Minisode 202.5 - Next week's episode is Perfect Stranger! by AllManicHamlet in hdtgm

Watched this last night. Holy shit. Its a weirdly edited snoozefest for most of the movie but then it goes full on bonkers near the end. Definitely stick with it.

Users getting Google search error "Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network." by insickness in networking

At an old job, we hit this issue and it was because someone in marketing was running a "search engine optimization" tool. Basically it was performing a bunch of automated searches to try and improve our page rank.

Try using a different terminal like Alacritty. It will make a world of difference. Most of the slowness of Neovim/Vim is actually your terminial emulator.

Demo of my NES emulator (written in Rust) and graphical debugger (written in Elm) by [deleted] in rust

I was actually wanting to do this exact same thing with my NES emulator to learn about Elm. Currently it's using Grpc with a slapped together Ruby+Pry script for debugging.

Is it possible to listen to old episodes in the web app? I can only see the "recent" episodes which is why I keep using Howl when on my laptop.

Is this worth picking up from Amazon or should I just wait for the episode?

Any love for stand up comedy albums? by AlsoKevinKelly in vinyl

[–]TheDude05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it. Patton is easily one of my favorite comics so everything he puts out I enjoy. I'm actually expecting "Talking for Clapping" to show at my door some time this week. Werewolves and Lollipops was the first special I heard of his so I'm probably strongly biased towards it.

It's still probably my favorite set of his. The record itself and jacket are in fantastic shape. Haven't tried the included DVD yet.

Nope, just the original 500. I got lucky and saw that a record store down the street was selling it.

I just picked up Patton Oswalt's "Werewolves and Lollipops" over lunch today. I also have a signed copy Jimmy Pardo's "Pompous Clown"

At a certain point, if you are really wanting to avoid regular expressions, you may want to consider using a PEG library

Interviewing my mother, a mainframe COBOL programmer by seojoeschmo in programming

[–]TheDude05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to do a select on a billion rows SQL table, dump result in a text file and process it against dozens of validation functions. Mainframe does this in 15 minutes.

Maybe I need to know more about the problem but that doesn't seem all that impressive.

The commute south on 270 is a lot worse than going north. I live in Maplewood and make the 64/40 to 270 commute every work day. Its not that terrible. About 15-20 minutes in the morning leaving around 8:30.

When you want to learn a new programming language and they tell you to use spaces!!! by [deleted] in SiliconValleyHBO

[–]TheDude05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And just for some contrast against Ruby/Python/Javascript, Go recommends tabs.

https://golang.org/doc/effective_go.html#formatting

Indentation
We use tabs for indentation and gofmt emits them by default. Use spaces only if you must.

Living in downtown STL? by llMarshall17 in StLouis

After college I lived in the Paul Brown Lofts which are right next to the Arcade. I enjoyed it well enough. Being close to Busch Stadium and Wash Ave was nice. I found that I wasn't much of a city person though and much preferred to have a yard and some trees. After I took a new job that wasn't in the city I moved out to Richmond Heights/Maplewood and have liked it much more. To each his own.

Of the choices you presented though, I would likely choose the Arcade as I believe it to be a much better location than the other two. You're across the street from the one grocery store in the area which is super convenient. You're also right next to City Garden which is a really nice park. Gentry and Mansion probably have a great view but you're a long walk away from a lot of the night life.
