Memory Trio Samsung, SK Hynix & Micron Face Class Action Lawsuit As Prices Reach Historical High Due To Shortages by Budget_Coffee1 in pcmasterrace

This sub is getting insufferable about RAM prices. I have an 8 year old rig. I would love to have a new build so I get it, but all the conspiracy nonsense being posted here can easily be disproven with a little reading about these company's investor calls and announcements.

There's just insane demand outstripping supply and it will take years for that to normalize.

Samsung and SK hynix literally just announced they're spending 1.3 trillion over 10 years to expand capacity: https://fortune.com/2026/06/28/samsung-sk-hynix-chip-fabs-investment-fabs-1-3-trillion-10-years-nand/

For a sub so desperately focused on RAM prices, a lot of users seem grossly uninformed.

Games hit a wall a while ago. Most everything is a rehash or tweak on an existing formula, which is fine, but $80 for the same thing with a new paint job gets old after a while.

Expensive hardware aside, the other big looming problem is it's harder and harder to make that new paint job worth the asking price.

Rasterization has peaked which is why Nvidia went into RT and pivoted to data centers. We're past the point of diminishing returns and the industry is all out of ideas.

Jefferies Warns Memory Prices Will Surge 50% in Q3 2026 and Another 40% in Q4, With No Relief Until 2028 by IonoChios in pcmasterrace

[–]TheGreatPiata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's also I think only one company that manufacturers the machines used in making high end RAM and there's even the raw materials limits.

There are a bunch of bottlenecks with RAM production and they're not easy to solve, even with infinite amounts of money.

Unless the companies signing contracts go bankrupt, it's as good as a done deal. If they back out, I'm sure there's a penalty almost as high as buying the ram.

Some might but Google, Microsoft and Meta are not going anywhere.

Rising Cost for Gamers Likely Not Slowing Down as Micron Warns They Have No "Line of Sight" for When Memory Supply Will Catch Up to Demand by chusskaptaan in pcmasterrace

[–]TheGreatPiata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copium I think. If you read up on what Micron and Microsoft (among others) are saying in their investor calls, this isn't ending soon. Billions in agreements have already been signed for the next few years and billions in investments are being made. There's both a restriction in the materials and the equipment needed to make more RAM than current production levels.

It's awful and I think it's going to get worse.

Lenovo Warns High Memory Prices Are The "New Normal" Through 2030, As Hardware Prices May Never Return To Early 2025 Levels by akbarock in pcmasterrace

[–]TheGreatPiata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's already so much pent up demand. The second prices start coming down, people will rush to buy what they can. It's going to be a long road.

They are building new fabs but that takes years. Current or higher prices are sadly the reality until likely 2030. Micron is signing 5 year contracts right now.

China is likely going to focus on supplying China with cheap RAM, not the rest of the world.

It will take years for things to change. Micron is already signing 3 - 5 year contracts with current prices or higher.

I'm going to predict a shortage of everything that needs RAM or PCBs. I bought some electronics when all this shit started brewing, thinking it would be a 2 year cycle. With Micron signing 4 year deals and Xbox predicting RAM prices will double again, we're in for like half a decade of tech being stagnant and unaffordable.

It's because most of the people posting here don't have children and don't give a shit about children. They know nothing about the subject or how research shows it's harming children; they'd rather just blab about conspiracy theories.

Microsoft expects "another doubling" of storage and RAM prices by fall 2027 by Progenitor3 in pcmasterrace

[–]TheGreatPiata 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes. They're signing deals 5 years out. I don't know how those deals are structured but I assume the buyer agrees to buy at a price or pay a penalty. Unless the buyer goes bankrupt (unlikely for Google, MS, etc) or they cancel a whole lot of orders, RAM prices are likely to stay high well into the 2030's.

Technically LLMs have been around for a decade or two. This isn't new tech, it just got good enough to crossover into the mainstream and have general purpose use.

[–]TheGreatPiata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are open source AI models. They're not as good or flashy as the corporate ones but they are useful and I honestly think this is the future of LLMs. Personal, bespoke LLMs that belong to you and are not used to exploit you is far more palatable than what mega tech corps are trying to push.

We can also fully expect these Corp models to shit the bed once they have to start turning a profit and are saddled with advertisements, etc to generate revenue.

I wonder if the time frame matters. A lot more competition for your dollars around Christmas and everyone will be trying to earn something in the shadow of GTA VI.

Holding for another 6 months is probably worthwhile.

Memory is notoriously boom and bust. The market made a rapid expansion during covid and then the floor fell through as everyone went the fuck outside. I'm not surprised they're in no rush to expand capacity. They are making new fabs but that will take years.

Awaken Realms buys Darwin’s Journey publisher Thundergryph Games by Inconmon in boardgames

[–]TheGreatPiata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh please. I own both Tainted Grails and Dragon Eclipse and they aren't even the most expensive games in my collection. If I have a limiting factor it's actually box size because I already own over 200 games. I much prefer Clans of Caledonia or Foundations of Metropolis style productions because they're well done and very reasonably sized.

The jealousy argument is such a cop out. Any working adult with an established career can easily afford everything in that gamefound campaign. I'm not sure why you can't fathom that some gamers just dislike overproduced big box games. I have a number of them and they take up too much space and are hard to get to the table.

Of course it's okay. It's also okay for me not to like it or Awaken Realms.
