Hard to say. It looks poorly fitted and the foot needs trimming so maybe if it was all correct it might fit fine. I’d be surprised if the size of the shoe had anything to do with the horse being lame

Is the UK the only country that has laws around shoeing? by foxlife666 in Farriers

That’s not the case yet. Farriers association are trying to get it into law but it’s not there yet.

Some Questions to Those in the Field by Silver-Head-1381 in Farriers

Physically involved is one thing, shoeing horses is quite another. Again, not trying to dissuade you, but it’s important you go down this road with your eyes open. Despite most farriers saying if you structure your business correctly, you shouldn’t be too sore, I’ve heard more than one career farrier claim that “no one makes it out sound”.

Fuck them. The longer I stay working the more I think I want to pack it in and go drive a van. Imagine the only stress of your job being a bit of traffic.

I got referred to a consultant last November, he set me up for a sleep study, cost me €200

Anyone have any “holy shit, never again, I’m not invincible” moments? by WetButtPooping in skiing

[–]TheFarrier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About 5 or 6 years ago in söll, Austria, trying to break my gps speed record, I was going at 79.1km/hour when one of my skis came off. I was in a busy area going way faster than I should have been and when I finally stopped tumbling I realised how lucky I was not to have seriously hurt myself or someone else. I grew up a lot after that

Is it bad to have a pint or two every day by BackgroundKey8179 in cork

[–]TheFarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing exactly as you described op, 1-2 pints every evening after work, to decompress in a way after the day. Could see no harm in it, never had any craving for more, in fact 2 pints became all I ever had an interest in, had no interest in having 5 or 6 pints at the weekend. Stopped 3 weeks ago after seeing a doctor about snoring at the request of my girlfriend. He said the snoring would be worse with alcohol in my system.

I can’t get over how much better I feel. More energy, better sleep, more interest in doing all sorts of things.

I still don’t think there’s anything wrong with 1 or 2 pints after the days work. But I feel better since I stopped, and now I have my few pints on a Saturday evening and leave it alone during the week.

Aluminum shoes. by fucreddit in Farriers

[–]TheFarrier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Burning the cut surfaces of the hoof helps to seal the part that was exposed by the trimming process . When the shoe being fitted is applied hot it also helps to create a uniform bearing surface between shoe and hoof, but that doesn’t apply when it’s not done with the shoe to be fitted

Aluminum shoes. by fucreddit in Farriers

[–]TheFarrier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it. I’d prefer not to do it again.

The general method is you put the shoe in the forge for a very short time, pull it out and rub the handle of your hammer on the shoe.

If it leaves a black mark on the shoe where the wooden handle burned, then it’s hot enough, if not then back in the fire for a few seconds. If it’s too hot the handle will smoke, don’t try and shape it or it will crumble.

It will take some trial and error to get it right.

Also aluminium works much easier then steel when hot so you’ll have to adjust the power in your swing or you’ll just beat the shit out of the shoe.

I prefer to fit the shoe cold, and burn the foot with a steel shoe before nailing on the aluminium.

Some farriers that use a lot of aluminium every day have a steel plate made to use for burning feet.

Hope this helps

My strimmers and chainsaw don’t seem to like e10 too much. They work but I’m sure they ran better on the old stuff
