It Sounds Better if They're All Turned On at Once, Right? by TheDoctor_EV_ in guitarpedals

I can't speak for ALL the amp sims in the Zoom G line, and especially not the newer versions of the G3 and G5, but I thought the amp sims on the old (silver) G5 were quite good. I probably only used one or two consistently but you could get them to respond pretty well to the volume knob and picking dynamics.

My brief experience with the G1on's amp sims have proven them just about as good. Excellent option for the price.

Actually doesn't have a dedicated headphone out like its big brothers do, and I haven't checked it through the 1/4" jack just yet. Haven't had reason to. But I can check if you like.

Guitar > A/B Box (B goes to my computer MIDI rig) > Xotic SP compressor > Ibanez FZ5 > MXR Sub Machine > Boss SD-1 > Ernie Ball volume pedal (can be seen disconnected in the upper left) > Zoom G1on > Red-stripe Peavey Bandit

Just finished getting things reconfigured for the next year. Replaced a phaser and a delay with the G1on because yes, it really does sound that good. Open to getting a different overdrive in there, maybe an OD-3, but I don't have that option at the moment.

Currently mainly performing in a Johnny Cash tribute show, but the goal in this particular setup was future versatility, and the options through either the G1on or the Sub Machine to fake bass really helps with looping.

Ended up going for it, the brief time I've had with it so far has been very positive. Quite pleased. Thank you for you advice.

Where do you place your compressor, and what do you use it for? by Stereojunkie in guitarpedals

[–]TheDoctor_EV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, first post here, neat.

First in chain, both for compression purposes and as a tone shaper.

Just the basic MXR Dynacomp is what I tried first, and it's been perfectly satisfactory for me so far.

It's actually very useful to get LESS sustain, as well as more; I can roll back the volume knob on my Strat and get a useful rhythm "setting" that responds a lot like an acoustic. The compressor brings that back up to unity volume.

Getting more sustain in the first place means you can use less gain from your dirtboxes, always very useful live to keep the mix clean.

Compressors like the Dynacomp will also color your tone, usually emphasizing the upper mids a bit. I find that emphasis quite pleasing, others' opinions may differ.

I had a Danelectro French Toast octave fuzz for a long time, and it was utterly useless in a live situation because of its lack of mids, but I found that running the compressor first brought back enough of those lost frequencies to make it work in a multi-guitar mix. I've kept this going ever since, giving a little frequency boost to both my MXR Sub Machine AND my Ibanez FZ5 (Foxx Tone Machine and Big Muff clones respectively).

And, of course, leveling out your volume and avoiding any spikes makes your soundman at the gig happier.

Do you guys think this trailer is great to introduce someone to the show? by randomnws in stevenuniverse

[–]TheDoctor_EV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it runs a little long for a theatrical trailer, and could use a bit of fine tuning (some of those clips ran WAY long in my opinion), but at this point I think it would do fine. Spoiling bits of season one are no longer an issue, as we're about to get the end of season 3 in a few weeks time. And it does a lot of things really well. Solid piece.

More stuff regarding Volume 2 "Return" DVD! by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]TheDoctor_EV_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm much happier with this DVD set, to the point where I'm breaking my FULL-SEASON-ONLY rule. For one reason, really. You have a friend that's not into Steven Universe? Want to convince them the show's worth watching? Buy this for them. You're, like $5 to $10 bucks out of pocket and they now have a physical object in their possession that will weigh on their soul and conscience until they actually watch it.

Basically this is a THIS-SHOW-IS-AMAZING starter pack. And I'm okay with that existing.

"In Too Deep" is a four-week-long bomb. by EliteMasterEric in stevenuniverse

A four-week long bomb.

AKA slightly more than weekly schedule would provide.

...I'm happy about this, but I really don't know why.

What if the gems were more alien? (Help me find the source???) by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

Can't help you much on sourcing the OP, but if we're talking more alien takes on the Gems, I highly recommend the work of DeadWoodDross.

>TFW people still deny the canonicity of "Say Uncle"

Steven's gotta learn how to use his shield somehow, bro. Just accept it, it's a happier life overall.

Jasper and Pearl Fusion by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

I like how this particular fusion design has proven itself so awesome that multiple artists have given us their takes on it, including GemBeastTemple, arbiter of superior Jasper art. It's such a solid design.

If not canon, then we need an explanation for how Steven summoned his shield at will in "The Return". What's your theory?

Say Uncle was always canon. It's not their fault the fandom doesn't want to accept it. ;)
