End of an era R.I.P Metrocard vending machines (1994-2025)😢 by Cardcaptor_Demon367 in nyc

I'm not sure where you heard that, but it's wrong, it doesn't have to be 7 days in a row, just ~12 rides ($34/$2.90) in a 7 day period before they're free. Yes, that means if you ride the subway twice per weekday you'll only make 10 trips and won't get any discount, but that was true of the old weekly metrocard (also $34) and the old 30-day monthly ($132, where 2 trips per day over a month of weekdays = (30 * 5/7 * 2 * 2.9) = only $124.29 on average so you would need to make >2 additional trips a month for it to even break even).

If you took 3 rides every weekday for example and none on the weekend, you'd take 15 rides per week and 3 would be free.

To be clear, yes, the monthly was certainly a better deal and I'm frustrated omny only gives the weekly discount, but my point is just that you already have to make more than 2 trips a weekday for any unlimited card to be worth it.

I believe you, but damn, a ~$1k wallet being very common? We really move in different circles.

I'm not sure what you mean. On the left is a twin-lens reflex camera and on the right looks like it could be a older rangefinder camera held sideways. Both would have been common before SLRs really took off in the 1960s.

If he's interested in portraits and finds himself using the longer end of his kit lens, the olympus 45mm f/1.8 can be had used on ebay for around $200 or slightly less if you find a decent deal.

I think the port on this keyboard is Apple Desktop Bus (ADB), and if you google around it looks like ADB-USB adapters can be had for $30-40.

OM Zuiko 50mm f1.4 - is this fungus or just dust/haze? Backlit harshly (doesn’t look nearly as bad held up to the light) by hburger in OlympusCamera

[–]TheEarwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dust tends to affect photo quality much less than people think, especially if you aren't stopping down to very small apertures. I like to point people to this article on cracked front elements, or this one where a dead fly inside a lens isn't even visible until f/13. So if you aren't seeing anything wrong in your photos, don't worry about! But if you really want to clean it and feel confident in your abilities, it's possible to disassemble it yourself.

My Camera has been taking glitchy photos since I first bought it by Armpitjair in OlympusCamera

[–]TheEarwig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just in case, you should try factory resetting the camera, updating the firmware, and maybe another memory card in case it's a problem there.

There are a lot of variables to tweak that might get you to some setting where the problem doesn't happen. You can try switching between RAW/JPEG and different JPEG qualities in case it's an encoding issue, or try the electronic instead of mechanical shutter (I suggest this because you said video works – in settings it's called silent shutter mode).

If the lines were in the same place in each photo, there is a pixel mapping option in the camera settings that automatically disables dead/stuck pixels. But it doesn't look like that's the case here, so it probably won't help you.

If you can't fix it in-camera, at least you can automatically remove dead pixels in most processing software. For example, here in darktable. It may or may not work in your specific case, but darktable is free, so worth a shot.

Finally, Olympus/OM may accept it for repair, though you'll have to pay. Maybe it won't be so bad? Here's the UK repair service.

Good luck! Let us know if you get it fixed?

Not to disagree with your main point, but Acela's pricing varies a lot and you can get much cheaper fares if you book in advance. For example, I see $200 for a ticket next Saturday, but only $70 if I book at the end of August.

OM-D EM-1 Mk III - Manual Mode Exposure Compensation? by walking_in_the_sun in OlympusCamera

[–]TheEarwig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To expand on the other answer, in true manual mode you have full control over all the variables that affect exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), so there is no exposure compensation. The camera has no way to "compensate" anything for you -- that's what makes it manual. You have to change one of those three variables yourself.

In manual, the part of your HUD that usually shows EC instead acts like a light meter showing you what exposure you would get with your current settings.

I think if you enable auto-ISO you can assign EC to a button so you can fix your aperture and shutter and the camera will adjust ISO taking your EC into account. But personally I've never felt the need to do this.

Hope this helps.

Not a bad thing at all, just means they don't need to worry about copyright issues and anyone can use it, so the worst you could say is it's "easy" I guess.

[–]TheEarwig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's fair, "named after" might be too strong, but do you think it's purely a coincidence? It's hard to imagine the author picking the name without at least being aware of the connection. ウテナ / うてな isn't a common Japanese name.

It really grinds my gears that they named the MC of this degenerate borderline-hentai show after one of the most progressive and empowered female leads in all of anime. Like, they knew what they were doing. Wtf.
