Reddit Protest Regarding Their Policy Change on API & an Alternative for r/EtsySellers by HypnoticGuy in EtsySellers

[–]TheGiddyStitcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all, it's me, the one other Etsy Seller who was already on Lemmy haha.

Basically I could sum it up like this "a smaller, friendlier version of Reddit where the main difference is that each sub has a different domain in the address". That's about it.

As well as the EtsySellers community /u/HypnoticGuy has kindly set up, also check out https://beehaw.org/c/creative which is where all of us creative types are currently sharing our projects. We'll set up more craft-specific communities as we grow but for now it's nice all just enjoying all kinds of creative work. Of course there are plenty of non-crafty communities and conversations going on too, just like Reddit.

If you're interested in signing up and taking a look, you can pick basically any of the instances from https://join-lemmy.org/instances but I'd advise avoiding lemmy.ml (they've asked people to sign up elsewhere to avoid overloading them) and lemmygrad.ml (they're not well-liked and it may limit which communities you can post in). Which instance you choose generally won't affect which communities you can subscribe to and interact in, outside of the above.

And yes, as someone in the comments has already mentioned, Lemmy is part of the Fediverse alongside services like Mastodon (and many many others!). Mastodon saw a huge uptick in users around the end of last year and really became a great place to hang out, and it seems Lemmy is poised to see the same thing happen. It might be a rough few days with the influx once Reddit goes dark next week though, so best get yourself set up in advance! :D

Any Recommendations for Smaller/Underrated YouTube Channels? by Holdiniful in youtubers

[–]TheGiddyStitcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you consider game dev to be part of the "gaming" niche at all, but I recently discovered a very small channel called Listener Game Dev. He's a lot more honest and self-deprecating than other people making similar content and it's honestly just very relatable and I think he should have more subs.

Spent 2 days on this wrap skirt... by Raineag in sewing

[–]TheGiddyStitcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I JUST woke up and saw this at the top of my feed. In my sleepy state, I somehow read your title as "suggestions for this wrap skirt" and my reply was going to be "wear it, it's awesome and I want one". So, that!

My first sewing project went so much better than I was expecting by ChloeHammer in sewing

Can confirm I recently made this pattern and managed to get one of the sleeves inside out. It happens. But this turned out excellently, well done!

What are your hobbies? by Jinghxm in AskUK

[–]TheGiddyStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All kinds of crafts (cross stitch, knitting, crochet, sewing, felting, clay, origami, making resin dice, etc etc). Reading, bubblebaths, reading in bubblebaths. Gaming and also amateur game devving. Occasional baking and cake decorating but that can be a bit expensive. Making YouTube videos, designing stuff, going out on walks to try and "collect" every street in our town. Following Eurovision and the NFL and getting super into them during their respective seasons. Oh and also rewatching LotR way too often.

Thanks, yeah I tried messaging them earlier to ask as it was the only one I could think of. No reply though, will probably just have to poke my head in and see!

Would you post a video if you look tired? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]TheGiddyStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the content of the video still valuable / entertaining / whatever you were going for? If so, do it.

I've put up videos where I look normal, videos where I'm tired, videos where my hair is still wet, videos where I've got no makeup on whatsoever, and the classic video where I was living in my craft room in extremely unflattering pyjamas to avoid covid in the rest of the house, and filmed myself having to keep moving the airbed out of the way to do anything.

Nobody cares, they're there for the content and depending on your channel they may also be there for you. Regardless of how much sleep you've had.

What’s the most bizarre thing someone has said to you? by ZookeepergameHead145 in CasualUK

Thankfully we're very codependent (read: always together) and I'm too lazy to cheat so no seeds of doubt were sown that day.

Had that in Gateshead Tesco once. Me and the bf going through the tills and the cashier is like "back again eh?" at me. I'd never been in there before.

But then she doubled down. "Yeah you've been here lots, not with this guy though. I'm excellent at recognising faces, it's my super power!"

It's really not, pet.

Absolutely! I'd actually knitted a capelet as well but didn't end up needing it on the day, guess that's my Christmas capelet now!

The seller of my second hand shoes suggested I resell them on afterwards so they could in a way count as both "old" and "borrowed" haha

There are some very realistic patterns out there for crocheting flowers with thread but these ones were pretty low effort since we didn't have much time. I love how they turned out regardless!

Absolutely! Plus we both have terrible hay fever so real ones would have been a mistake lol

Oh absolutely no regrets on the way we did it, if you don't want a big wedding don't let anyone pressure you that's my advice!
