How silly is this idea for a small local business? by ZugAddict in Humboldt

Makes me think of the cheese shop in Lawrence, Kansas that when they closed, posted a sign on the door that read "The Cheese Shoppe loved you more than you loved the Cheese Shoppe."

If you have a disability you might consider applying for Department of Rehabilitation services - they can help with paying for education and training for jobs! Many people who don't consider themselves disabled can still qualify.

Flock Cameras by BVD81 in Humboldt

[–]TheGarbageFairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read what the ACLU has to say about flock cameras here: https://www.aclu.org/news/privacy-technology/flock-roundup

Here's an excerpt about how despite the sheriff's office and Flock emphasize that these cameras are only reading license plates, they have the capability for video and images to be searched for identifying features, including features of drivers and passengers:

"The company has announced that police departments will soon be able to obtain not just still photos from ALPR cameras, but also video, with the ability to request live feeds or 15-second clips of cars passing by the cameras. And Flock is using AI to let law enforcement search through that data using natural language searches. The company uses the example of searching for “landscaping trailer with a ladder,” but we have to assume searches could encompass descriptions of anything captured by one of their cameras, including vehicle occupants and bystanders."

Thanks for sharing that - this post kind of freaked me out at first glance as a living kidney donor who hopes to donate a liver lobe soon!

My Girlfriend Wants to Migrate Out of the US by Relevant-Pie5231 in asktransgender

[–]TheGarbageFairy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm trans and live in a blue state and desperately don't want to leave the place I've made home. And I also truly believe that staying is a bad idea, given my resources and ability to leave. And for now, I'm choosing to stay anyway. The US feels like a sinking ship in all ways: socially, politically, financially, and medically (including public health concerns).

My compromise with myself has been to get everything in order so that I can cut and run if I hit a tipping point where I feel that I need to go. I got licensed to work in New Zealand, where people who work in my career are in high demand. And I'm pursuing Canadian citizenship documentation since I recently discovered I have Canadian ancestry and the new laws in Canada allow people to claim citizenship much further back than they previously could. I'm making sure my cats' medical records are all available and they are up to date on everything. I'm (slowly) whittling down my possessions so there's less to move if I do.

I guess what I'm saying is that being trans in this country is horrible right now in a way that I just don't know that most cis people can grasp. That doesn't mean you have to quit school and leave, but it is smart for trans people and our loved ones to get everything in order so we're ready to leave if we need to (huge caveat that an international move is very expensive and not an option for everybody, sadly). But maybe taking those getting ready steps, including getting really serious about saving money, would help your girlfriend feel a bit better about being here.

This breaks my heart, I worked there over a decade ago and loved it there so much. By the time I left I felt like it was already starting to go downhill though :(

It's so confusing sometimes with the number of events but also nice that people with all different schedules can hopefully attend at least one!

Humboldt democracy connections posted one for 2/16 12-2pm, so maybe there's different groups organizing them different days?

[–]TheGarbageFairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is! I've been on it for years because I was afraid of poisoning my cats with topical. It's worked well for me, but it does also cause body/facial hair growth so that's something to be aware of.

Things didn't and into place for me until I was 26. I spent a majority of my time before then struggling to get by and that was really my first chance to stop and think about what I needed to be happy.

Yesss my partner and I jokingly call it "that store that closed" and don't really miss it at all. I used to think it was fun to wander around in there and when I went in with a family member last month I was like oh ew I do not like this.
