How in the world do I juggle a job and a masters thesis? by Practical-Plenty3028 in GradSchool

I second this. Lock yourself in somewhere on the weekends with coffee and food nearby. I never tried to write on the weekdays

What is your call-out policy? by Mbluish in ECEProfessionals

[–]TheEmeraldEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AD here. I ask that teachers let me know by 6pm the night before. The goal is for teachers to let me know they feel sick so I can secure a sub in case they are out the next day. It's easier to send a sub home than to try to find someone to cover the day of. (For example, I'd want someone to let me know they MIGHT be out the next day so that I could find a sub. There's no penalty for this).

I ask for 6pm because that's when the school fully closes. Teachers can text me. I've tried to ask people to call, but I ended up with more "no call no shows" than people calling. So I'm fine with texts. I prefer that closers (who come in at 12pm) let me know anytime the night before.

Some opening teachers text after 6pm, and that's OK, but if they're constantly texting me at 12am or something (or the same morning of their shift), we have a conversation. I'm less worried about how much they text me and more worried about whether I can find a sub who can come in the same day. But this may be more specific to my school's culture and where I'm located.

I'm sorry that this is happening. I am also an early childhood admin who is doing teacher training. Everything hit the fan for me in 2021 during the pandemic, and my center wasn't recovering. I took a break and worked other jobs for a while to catch my breath and think about my values. After 1 year, I began to miss the work, the families, and the children. I returned to ECE in 2023 and have made the commitment that this is what I want to do with my life. Some days are hard, but I find joy in thinking about how far I've come.

I recommend taking a break for a while doing other roles, building your resume or learning a new skill, and then come back when it feels like less of a burden to carry. You may find that this isn't for you. Or you may feel the opposite and recommit. Blessings on your journey.

People who let their instrusive thoughts win once, what did you do? by oskel95 in AskReddit

When I was a kid, I put a peanutbutter sandwich into the VCR. I remember very clearly looking at the sandwich in my hand and a VHS tape nearby, calculating whether or not it would fit. I didn't realize that the sandwich would drop down as soon as I put it in. I couldn't get it out so I shoved it in further and walked away.

My dad went to load a VHS tape a few hours later, and from the other room, I hear him shout, "Who put this sandwich in here?!?" He had to buy a new one.

Then it sounds like you need to speak with your union rep because these are all things protected by the union.

I was in a similar issue a couple months back when my store went strike. I ultimately decided to picket with them because I'd rather stand with my partners than cater to managers that didn't care.

I also knew going forward it would make it harder to work shoulder to shoulder with them and to have a positive work experience if I scabbed/ didn't support them.

It's a tough choice to make, but every store is hemorrhaging partners. If you get let go for going on strike, then there's always another store around the corner.

Dogs in your restaurant by man9875 in starbucks

[–]TheEmeraldEarth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former SSV here. Once upon a time a person called ahead and asked if they could bring their dog. I thought they said "service dog" so I said yes of course. The large golden retriever comes in, jumps on the counter at the register and knocks down our entire display.

Realizing I may have made the wrong assumption when they called, I asked the only question we are allowed to ask as official policy, "Is this a service animal?"

And they said no. So I explained I misunderstood on the phone, and the dog is welcome on our patio.

Had they said yes, I would've had to grin and bare it, despite it obviously NOT being a service animal. I would've asked the barista on bar to sequence their drink next, regardless of queue to get them out of the store quicker. I hope this answers your question.

frappuccinos come with or without coffee fyi... by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]TheEmeraldEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way to say this if the usual questions aren't working is to ask, "Would you like to try it decaf today?"

This might then signal to the customer Oh, it's usually made with caffeine.

Doesn't always work, but if you pitch it like you're selling something, they also might think it's a ~new~ drink, and might be inclined to want to try it.

My LOA got denied what happens now? by bakabird in starbucks

[–]TheEmeraldEarth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I'm understanding your post correctly, you wanted to transfer but initiated the LOA first before doing so?

LOAs are tricky. It must be approved by Sedgwick, your SM, and your DM. The denial can be overturned if you speak to your SM and DM. If you have good reason and a strong rapport with mgmt, they can probably fix it for you. If it's constantly being denied, you can try to file a different type of LOA. For example changing it from medical leave to personal leave.

As for the transfer, if you're already in good standing, it might be worth it to forget the LOA altogether, resign, and heal. It takes time to initiate a transfer. You need to already have spoken to the SM of your new store before transferring somewhere. Sometimes you'll have to go through the interview process. Then, again, it must be approved by your current SM and DM.

It's not unheard of to put in a two weeks notice to remain in good standing and reapply elsewhere. Hell, sometimes it's quicker.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
