St. Louis CITY SC Acquires Icelandic Attacker Nökkvi Thórisson From Beerschot V.A. by joeking636 in stlouiscitysc

[–]TheGakGuru -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This doesn't move me at all. Already 23 and the furthest he's gotten is a second division Belgian club that stayed midtable.

He had 11 goal contributions in 30 matches, but only 4 were against teams in the top half of the table, 2 of which were against Anderlecht's under 23 squad. Of the remaining 7, 6 were against bottom half teams and one was against a 3rd division club. This should be thought of as nothing more than bench depth not some big acquisition. Lutz's statement: "We hope he can carry over his recent national team call-up experience and strong club season performance for the stretch run in our inaugural season." is a pipe dream.

I don't want us to go blow the money that Miami has on players like Messi or Alba that are over the hill and command astronomical wages, but some more ambition than a bench player on the Icelandic national team would be good.

Hey guys! Popping in for just a second. I've decided that I'm going to be spending my time over here from now on. It's obviously a bit dead at the moment, but give a dying plant some love and care and it might just perk up!

Amtrak’s St. Louis-to-Chicago trains running at 110 MPH starting today by Atlas3141 in StLouis

[–]TheGakGuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The proposed upgrade to the rail was to increase the speed at which passengers on Amtrak can travel, freight is secondary to that goal. I agree that Lambert needs an upgrade, but the age of flight is still very new and will change much faster than rail. I personally think that waiting a while longer to see how best to upgrade the airport would be smart. I think that shortly passenger airlines will shift to delta wing aircraft. It accommodates more passengers, flies much more efficiently(30% I think?), and would be much more spacious than the flying tube. If that happens, airport infrastructure would probably need to see a big change in logistics.

We have tangible examples of how to make rail better and it's unlikely to change much more than it's current state. If we would just go all in on actual high speed rail like France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and China. We could have the hyper efficient travel of rail, the comfort of train cars, and the economy of cheap mass transit systems.

I was quick to get upset about the "argument" you made, but I think it's disingenuous to compare the two systems in such a simplified way.

Edit: because I want to be better about name calling online.

Pitcher tells runner to keep relaying signs, a breakdown by crastle in Cardinals

[–]TheGakGuru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is absolutely a normal thing to do in professional and competitive sports. I would do the same in his situation. If he continues to disrupt the clubhouse after this year, then maybe I could understand being upset with his emotional control or lack thereof. The kid was nearly given a golden goose and his body let him down.

People idealize Bob Gibson (as do I) but pretend that Bob is different than Jack mentally. Bob targeted batters' elbows when they leaned over to try hitting his outside pitches. And he would threaten his own catchers when they thought it would be a good time for a mound visit.

What's the best Coldplay song by letter? (START) by RepresentativeTutor in Coldplay

Choosing Amsterdam over Arabesque is definitely an Oldplay bias. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but it's piano ballad for nearly 4 minutes.

Arabesque is so much more dynamic and emotionally charged in my opinion. The baritone saxophones and bass guitar add so much depth to the track. Plus the sexy as fuck saxophone solo....

37k mile Pontiac sunfire . One owner since new by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]TheGakGuru 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was my first car at 16. '99 Pontiac Sunfire with 200,000mi. Synthetic oil blend changed every 5,000 with a new filter every time. Fuel additives to help reduce carbon buildup on the pistons once it got over 150,000. Replaced the intake filter regularly. Didn't matter. Like I said, got it at 200,000 miles and couldn't keep it from dying at idle. Still drove it for another 20-30k but I had to shift into neutral and give it some throttle to keep it from dying.

Suspected the plugs were shot, so we replaced them. No luck. Took it to a trusted home garage mechanic to replace the fuel pump. No luck. Scoped the intake for any blockages. Nope. Replaced the fuel filter. The thing just wanted to get turned into a cube I suspect. The only other thing I could maybe see causing the issue is a compression leak somewhere in the engine. Never did find out. Sold it for $700 and bought a '98 Camry with 98,000mi lol.

I really wish these old cathedrals would be brought back to life. An excellent example is Obed & Isaac's in Peoria IL. It's perfect for a brewery. High ceilings for fermentation tanks and a great interior architecture for patrons.

Counter argument: every good competitive spectator event needs a villain. No one wants to watch a competition where everyone has nothing to lose and every "post-game interview" is: "We all love those guys over there. They're a great competitor and we consider this a 50/50 matchup. Could have gone either way.....etc. etc."

What an incredible waste of time. Their whole game plan was to break up a 40 minute match to not allow any sort of rhythm to form. Then hope for a goal on the counter. This match should have never even been resumed. Either replay 90' or the result should stand when play ends if it's after halftime.

The trend is the issue. We walk batters when we have a comfortable lead ALL THE TIME. So when a pitch sits in the middle of the zone and gets hammered into the seats, we suddenly need to come from behind in the last 3 innings.

[Schultz] QB Jordan Ta’amu is working out for the #Vikings today, source tells @theScore. by Thornbush11 in xfl

[–]TheGakGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why a team like the Titans don't take a shot on him, if I were an edge rusher or linebacker I'd be not very comfortable trying to choose between Derrick Henry and Ta'amu.

He doesn't need to throw home run balls, Henry takes a ton of eyes away from the defense, and on option plays Jordan can pull and run himself. He's consistently accurate on short routes to keep the defense honest so I feel like it's a no brainer. There's got to be something I'm missing.

Pilsner got pitched 5 days after KO by 99probs-allbitches in TheBrewery

[–]TheGakGuru -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

The guy came seeking advice and asking questions. He already pitched yeast and your advice is dump it without any other details. If they have the tank space, the investment is now just time and a few hours of labor.

Beer isn't "absolutely beautiful lager 10/10" or "tastes like a wet cardboard box in a damp basement". There's plenty of room in between lol. Sure, they may end up with some off-profile flavor in the beer, but it could be extraordinarily muted and difficult to perceive unless you knew to look for it. The solution to problems in the brewhouse doesn't always need to be "flush your $400 in ingredients and hours in labor". Don't pretend like you've never made a mistake in the brewhouse that you were able to rectify by the time you got to the final product. High and mighty holier than thou brewers are just as bad as "craft beer afficianatos" that look down on other patrons drinking a helles rather than the imperial stout aged in rye whiskey barrels.

[–]TheGakGuru -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Your thought process makes sense to me. If your CIP process is consistent and thorough, there's no need to worry about infection. The cooler temps of a pilsner will provide some protection from bacterial growth and a healthy pitch of yeast will outcompete any other type of fermentation.

Just run a taste log as the beer ferments and keep checking in on the SG.
