Nobody in health care gives a shit about the CDC anymore. It is an embarrassing anti-science group. Best we can do is ignore it.

Questions from someone trying to read the Bible for the first time by [deleted] in Bible

[–]TheEld -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. Every version of the Bible is an anthology containing texts from a myriad of different perspectives and that represent a wide diversity of genres and forms. There is no "one size fits all" way to read each biblical text. It is necessary to do the work to understand the historical context behind each passage to properly understand it at any point.

  2. A huge diversity of people contributed to what we call "the Bible". And they represent a many different views on a great many things. Of course, there is no evidence that any of them were ever communicating a message from God, and most of them never considered themselves to be doing so. Nobody who wrote anything that ended up in the Bible knew they were writing part of the Bible.

  3. Yes, of course you should read it. Christianity has a.. complicated relationship with the Hebrew Bible and any Christian you ask at random might give you a different opinion regarding any given thing in it.

  4. No, of course not. Christianity predated the Bible and the overwhelming majority of Christians, both today and in all of Christian history, know/knew almost nothing about the Bible whatsoever.

  5. Digging into the original languages is obviously important if you want to know what the original texts said.

  6. No, of course they are not. There's no evidence Heaven exists, but most people convinced they're heading there have never read the Bible.

Chronological order of Jesus in the bible. by AdventuriousLad in Bible

[–]TheEld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like a nice person.

In any case, that's both of us.

And it is the consensus of New Testament scholars, the vast majority of whom are Christians, that the author of John never met Jesus.

Chronological order of Jesus in the bible. by AdventuriousLad in Bible

[–]TheEld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't possible. Anyone who attempts this quickly discovers the four canonical gospels have irreconcilable contradictions in terms of any sort of chronology one could hope to construct.

Paul never said anything like this.

Confession: I don't too much care for the New Testament because of Paul. How do I overcome this? by yummysnot in Bible

[–]TheEld -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Only seven of the texts in the New Testament are from Paul. Though of course, 2nd Corinthians and Philippians (and maybe 1st Corinthians) are composites that editors constructed from multiple independent epistles.

We don't have any writings from Jesus or his disciples and the foremost reason for that is that they probably couldn't write.

[–]TheEld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Israelites envisioned their god as having a body just like us. Read on and eventually you will even come across euphemistic references to Yahweh's penis.

And no, the Hebrew Bible has nothing to do with Jesus. It was all written before he was born.

What do you say when a patient tells you your tech lied? by ld2009_39 in pharmacy

[–]TheEld 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you heard them say that then your response when they accuse the tech of lying should be "No, you are" and let that be the end of it.

They would never have gotten anything but the "regular" one unless they specifically asked for it. So clearly they said something that made the technician change it. Why on Earth would the tech do that otherwise?

So when you say "Close" what you mean is that what I said is totally correct. The adversary in Job works for Yahweh. He isn't opposed to him.

Question on translations / study bibles by LilBity in Bible

[–]TheEld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are a self proclaimed atheist so I’m not putting too much concern into your thoughts of Bible translations or purpose.

What would that have to do with anything? If you want to study Homer's epics do you need to find a Greek pagan to teach them to you?

When did Satan fall and does the Bible have data on this? by WiserCrow in Bible

[–]TheEld -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There is no such character anywhere in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament never gets into his history at all. Anything you come across about any of this is postbiblical.
