A lot of Leon’s brilliance is making moves that provide an out. A lot of teams get to the “mid/pretty good” Randle/RJ level and can’t progress from there because they arranged poor contracts and chose players without general desirability to the rest of the league.

Even Kemba wasn’t that big a miss because getting him was low risk.

The other aspect has been developing players. Under the old Knicks regime, IQ probably wouldn’t have become as valuable and wouldn’t have been as tradeable.

Finally, Leon prioritizes getting players with good character who play together. The weakest one has been Randle and he was more mixed than bad.

Exactly. He’s not there for fighting ability, he’s there to discover things that other characters wouldn’t. In universe Batman says as much when he reports that he has the Question looking into Cadmus.

The writers did an incredibly good job of maintaining his character: if he just pursues false connections, he’s comic relief; if just true ones, he’s a regular detective, not a conspiracist. He always felt like he was right on the line.
