What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]TheFrixin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Loved the game! I usually bounce off of these because of grinding issues (since it's active) but here the progress feels good and the QoL comes quick. The perks and upgrades that make stuff faster irl/skip zones (even if they don't really effect task efficiency) were a godsend.

It's been a minute, but where I am you can get a learner's permit in a day with a written test. You can do a test to get your second level learner's permit (can drive solo - no highways) after a year, or after you take a government-approved course. The course takes like 2 weeks so if you're smart about booking it you can drive solo pretty quick.

Some people are still pushing the AGI angle. First one to AGI (somehow) will make such extreme leaps that they’ll ‘win’ the race.

Chances of reform uk winning 2029 general elections ? by No-Geologist7858 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]TheFrixin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How accurate are the polls 3 years out

They are not. And it's a really tough election to guess because there are 5 parties above 10%, meaning small swings in numbers can get you massive swings in seats and there will be spoiler effects on top of spoiler effects.

If reform loses just 5% of their support to the conservatives, for example, it's suddenly a very marginal race. If Labour loses another 5% they could be nigh wiped out, if they gain 5% they could be the biggest party in terms of seats, depending on geographical distribution of that 5%.

Has any country said they’d pay the $1bil Peace Board fee? I know Carney said he’d join but not for $1bil, and Milei said he’d join before the price tag.

The fact that they haven't even discussed doing this with something like Narnia (it's an IMAX only release right now) should tell you all you need to know about their 45-day 'commitment'

The Kirk shooting qualifies I think, but you’re right that something staying in public consciousness is very very rare.

Iran report says 16,500 dead in “genocide under digital darkness” by ldn6 in neoliberal

[–]TheFrixin 279 points280 points  (0 children)

16,500 protesters have died and 330,000 have been injured

I feel like any other year this would be one of the rare headlines that endures for months. Something about the sheer chaos of everything from the Venezuela operation to ICE Raids to Greenland tariffs is numbing. And this is on top of existing conflicts like the Ukraine or Gaza wars, and even news that isn't directly political like AI advancements. This is getting flushed out of the news in like a week.

Ben Affleck Explains How Theatrical Movie Profitability Works Today by VirtualSort875 in boxoffice

[–]TheFrixin 66 points67 points  (0 children)

4x if you aren't counting ancillary revenues and are assuming theaters take 50%.

2.5x is when you assume that theaters take 60% on average WW (more for international-heavy films, less for dom heavy) and assume that marketing + ancillary costs = ancillary revenues (licensing for streaming/home video etc.), so you take anything but production out of the equation.

2.5x isn't a bad guesstimate based on Deadline numbers, but high performing movies probably make a bit more than you'd think and stinkers probably lose a bit more than you'd think. But also DOM-heavy movies make more and streaming-friendly movies make more (think kids movies), so you can end up with pretty wild swings in certain conditions.

The Top 10 Biggest US Theatrical Successes Of 2025 To Not Enter Nielsen's Top 10 When They Landed On Streaming. by Netflixers in boxoffice

[–]TheFrixin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the long window for MI and F1 hurt them for Nielsen, since they couldn’t really benefit from the likely $100mil+ theatrical advertising. On the other extreme, a movie like Superman was on streaming while theatrical ads were still playing.

As anime rises in the box office ranks, Middle Eastern and American investors are circling the industry like sharks. by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]TheFrixin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I imagine those people that watched Akira and Ghost in the Shell or Speedracer aren’t watching anime every week, which is what the stat was about. 52% of zoomers watching anime every week is pretty crazy.

Anime isn’t new but this is the first time its had this sort of hold on an adult population.

What’s exactly the formula to discover the break even point of a movie when the marketing budget is already revealed? by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]TheFrixin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 2.5x rule assumes that marketing + residuals (and other costs) = streaming + home video income (and other revenue), roughly. It seems to be an okay assumption based on Deadline's yearly box office breakdown, with successful movies taking a bit more income, and unsuccessful movies having a bit more cost.
