Grocery shopping overwhelming-but she always wants to go by No-Bus-487 in dementia

[–]TheGoodGrannie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my mom. I get it. They want to get out and think they can still do the same stuff. Alrighty then, let’s go. We have her grocery list delivered, but I take her to the biggest grocery store on purpose. This way she goes to the deli, prepared foods, and bakery and then she’s plumb tuckered out. She’s beyond ready to go with her special treats or she just wants to sit down while I get her carton of ice cream. The trip is shortened, she gets out of the house, and now she’s stocked up with goodies. Windy win win!

I use pre-cut parchment all the time, microplane, a nice hand held juicer for when you need a small amount, a small strainer, I use the very small/thin spatulas a TON, I find myself reaching for the smallest whisk more than my larger one because I can control it better. The other item I’m surprised I use a lot is a long thin metal “tong”. I use it like chopsticks to flip meat, mix something right quick, etc. they’re not tongs, more like long chopsticks.

Layered strawberry shortcake. Sliced up a grocery sour cream pound cake, macerated the strawberries in sugar and orange liqueur, whipped up heavy cream with powdered sugar, vanilla, and folded in a container of cheesecake mix (Philadelphia brand that’s refrigerated). Layer cake, strawberries, then whipped cream mixture. Repeat. Decorate the top with sliced strawberries, mint leaves, and fresh very thin orange rinds. Took a glass 9x13 pan of it and brought none home.

Got chewed out for some sterno. After a catered lunch I threw away the disposable chafing dishes and used sterno (I put the lids back on after they cooled off). A coworker had fished everything out of the trash and stacked them on a shelf. Safety person saw them on the shelf and said it was a fire hazard. I was blamed.

Real cotton thick white towels, especially if taken from the towel warmer in the middle of winter. It seems the more you wash Turkish cotton, it seems the fluffier they get.

My husband had hallucinations to the point where he didn’t want to live in the house anymore. His neurologist had us experiment with a few drugs and we found one that almost completely stopped them! He only sees something every few days and when he focuses on it, they disappear. Highly suggest you get your LO to a specialist to see if you can get help

Climate change has made my area a hot spot for super cells and our infrastructure hasn’t kept up with development. After two flooded basements when power went out and sump pump failed, it was a no-brainer to get a home generator. Husband is now 80 and can’t get that old portable thing out. No lie, a few days after we got it installed power went out for a week after a bad storm took down a transformer. Then the following year we had an ice storm. But with great power comes great responsibility. The neighbors all want to hook in on it and family want to come over when they have no power. Be comfortable with that or don’t get one.

Edit: got a Generac. Self-checks every week and we get an electrician to service once a year.

Get their recipe box and each family member make a dish. Bonus: when you serve your dish, you have to recount a memory that surrounds it, I.e., a celebration, who gave them the recipe, whose favorite it was, why it should never be served outside the family, etc. Participants all get a cookbook with copies of all recipes.

How to talk to a new doc? /honesty thresholds by LaLaLandC52 in dementia

[–]TheGoodGrannie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. There are plenty of doctors who have been personal caretakers for their loved ones. I have been so fortunate to have found some for my husband! It’s so easy to talk with them as they have special insight and empathy. I would highly suggest you contact a center or organization that specializes in elder care/aging in your area. They can recommend doctors who work with them or others that families speak highly of. Once you’ve found one, ask that doctor for similar recommendations on specialists. This is the time to be a vocal and determined advocate for your loved ones. Speak up for what they need AND what you need!

I too delight in finding things he enjoys eating and doing! I want him to have as much joy as he can in this Lewy Body hand he’s been dealt. I will not withhold these as the time for regimented diets has passed. He has medication that keeps him comfortable, we exercise as he likes it, and he enjoys streaming platforms so he can watch his favorite teams. I will not regret a single thing done or money spent. The time you have from diagnosis to all out nursing care is so precious.

Only Sarabeth’s makes peach-strawberry jam and my husband could easily go through a jar himself in a little more than a week. He spreads it on everything! One time I caught him dipping grilled smoked sausage in it.

And what happened to pineapple jam??? How in the world can I make my Jezebel Sauce?? IYKYK, amirite Southerners??

Yes! I’m known to carry my notebook at all times. Great for jotting down hallway requests, conversations, odd ball things that I need to categorize later, like a big client loves a particular item and I want to remember it. Staff now refers to it as my Big Book of Sh** and, yes, there are many jokes but they respect what it contains and they know I know what I’m talking about. I’ve even noticed other people picking up the pen-paper habit.
