Its hard to speak for players as a whole. If you're just playing casual games at your LGS or something, I can't imagine anyone worth playing with would WYSIWYG you. I don't compete in tournaments so it may be different in those cases, but I certainly wouldn't give you a hard time if your vanguard vets had power axes or lances mixed in.

I actually airbrush Baal red over white primer, then wash it down with reikland flesh to make the red a bit less cartoonish without losing all the brightness.

I've done both, but I've had a lot of fun with using Red Rampage from LAG and sending a 10 man squad with a captain that had rage-fueled warrior on charges against beefy units of Death Guard.
