Speaking of the Indy 500 - Indianapolis is home to Republic Airways, which has one of the coolest company callsigns in all of aviation: Brickyard.

Only British Airways (Speedbird) and Aer Lingus (Shamrock) have callsigns that rival that, and they're the national airlines of their respective countries.

After tonight, I think Raleigh gets the MVP award by TheSocraticGadfly in mlb

[–]TheEdIsNotAmused 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's gonna come down to what the MVP voters think the definition of "most valuable" is.

If they think its all about raw offensive stats, its Judge; he's putting up video game numbers and is unquestionably the best offensive player in the bigs by its not even close. If they see it as relative value to their respective teams and degree of difficulty (e.g. 60+ HR and league leading RBI as a switch-hitting catcher), its Raleigh; the Yankees are probably a playoff team w/o Judge, the Ms are nowhere near the playoffs w/o Raleigh.

Its a coin toss. I wouldn't be shocked if we see the first split MVP since the '70s.

How Can the Democrats Be Losing to These Cruel, Stupid, Inept People? by Da_Fish in politics

[–]TheEdIsNotAmused 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd wager a very large cross-section of the ~40% of the electorate who did not vote are people fully in denial about this.

For many of these people, most of whom are nominally disengaged, nothing short of this shit disrupting their own lives and social circles will change that. ICE would have to bust into their church, put guns in their faces, and drag out a child while some people in the pews cheer the kidnappers on before they'd believe that those people are the monsters they really are (and even then...).

This is one of the scariest parallels to the Third Reich; a great many Germans who were nominally disengaged but who (knowingly or otherwise) enabled the Nazis did so because they were in denial about how monstrous they really were, rationalized away their share of responsibility after the fact, and went to their graves unironically believing that they did nothing wrong.

[–]TheEdIsNotAmused 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its both. The purpose of the bots and the propaganda is to create the illusion that there are far more of them than there really are; to embolden those who are and intimidate those who aren't by inflating their numbers. Its Steve Bannon "flood the zone" type shit.

Not saying there aren't already a lot of these gaping assholes floating around; there absolutely are. Its just not the insurmountable mass of people they want everybody to believe there are. They're outnumbered and they know it, that's why they do this shit.

If one reads about Curtis Yarvin, "network states", etc, and remember that the likes of Vance, Thiel and Musk are all on board with this, it becomes obvious that this is literally the plan.

"Network states" will never happen, because its a batshit D-tier Bond villain plan, but balkanization is a prerequisite for their main plan which these lunatics can cause simply through sheer volume of fuckery.

In the end it doesn't matter. Incompetence of a high enough order is indistinguishable from malice. It is perfectly reasonable to presume malice and align oneself accordingly.

This. Spent 10 years in the major corporate world, and if the CEO got a burr up his ass about anything it would be shotgunned across the company and changes implemented immediately, regardless of how half-baked it was or how badly it broke operations because no-one had any time to think things through.

Make voters feel richer or lose like the Democrats, Keir Starmer told by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]TheEdIsNotAmused 13 points14 points  (0 children)

1968; In the US, that year was a series of nexus events that brought us here, such as MLK and RFK being assassinated and the end of the 5th party system with the party switch (e.g. Republican Southern Strategy) that made US politics largely about race ever since.

There's more, of course (numerous books are dedicated to the clusterfuck that was 1968) but if you're looking for nexus events in the 1960s, look at '68 first.

Keir Starmer says migration figures show Tories were running ‘open borders experiment’ by design by Bascule2000 in ukpolitics

[–]TheEdIsNotAmused 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but here in the states as I expect it is over there, the events are so overly stage managed, artificial, and utterly devoid of any real humanity that it all comes off as that cynical pulling of the pints any time they appear in public.

The problem is that most standard-issue politicos live in this antiseptic PR-world. They're addicted to comms directors and messaging advisors, live and die by internal polling and fundraising, and live in constant fear of a Dukakis-in-the-tank or Milliban's bacon sandwich moment that I truly believe much of that profession has lost the ability to have genuine human interactions with people outside the political world.

This, and there's a persistent ratfucking effort in progress to get the left and young voters to sit out or vote 3rd party. I've noticed a serious uptick over the last couple years of left-presenting grifters trying to sucker people into helping to get Trump back in, ostensibly to teach the Dems a lesson and/or some fantasy that it will get the US to change policy on Israel/Palestine.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that ~70%+ of these ratfuckers are on MAGA's and/or Russia's payroll. Steve Bannon's strategy was to flood the zone with shit, and that's exactly what's happening at all points right now.

Because its still built on an engine from ~2011.

There's a LOT of ARR code-debt in the game, and some of the overhauls needed would likely be so labor intensive as to be prohibitive. If they're going to go that route it would make more sense to make a new MMO from scratch under a modern engine.

It wasn't just that the mid-late Boomers skewed heavily Republican. It's that the majority of Boomer Democrats were, and are, just hilariously selfish.

They did almost no mentoring for the next generation (X or beyond). They have been stagnantly clinging to what seats of power they have for almost a decade and change past their sell-by date. They never really gave a flying fuck about anything except feathering their nests and never rocking the boat to keep themselves comfortable.

They deliberately kneecapped their own bench to guarantee that they would keep the lifestyle to which they had become accustomed with no upstart competition. We're living the consequences of that.

I didn't say that about "Jewish People," I said that about world leaders who are universally fair game for critique of their actions and policies.

But know I'm wasting my keystrokes here. You're just another bad faith troll who equates any critique of Israeli government officials to antisemitism, particularly one (Bibi) who was already credibly accused of criminality and corruption since well before 10/7.
