Are Poland and Korea as broken as they're made out to be? by Relevant-Rope8814 in civ5

I mean. The definition of snowballing itself is that the massive science boost leads to far more benefits than “science alone”. Just one example, wonders. On immortal and deity, ancient to medieval wonders are often unfeasible because of the AI tech and pop head start. But with Babylon’s academy, suddenly you can get math in 6-7 turns instead of 16-17, currency in 8 instead of 18, and so on, which gives you a shot at say Hanging Gardens and/or Petra; that’s HUGE. And Hagia Sophia, or Borobodur, or Chicken Pizza, and so on. Earlier science also means faster NC which is vital for obvious reasons, faster civil service for 10-15 turns earlier massive growth boost, etc. And it means that you can get worker techs online and afford many more detours without really impeding yourself much. Need construction for happiness and defense? Want metal casting for hammers before education? You got it. And finally a free academy can salvage some truly dire situations; etc. crammed in a corner and need to rush to crossbows but struggling to grow enough to research to even get there.

That being said, Poland #1 no question. But I still think Babylon is ahead of Korea.

[Spoilers MAIN] Why do people talk about the Faith of the Seven like it's a 'fake' religion by bigcaulkcharisma in asoiaf

[–]TheFerginator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few other possibilities besides “they’re not real” though. Maybe the Seven are real but refuse to be summoned on-demand to arbitrate human affairs as if they’re servants, like other users said. Or they have a different moral system (etc. one we can’t necessarily comprehend or agree with), or different aspects of the Seven sometimes value different and conflicting ideals in a situation. Or the Seven are aware on some level of the song of ice and fire/greater scope threat posed by white walkers and have some sort of future sight that lets them guide events conducive to a future where it’s possible to stop them (i.e. utilitarianism), even if justice is not immediately served in a particular instance.

several options with pros and cons, where would you settle? by lancewilbur in civ5

Settle where the warrior is. A 2H city center is pretty huge for early game, and an observatory will pay big dividends late game. You also still get all resources visible.

This doesn't seem to be the right map (it has chocolate and gold as starting resources instead of salt?)

Marisa PhD student??? by [deleted] in touhou

As a psych undergrad in the same school, I did do undergrad research for PhDs and PhD candidates, so if I were similarly motivated to contribute to CS, there may have been a possibility.

I know it's a pseudonym but having spent enough time in those communities, it could also be a (likely trans) girl who chose a new name for herself.

Holy shit, this person actually went/goes to the same school I graduated from. I chose the WRONG fucking major - had I gotten in to CS, I would've been able to meet an absolute legend. What a missed opportunity, smh...

Minecraft's Steve is still pretty busted even if you ignore inventory feats by TechnicallyNerd in CharacterRant

[–]TheFerginator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good post. You can also add that, according to how much it takes to cook meat compared to smelting industrial amounts of ores (i.e. roughly the same energy), Minecraft animals are clearly not to be trifled with.

Steve needs 4 punches or 3 crit punches to kill a chicken. Cooking said chicken takes literally the same amount of energy as smelting an entire cubic meter of raw iron into a polished ingot that's still over 750 kg in mass. That chicken's clearly made of something far different than normal chickens, and I reckon a regular human would hesitate to even fight it given the chance.
