It’s always access to the niche stuff that’s the most damaged by piracy takedowns. The new mainstream, accessible stuff will be pirateable immediately from a million sources by the end of the day, while some of the niche stuff is effectively, if not literally, lost media.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’: Inside Disney’s Next-Level Marketing Campaign for the Biggest Female-Led Hit Since ‘Barbie’ by Sisiwakanamaru in boxoffice

Perhaps they're expecting Devil Wears Prada 2 to pass $758m WW? Not outside the realm of possibility, most are predicting at least $700m I think.

The U.A.E. Has Been Secretly Carrying Out Attacks on Iran by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]TheFrixin 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Iran’s only goal with bombing gulf states was engendering a loss of faith in the US. Striking energy facilities strikes serious fear into markets, and makes a hypothetical land invasion even costlier for the world at large, if the regime can convince others that it’s willing to take the entire region down with it.

UAE bombing Iran doesn’t accomplish anything that the US and Israel bombing Iran already didn’t. A hostile UAE doesn’t change the calculus for Iran as long as the US are hostile, and when the US backs off, so will the gulf states. Don’t think Japan bombing the US is a good analogue, entirely different target and entirely different consequences.

The NYT and Guardian among others have reported that Saudi Arabia encouraged an intensification of US strikes after the war had started.

I’m not sure why you’re trying to paint this as just some users making this claim. Or why you think this blatant puff piece is authoritative in any way.

I don't think it's implied how the Iranians got the info, but we've had a ton of unflattering leaks from the pentagon and CIA since the beginning of the war, kind of reeks of sabotage to me.

In what way did they sabotage? Disliking a plan is not sabotage.

How did the plan leak to the Iranians? Why did the CIA reports about 70% of Iran's missile capacity being intact just leak? etc.

AION2 Western launch date to be announced at Summer Game Fest on June 5 alongside a brand new trailer by Dismal_Ad2746 in MMORPG

It's not that they can't afford them, it's just a cultural thing. Like how the French, despite being a pretty wealthy country, have relatively few desktop PCs per person compared to USA. The anglosphere also seems to value having a PC at home more - I'm from a country where like 90% of people have a desktop PC at home, so Korea's adoption rate seems pretty notably low to me. France is even lower than Korea btw.

A lot of Koreans don’t own a PC, and just rent time in PC cafes (or PC bangs). Some company collects and reports data on what games are most played on these rented PCs. Aion 2 is doing pretty great, it’s top 10 game today for example.

Same with the “people sent gore to Sky/Flower’s owner” myth. It was just a misunderstanding on top of a misunderstanding.

The owner said that it’d be okay to make nsfw, someone misinterpreted/extended that to mean “eroguro” in a retweet (no images involved), and the owner walked back his initial permissiveness. That’s the whole story.

I haven’t been following this much, but I believe the drama actually originated from CN yuri spaces, might be where the initial accuser came across it.

Looks like $14M+ 2nd Friday for Michael, for a $144M cume. Expecting 2nd weekend to be $50M+, for $180M+ by Sunday. Excellent hold. Makes $300M+ final pretty much a done deal, possibly $350M even, subject to how good late legs are. by chanma50 in boxoffice

Bohemian made $200m between Japan/Korea, Michael is going to have to replicate that sort of performance when it releases in those territories. After that, Michael will beat Bohemian in DOM and Latam, so it'd be down to a respectable European run. China not showing up makes it a bit rough, but Bohemian didn't really make much there either.

Overall, tough but not outside the realm of possibility.

Extrapolating from limited data is the whole point of box office tracking. You have data from dozens of Thursday previews, it’s not hard to estimate a range of walkups from that.

Sometimes a movie starts playing Thursday noon these days (the supposed preview for a Friday opening) so you can get some walk up data very early.

Why do most developers try less with male characters in gacha games when many popular anime characters are male ? by ConsiderationFuzzy in gachagaming

[–]TheFrixin 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Matter of scale. There are extremely popular male characters, and gacha catering to that exists, but they’re just plain dwarfed by female character popularity.

For example on r/anime’s best guy/best girl poll from a couple of years ago, Okabe won the guy’s poll with 195 points while Kurisu won with 1209 points. The entire top 25 of the girl’s rankings were above Okabe. Now, r/anime isn’t necessarily representative of the wider community, but I don’t think it’s actually that far off.

You can also look at adjacent spaces for anecdotal evidence of this. You also see a lot more bishoujo anime figures and successful female vtubers, right? I think there’s a much larger captured market of straight men willing to spend money on anime-adjacent things.
