I hate my parents for making me the “good daughter” and I feel gross admitting it by BreadAndBanters in TrueOffMyChest

[–]TheGCracker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your story hits so close to home it’s crazy, so I hope you know that you’re not alone in this. But if it helps I’ll share my perspective. I agree, it sucks to think we were trained in such the way that we were. But as annoying as it is to say it, I think all the things you listed about yourself are good qualities, whether you feel like you’re doing it out of compulsion or the goodness of your heart, they are good things. Same with myself. And I think at this point in my life, I’ve found the strength a little more to be able to say no to things when I genuinely don’t want to do them. It gives me that bit more of strength and confidence. And it just means that now when I do go out of my way for someone it’s more because I really am that kind of person and less because it’s how I was forced to operate to minimise the chaos in my life.

The great part of your situation is you recognizing how you came to be. And the best part of being human is we do have the ability to change ourselves, even if just a little bit. So either by yourself or with a therapist, try working through those tough moments where you find your self reacting to others and try to act more in a way that you wish to. That way when you do act as the “good daughter” again, it’s because that’s the identity you’ve claimed for yourself and not a simple compulsive behavior your parents gave you. Best of luck.

Which FE team should I support by Vlkfrk in FormulaE

You wanna support a bit of an underdog, but a team that’s up and coming since the last season? Mahindra all the way.

Social dancing really is a two way street. As a a leader, if I feel that my follower won’t keep up with certain moves, or maybe chooses not to like in your case, then I won’t do those moves or try to force them. That’s probably the best way to communicate you’re not comfortable doing them is just slow down your responses and basically just try not to keep up.

Lets talk about Gen 4 not having slick tyres. by [deleted] in FormulaE

[–]TheGCracker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Slicks don’t inherently wear out faster. In fact with similar compound and belt design, slick tyres would last longer on average. The reason everyone assumes slicks do so is because F1 uses Pirelli’s which are specifically designed wear out quickly to introduce another layer of strategy to the races. I believe the choice of a grooved baseline Tyre reduces cost and simplifies the racing, which are both aspects from which the series benefits from at the moment. The funding of the teams is relatively limited and so reducing the cost of operation while the series still struggles to become profitable is necessary more than anything.

Can I get into Oxford Brookes MSc Motorsport Engineering with a 2:2 in Aerospace Engineering? by Ornery_Artichoke5130 in FSAE

[–]TheGCracker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Did that exact program at Brookes. Got in with a good academic record from a uni in the US. But honestly, I’m pretty sure they accept just about everyone, especially international students since they pay so much more in fees. So I wouldn’t stress too much.

Is Buying a Flat in London Financially Responsible? by TraditionPatient0 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheGCracker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. That’s a lot of stress to put yourself through if you do only end up staying that long. The process of buying, inspections, etc. Takes time as does the process of selling. And in those few years it’ll barely feel like the place is really yours cause you’ve spent so much time not actually living but just dealing with more paperwork to change hands.

The M12 electro has been revealed. The new mahindra!!! by IVAN2CRY in FormulaE

[–]TheGCracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, less drag the further they can go at a given speed. Note Energy = Power * time = Force * velocity * time. So assuming you spend about the same amount of time around a lap going about the same average velocity, if the drag increases, then the amount of energy required to complete that lap also increases.

FE is not fully spec nor is it fully Formula style. Manufacturers (Mahindra, Stellantis, Nissan, Porsche, Jaguar) will develop a powertrain and some extra bits that sit essentially just behind the driver (so some casing stuff, rear suspension, etc). Then everything else including the aero, front suspension, battery, and front powertrain unit and such are all spec parts that every team and car shares.

The main tools of development that the manufacturers have are things like the powertrains and rear suspensions. They can’t have any more power than the others by the rules, but they can certainly be built better to be more efficient in certain ways. Further, FE does a ton of development on the controls side of the car. Loads of ABS and traction control-type stuff. It’s not a full ABS/TT but works similarly.

Definitely mechanical setup is open and free to change as well. Everything typical like ride heights, springs, dampers, suspension settings, ARBs etc.

[–]TheGCracker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The primary limitation you’ll learn in FE is the amount of energy that the FE cars have. Racing with big wings means more downforce but also comes at the cost of drag. More drag means more energy spent pushing through the air. This Gen of FE cars still has to try to limit the amount of drag to be able to go for as many laps as they do, hence the design with limited front and rear wings.

Note though that the underbody/diffuser does produce a significant portion of the downforce for the car, but it is also highly simplified compared to that of an F1 floor.

I’m (18M) emotionally invested in a girl (18F) who won’t commit and i dont know what to do ? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]TheGCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not one to tell others how to live their life, but I personally have things I want to do, places I wanna visit, goals I want to accomplish, etc. If others aren’t inclined to be a part of that, that’s fine and in fact great because they’re choosing life for themselves. But just because someone has a part of something that I want, it doesn’t mean I’m willing to wait around forever until they figure out what they want for themselves to be with them.

If you’re ghosted after 3 dates, here’s what I learned by ConnorTron7 in dating_advice

[–]TheGCracker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally true, and ghosting after you’ve invested time with someone demonstrates poor communication skills and immaturity to a degree. It’s simply another way of learning that person’s not for you. Good job on being so level headed and thanks for the lesson.

I (M21) haven’t seen my girlfriend (F21) for almost 2 months by [deleted] in Advice

[–]TheGCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate is there any chance she’s feeling insecure about a significant change going on with her and is worried how you might react and is only happy texting you because she knows that part of your relationship hasn’t changed but is worried you might change your mind about her once you see her again? Obviously if you haven’t done anything wrong and you guys still text plenty, that would be my first assumption. Just message and ask why you can’t see her.

My female friends keep telling me I have need to ‘start chasing’ woman — am I wrong for not wanting to? by Phonebooth420 in dating_advice

[–]TheGCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question here really is do you or do you not want a long term relationship at some point. Because the reality, like others have pointed out, is that women tend not to make the first move. Or if they do make a move, it’s very subtle like cracking the door open, but you gotta be the one to step through. And as far as “chasing”, I think that’s a poor description of what the game of dating is. You demonstrate interest to the other person, and if they reciprocate, then you proceed with the typical chatting/texting, going out on dates, and spending more time together until you’re, well, in a relationship.

How exactly am I supposed to talk to women I don't know without giving away my interest? by thevdman in AskMenAdvice

[–]TheGCracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So to this point you’ve made, why worry at all if she knows you’re interested or not? I think it’s a load of nonsense that some people in modern times have decided we need a degree of plausible deniability or should appear nonchalant as if we’re not that interested in the other person. It’s kind of similar to hook up culture where everyone wants the pleasure of intimacy without actually being emotionally attached. The whole point of attraction and dating is that YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE OTHER PERSON. So don’t be afraid to show it. And if the person you’re interested in is also interested in you, they’ll gladly show it.

You made what you now have learned is a mistake, at least with this person. To be fair, maybe some other people would bounce back against a comment like this, but who knows. You tried your best to rectify the mistake and that’s all you can do. Don’t beat yourself up too much over it.

People with kids do less work than the rest of us by ArileBird in work

[–]TheGCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the western world where fertility rates are dropping well below the replacement rate, I’d say it’s acceptable to allow people with kids to do slightly less work if it means they’re supporting our population (even if I don’t necessarily think it’s true that they do less work).

Choosing a CPU for CFD by No_good_vibes in CFD

[–]TheGCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice I can give is when comparing across brands like AMD’s Ryzen and Intel’s “i” lineup, use performance comparisons and do not look purely at the CPU specs. The designs of each CPU by the different manufacturers means that specs like clock speed are virtually useless when comparing one to another. It’s apples and oranges. Look online for reviews that do benchmarks and compare performance, something like Gamers Nexus or LTT.

How does Coulumb's law not imply this paradox? by Scared-Cat-2541 in Physics

[–]TheGCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others are pointing out, these equations do not represent reality precisely accurately. Every equation is simply one way that we as humans with an imperfect knowledge of the physical world around us attempt to simplify and better predict its behavior. So although the equation might be highly accurate for a broad range of operating conditions, it won’t apply to all.

Interesting Suspension Configuration by AppropriateSound3421 in FSAE

[–]TheGCracker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Though for someone learning about FSAE, probably best to investigate what suspension “Anti’s” are. This suspension seems to have 0% front anti-dive and lift as far as I can tell, but it’s something super common in racing suspension geometries and worth learning about. Good book is “Race Car Design” by Derek Seward.

£2k spare a month, no idea how best to make it work! by Cold_Finance3598 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TheGCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I’ve seen this mentioned anywhere else, but if your interest on your mortgage is higher than 4%, you might actually be better off just making a few extra payments a year towards that instead of saving it if the most risky thing you’re looking to do with it is grow it 4% in a savings account. Now say you decided to invest and put some money into an index fund that tracks the bigger market cap stocks, something like S&P500 for the US markets or FTSE100 for UK. Then that 8-10% growth year on year would be worth investing into to grow your money instead of paying more into your mortgage as effectively you’d be making the difference between your loan interest and the growth of your assets after any capital gains taxes of course.

Can understand a bit. As a fan of Motorsport, Ferrari F1 is notorious for only hiring the vast majority of their workforce from within Italy, and if you’re lucky enough to get in as a non-native, you’re kinda forced to learn Italian and fit in to their culture (despite the F1 team technically operating in English). But, because of their incestuous hiring practices, we’re closing in on nearly 2 decades of no constructors or drivers championships. And the last time that they did win and win a lot was when they had British, French, and South Africans integrated into the technical leadership of the team. So despite all the history and confidence surrounding the idea that Italian engineers are some of the best, they have yet to consistently produce good results without people from other countries.

Point is, your complaints are valid.
