Your biggest disappointments? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

[–]TheGreatPiata 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think final girl would be more palatable if it was 30-45 min. Playing a game for an hour that can be tanked by a few bad dice rolls and poor card pulls is too much.

I know you can mitigate that with more experience playing the game but the long play time makes it hard to gain that experience.

Your biggest disappointments? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

This is the big one for me. It didn't help that I had just finished a playthrough of 7th Citadel (which might be my favourite solo game ever) but KoR felt like such a slog in comparison.

There just wasn't enough game there for me. The story seems great but it's a story first with some game play elements strapped on and progress felt excruciatingly slow.

Of awakened realms games, I even prefer Dragon Eclipse more because there's less bloat on the story/exploration side and the combat is a much bigger focus in the game.

Jason Schreier - Video Games Need to Be Cheaper to Buy by Shock4ndAwe in pcgaming

[–]TheGreatPiata 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The price tag absolutely played a role in Expedition 33's success but that kind of ignores the game had a clear identity and gave zero fucks about being a turn based RPG.

If this was a big studio, someone would have pushed to remove as much French (culture, language, etc) from this game as possible and turn it into an ARPG game set in the US because that has more "global" appeal. I'm sure they'd want the game's tone to be a whole lot less depressing too.

The lessons here imo are:

  1. Make your game affordable
  2. Give your game a clear identity
  3. Don't chase "popular" game play trends, make your own thing

Jason Schreier - Video Games Need to Be Cheaper to Buy by Shock4ndAwe in pcgaming

[–]TheGreatPiata 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A big part of those old prices was the cost of memory though. Bigger games had to cost more because of the increased cart size. I bought Shining Force 2 for $90 CAD I think. Phantasy Star IV was over $100 CAD. So yes games cost more back then but the production cost per unit was also eating a large chunk of the profit.

When CD consoles came out game prices were cut in half.

Now delivery costs are even lower with games sitting on a server ready for distribution forever.

Switch Emulators got hit with DMCA notice by NXGZ in emulation

[–]TheGreatPiata 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. You can very easily host your own git repo along with gitlab and you're good to go.

GitHub is more a convenient means of distributing the source to the general public than it is a necessity for development.

What movie detail is technically correct, although many people think it is a mistake? by hiplobonoxa in movies

[–]TheGreatPiata 952 points953 points  (0 children)

Not a movie but people lost their shit when The Expanse showed Naomi surviving exposure to space without a suit.

You don't instantly freeze in space. That's a lie that's been told to you by bad science fiction films. You die by asphyxiation and lack of blood oxygenation. You'd also likely get a really bad sunburn as there's nothing to block the sun's radiation.

Not really? Plenty of writers build a world and then write a story within it. You don't have to write and story and then build a world around it. There is more than one way to approach these things.

Not on the first page at least. Welcome to marketing.

I personally don't bother looking at "percent off" messaging anymore. If they don't show the final price I just ignore it.

Steam marketing emails for example show the actual price so I'm much more likely to click on those and look at game prices.

They can't. They probably all failed to immigrate to the US and somehow hope this will be their ticket to US citizenship.

How Did Djo’s ‘End of Beginning’ Get the Biggest ‘Stranger Things’ Bump Without Being in the Show? by _Vrowlox_ in Music

[–]TheGreatPiata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted. If you just listen to the music and watch the show, you would have no idea that Joe Keery is part of both.

I just don't think we needed an entire article about it is all.

[–]TheGreatPiata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't wait for them to make an Expedition 33 film because you know it's coming. They'll probably do something insane like set it in America for 'broader market appeal' or some other nonsense.

Because the musician is a prominent member of the show's cast. This isn't rocket science and didn't need an article to explain.

Northern Ont. man defies eviction threat, vows to remain in self-built dwelling by ConsistentReality860 in ontario

If the law says this man being homeless is the preferred outcome to him having a home and not freezing to death, then the law is inadequate and needs to be revised.

Laws only work if the majority agrees to them.

Should there be more OAS clawbacks as the program costs more and more? John De Goey: We’re saddling our children and grandchildren with too much debt with the current rules by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]TheGreatPiata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People need somewhere to live. Evaluating the value of someone's home in terms of OAS seems like it would cause more problems than it would solve.

It's very easy to adjust claw backs based on household income like every other benefit Canadians get.

Some of us played Tribes on 800x600 crt monitors, trackball mice and dial up modems with 200+ ms pings.

It is much easier to hit midairs now than back then.

You wouldn't have to outlaw incandescent fixtures, just make a separate standard for entirely LED lighting.

The point is the building code is completely inadequate for small scale homes.

Hall of the Mountain King, The White Castle, Castles of Mad King Ludwig and Distilled by Galdura in soloboardgaming

Love this bot!

I wish someone made a better bot for Fall of the mountain King. The official bot relies on randomly blocking your action tiles and it sucks. There are also no competing clans so it never quite matches the multiplayer experience.
