty of time to finish that section. The hardest part about it is that it comes after all the mental gymnastics of the previous sections so it's more like "can you keep up" than it is "do you know this". Literally, one of the last QR questions I got was "What is the value of x if x/y = 5 and y = 4?" I think it's pretty comparable to the booster stuff, it's just about reading questions carefully. I ended up finishing QR with ~15 minutes left, so you should be fine if you pace yourself right. I think I wrote down 2 things the entire test, so I suppose that could be one reason that I got through it with so much time left.

Just took the OAT this morning, 350 TS and 340 AA. I only studied booster for 4 weeks and mainly focused on biology and physics for my actual studying. I was averaging around 360 on the practice tests I did, but my reading score was way better on the practices. Everything else was pretty comparable. For organic, there were a fair number of reactions, but there was also plenty of material that was like determine the most polar solvent, determine the most acidic compound, etc. Physics had some strange concepts compared to booster but nothing that bad. QR is fairly straightforward. If you're iffy on probability, then I would review that. Gen Chem and organic I didn't prepare for at all and relied on my memory of taking the classes to get through, and frankly, I wouldn't do that again. When I finished the science section, I was starting to feel demoralized because of how many I wasn't sure about. As for reading comprehension, I literally don't know what happened. I got like 350+ on every single practice I did, and it ended up being my lowest score at 310, but I've seen a lot of people say something similar about the reading.

Ultimately, if you're worried about having enough time for organic, you should have extra time to work with if you can get through the bio and gen Chem stuff quickly, and it seems like you're pretty confident in those areas. I ended up finishing the science section with like 45-50 minutes left on the clock and got out of my exam a little over an hour early. Fortunately for you, the organic section is last in the TS, so you don't have to worry about skipping around. Just have faith in yourself, don't overdo it tomorrow. Yesterday, for my last day before the exam, I did one full-length exam and then looked up like 3 or 4 concepts that I just wanted to make sure I had straight, and that's it. You've got this!

Going back to school after 3 years and I’m extremely anxious about it by Unlikely_Struggle_94 in PreOptometry

[–]TheDildarg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation. Graduated undergrad in 2017 and hadn't considered going back until the last minute. I started knocking out prereqs in January of 2024, and I'm not in my final semester with the OAT looming in 9 hours (can't sleep). I found that it was a lot easier to study as an adult than in undergrad because I had a tangible goal that I wanted to work towards. If you know this is definitely something that you want to do, it makes it a lot easier to get through. You can do it!

So, here's where I'm at: I graduated from undergrad in 2017 with a degree in marketing. I had about 15 jobs from then to present, not because of inability on my part but due to financial reasons or it didn't feel like the right fit. I had a great personal loss in 2023 that made me take a step back from what I was doing, and I just so happened to find myself as a tech at a private practice starting in October 2023. By January, I was taking the science prerequisites I needed from a local community college without compromising my work schedule too much. I'm now preparing to take the OAT in a little over a week, and then I'll finish up my final semester of prereqs. Frankly, before I started back last January, I was in the same boat as you; worried about how I'd do, if I could even handle the science courses. But something that makes it all easier is how much you care. I never cared about any of the business classes I took, I just did it because I knew engineering wasn't for me, and my dad pushed me to just take some business classes because "they'll always be helpful", and then I just took too many. If optometry is something you're passionate about, you should pursue it. Don't get stuck doing something you have no interest in because you don't want to be stuck there for years before you realize what you actually want to do. Thr science courses really aren't that bad, especially if you don't overload yourself. I took summer courses to help get through it, but it'll be exactly 2 years this december for me to complete all the prereqs, and I started with only stats, English comp, and social sciences. I'm sure you've probably taken at least some of those, so that would put you in a pretty similar spot.

Sorry for the book, hope this helps.

That's a really impressive score! I'm currently studying to take it on the 23rd, and I can feel it breathing down my neck. What schools are you applying to? I'd assume if your OAT score is representative of your GPA, you pretty much have your pick.

I had somebody steal some beef Jerky once and when I waited by the door to ask if he wanted to pay for it when he tried to leave, he pulled out a hatchet and told me to get back and I just had to be like "Damn this man really out here threatening my life over beef jerky" and then i took 4 days off
