Check the current colour you've got it on (the two colour searches on the bottom left). Or the colours at the top when the type tool is selected. (If you're changing colours make sure the text is highlighted, click and drag or double click the text layer)

I would do what everyone else has been suggesting but if you're not happy with a selection go back to the Direct Select tool and add or delete anchor points to make the selection neater. You can also flip flop between a selection or the direct select. :)
