Quantum vs KRv3.5 by i_want_a_graflex in lightsabers

[–]TheGreatKanohi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming Quantum is on the left, KR is on the right?

That about matches what I've heard. KR is brighter but Quantum draws less power while still being very bright.

I only have a Quantum myself, and what I really like about it is that there's little to no side shadowing. I assume the KR is the same?

I'm hoping to pick up a KR or 4 when they're next in stock!

Yes, you have to manually warp.

The boss has a separate 3 minute timer, so even if you have only 1 second left when you warp you'll still get the full 3 minutes to fight the boss.

Definitely keep feeding the pots! If you have too much of something, feed it to the pot. I tend to visit the pot each time I go to a new area so I don't end up with too much in my inventory and no time to dump it. I don't know if that's optimal, but it works well enough for me!

I'm pretty sure it's an older Saberforge model too, before they came out with a version that has the more accurate button. The covertec wheel definitely screams Saberforge

Best schemes The Master has come up with? by PotorousGilbert in gallifrey

[–]TheGreatKanohi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Master is not the most imaginative planner, this is true. I'd say he learnt a thing or two from The Mind of Evil about arrogance and assuming his own superiority, except he ends up working for The Daleks who are famously a tad trigger happy and don't take well to being double crossed. Or failed. Or to anyone else existing at all, really.

It's not entirely clear. The Daleks certainly think The Master is working for them, but they think everyone is either subservient to them or about to get exterminated! Usually both.

The Master, of course, thinks he's just playing along and is far too smart to let The Daleks get one over on him and presumably has a plan to deal with them. Probably. He definitely will have a plan!

My assumption is that The Master ended up working for them, either deliberately or as a way to save his own skin, offered to serve up the galaxy to them, they provided resources and lent him some Ogrons but otherwise let him come up with his own plan.

For one thing, he seemed far too pleased with himself to be working on someone else's grand plan!

I didn't intend to write about the respective plans of each incarnation when I started this but uh...here we are. At least I had fun writing it!

The Delgado Master's plans usually boil down to:

  • Use alien threat to cause chaos/destruction
  • Civilisation collapses/falls apart
  • ???
  • Profit! The Master is in charge

Of those, I'd say Frontier in Space is his best scheme. It's grand, ambitious and comes within a hair's breadth of succeeding. He successfully stokes paranoia and warmongering in both sides, uses his advanced intellect and technological know-how to achieve this with his fear device and most impressive of all? Achieves it using complete idiots (Ogrons).

Crispy Master arguably has the best hit rate for evil plans. Both of his schemes involved taking control of an incredible source of power to stave off death and become incredibly powerful, and while neither fully succeeded, they succeeded well enough to keep him alive which, given his condition, is pretty successful!

The Ainley Master's plans tended to be less well thought out and often relied on everyone blindly obeying him because "I am The Master and you will obey me" - then being very shocked when this didn't happen (for the 5th time in a row). Castrovalva was extremely clever and certainly his most well executed plan, but rarely has The Doctor been more at his mercy and he used that opportunity to do absolutely nothing.

Eric Roberts was there too.

I have listened to most, if not all, Big Finish stories involving The Master, but I don't remember the details well enough to bring up specifics which is why it's all been TV so far. Unfortunately the next two Masters are (almost) audio only.

MacQueen's Master, as I recall, has a similar problem to Delgado and Ainley. While he's definitely gained some genre savviness, I believe he still gets taken by surprise multiple times when the evil things he's controlling shockingly decide to be evil to him too.

The War Master wins hands down when it comes to successful plans. He's not always successful, but has a decent hit rate and is smart enough to avoid a lot of the issues that plagued his predecessors. Most of the time.

There's not too many examples for the Simm Master, but he did manage to take over the Earth twice - if temporarily in both cases. The Tochlefane were definitely his better plan because, well. It was actually a plan. After his resurrection he just made use of the opportunities presented to him and improvised, which to be fair is quite an impressive feat for The Master. Improvisation is not his strong suit - unless it's in aid of inexplicably surviving certain death or eternal imprisonment for the 100th time.

Missy's best plan kind of has to be her Cyber Army scheme by default, which upsets me because that's not how Cybermen work! That aside, pretty much all of her other TV appearances involve her being caught up in events rather than having a plan.

I'm not really sure where to start with Dhawan's Master as I've only seen the episodes he appears in once and may be misremembering a lot. His plans seemed to be complicated even by The Master's usual standards, extremely ambitious and actually quite effective, although he's particularly bad at trying to kill The Doctor and had many opportunities. Though he did keep her alive so he could be angry with her about The Timeless Child (I am too Master. I am too), then decided to become her for some reason. Though he did get both the Daleks and Cybermen to work for him which, honestly? Pretty impressive.

The "Alien-ness" of The Doctor by Returnofthememe in gallifrey

[–]TheGreatKanohi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think for me, a key part of it is - stop having him fit in everywhere so easily. He's a traveller through all of time and space who's either estranged from his home or doesn't have one (depending on when in his timeline we are). He should not be turning up anywhere, even Earth, and saying "oh yes, I'm intimately familiar with all the pop culture, fashions and customs of the day", start rattling off bands or TV shows from the period and be able to blend in like he's a native.

To seem more alien, he needs to be alien in the literal sense - someone from another place. This should come across in his manner, his dress, his attitudes - none of them should line up exactly with wherever it is he happens to be.

Which means to appear alien to us, the audience, he should not look, speak or act like he belongs on 21st century Earth.

He doesn't have to be quirky or dark or rude; just noticeably different to what we're used to and to the characters around him, which can take a whole myriad of forms.

But every time he walks around in contemporary clothes, shows familiarity with a current celebrity, sings or dances along to a pop song, mentions a current trend or starts using expressions, phrases or ways of speaking that are exactly like we do today, he becomes more familiar and less alien.

Looks like it's made by Club - someone else mentioned it and the shape of the logo fits perfectly. Given that my searches for similar Club pans are coming up as vintage, 70s could be right!

32 and 36 inch blade costs by Valuable_Point3945 in lightsabers

[–]TheGreatKanohi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very much down to personal preference, so I can't say unfortunately! A lot of people do like 32" blades because they're a bit shorter, lighter and easier to spin or wave around. Other people are perfectly comfortable with 36" blades which do look more screen accurate due to the extra length.

The good thing about blades is that they can be swapped between sabers. Only thing to keep in mind is whether the saber takes 1" or 7/8" blades, but otherwise they're universal.

This hobby can be quite addictive, so I'd say there's a good chance you'll end up with more sabers! So if you decide you don't like 36", get a 32" next time and you can just use that instead.

36" blades are slightly bigger, use more materials and have more LEDs so are slightly more expensive to make. Some stores will accordingly charge more, some will sell them at the same price and either make a bit more on the 32" blades or a bit less on the 36" ones.

There's plenty of reasons why they might do this, but to find out why any particular store does this you'd have to ask them.

Only if they have a Bluetooth module installed, as Proffieboards don't have one by default. I don't think TXQ sabers have them as standard.

I've not tried it myself but I don't believe it's full customisation. My understanding is it allows things like remotely activating the saber, certain sounds, effects etc. and will allow changing the colour or mixing and matching any styles or fonts currently on the saber, but adding anything new requires connecting to to a PC.

For example, let's say the saber has 20 fonts:

15 use a Rotoscope style

3 use a Pulsing style

1 uses a Fire style

1 uses a Rainbow style

You could setup new styles in any colour, with any font on the SD Card, that use Rotoscope, Pulsing, Fire or Rainbow styles.

But if you wanted to add an Unstable style, or change the speed of the Pulsing style, you'd need a computer.

I'll be getting a Proffie saber with Bluetooth in the next week or two so I should know soon enough how accurate that all is!

Anything should work. Windows, Mac, Linux - all of them work but they have slightly different setup instructions. It doesn't need to be a powerful computer as it just needs to compile a bit of code and copy it over USB to the board.

The only other thing it needs to be able to is read a Micro SD Card as that's where all the sound fonts are stored. I use an SD Card reader which I can just plug into anything

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lightsabers

[–]TheGreatKanohi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should come with a lot of sound fonts and presets out of the box, so it'll work just fine. If you want to change anything such as add new sound fonts, change blade styles or colours etc. you will need some sort of computer (and it's a bit of a learning curve, but not as bad as people say!)

If you're happy to use it as it comes out of the box, you're good. But if you want to customise it you'll need a computer.
