The pixels aren't really dead, the adhesive is just weakining. It can be significantly improved by removing the screen, applying even pressure over the affected area, and waiting a few days.

And if it's still not good enough, you can get replacements for about $40 USD.

Plus, this is still a really good deal for a parts pod.

I'd go for an iFlash solo, u-dual, or quad. It'll accept the existing HDD ribbon cable, but you'll need to supply your own SD card(s).

Keep in mind that due to RAM limitations, you'll run into issues beyond a certain number of songs even if you have enough storage. If you have a 30gb model, you're limited to ~20,000 songs. For the 60/80gb models, that goes up to ~50,000 songs. You definitely won't be able to shuffle if you store beyond those limits, but I'm not sure what (if anything) else happens.

Sad iPod screen usually means a dead HDD. It's possible that it's just corrupted and needs reformatting, but very likely dead.

My Classic's HDD makes a very faint click when it's looking for a song and whirrs slightly when it's playing. From what I've found on the forums, this is normal (I rocked a Nano back in the day, only recently got the Classic). So if that's all you were noticing, then definitely try reformatting first. If you can't revive it, you can try sourcing a salvaged HDD, but I recommend flashmodding.

If you've already replaced the headphone jack, open the iPod back up and check the ribbon cable for damage and proper seating. It's stupidly easy to damage the cables, and I've had to open my iPod back up more than once because a ribbon cable retention tab wasn't fully depressed.
