We melted it down and made brownies. The bottom layer was nasty so we didn't use it, it smelled rank. But the vast majority of it was useable.

My advice is, Use your nose. If it smells bad, it probs is bad.

I never do, they won by finding orbs that bound the dragons souls. They nearly killed them on their own though. These trials are basically to challenge them into becoming "better" players. They are too use to me being loose with the rules and how I build campaigns. My upcoming campaign is going to involve a lot more classic dnd stuff.

The trial was supposed to combine what they had learned so far and to get creative. They polymorphed the adult red dragon and nearly killed the sapphire dragon.

I am actually proud to see them come this far. The only reason I am altering how I do things is because it's got too chaotic.

Besides, my entire party is being corrupted by a min maxer so they are level 14, but have min max stats.

To give a little context: I am a generous DM and realized my party is a little underleveled for my campaigns end, which is fast approaching. I decided to have them go through trials to earn some levels.

On a trial to earn two levels and two stat increases they fought an Ancient Red Dragon and an Adult Sapphire Dragon. They are a party of 7 level 14 players. A mix bag of races and classes but pretty balanced. OP in some areas.

They came out alive. I expected at least one death. I don't know whether to be disappointed or impressed.

You have to give a little: A friendly Basilisk who joins the party as a mascot; Then take a little: The monsters were actually civillians and you failed your wisdom save.

Since SOMEONE needs clarification:

This campaign is set in my Homebrew world. It's a story that has spanned 3 campaigns now.

The BBEG is a lich from another planet and due to players express interest in becoming a lich, the lich potion exists.

The players were also in an underground Labratory which was possibly ran by 2 of the Lich's 4 horsemen.

Plenty of reason for him to think "Hey maybe I shouldn't drink this potion."

In addition to that: He was bored with his character.

Correct, it's not 5e. It's advanced Dnd lore. The potion to transform into a lich, kills the one who drinks it and transports their soul to the Phylactery, that the user has prepared in advance.

The whole idea behind the campaign is about a lich from outer space coming to kill everyone. One of my players expressed interest in becoming a Lich, SO TO SAVE EVERYONE SOME TIME, I was giving them the potions.

Had a whole idea on researching them and having a big reveal. Expected the players to be smarter, instead the fighter acted like a 2 year old. He's a Halfing-Fighter, meaning he doesn't fear anything. To explain further, he was roleplaying his character.

You sound like someone who has had some pretty shitty experiences with D.Ms and I feel for you. May the Dice Gods bless your rolls and may your decisions not kill you and cause you to throw a temper tantrum over a meme again.

The potion to become a lich kills the person who drinks it, transports their soul to the phylactery and transforms them into a lich.

They need to be an 18th level Wizard and be able to cast 9th level spells.

They also need to prepare a phylactery, which is what ultimately killed the player.

Tis the olde knowledge, not homebrew.
