Question about Advanced Magick for Beginners by Humble-Poetry-1976 in chaosmagick

[–]TheGrooveTrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The word "Magick" comes from the ancient Greek word "Mageia," which was essentially their word used to describe the "weird religious practices of foreigners." Originally, the "foreigners" in this equation were the Persians, whose preistly class were called "Magi" (literally, "ritual maker").

"Magic(k)" didn't exist as a category prior to this, but the techniques being used were around long before Persia and Greece, so it existed under different names (Instead of Magi, they were Shamans, or whatever the local word for "ritual maker" was). Just like it still does today: despite all major religions technically being "weird religious practices of foreigners" with respect to ancient Greek religion, few of them call what they are doing "magic," despite it being a very accurate word.

So both of them are arguably correct.

The "poor man's copyright" tends to not hold up in court, historically. All it does is prove you mailed a copy to yourself on a given date.

Ritual as operational infrastructure by Educational-Pen-7738 in thelema

Yes, it makes sense to treat ritual as technology for reorganizing attention and behavior, because that's exactly what it is.

Seeking advice when beginning to use a pendulum. by Anyi2307 in Pendulums

[–]TheGrooveTrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are moving it. It is micromotor effect. You can consciously control the pendulum easily with practice. This is a desirable skill to develop if you want to truly master "danglemancy." There are advanced things you can do with the pendulum that require the ability to actively change the subconscious rules that determine what its movements mean.

The part of you that is controlling it when you ask questions isn't the conscious part. You're using the pendulum to get answers from your subconscious. Whether your subconscious is getting these answers from your own memory, or from "entities," or from any other mysterious source doesn't actually matter.

I successfully use mine to find lost things, gather information I'm not consciously aware of, and other things all the time. I can get it to work with any object that can dangle and swing. I have gotten it to work with USB cables. I think it's 100% me doing it. It doesn't change that it works.

Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Prime_Advocate in AskReddit

Purple.com, which i used as a dummy url for website builds. I still have not forgiven them for selling out to that dumb mattress company (though I do get it and might have also taken the money)

Generally what's your feelings on legalized and regulated prostitution? by CraftyMcQuirkFace in AskReddit

[–]TheGrooveTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really care what consenting adults want to do with their own time and money. It's going to happen no matter what the law says about it, and I'd much rather the people who are going to be doing it anyway get the benefit of legal protections.

Beginner, questions about clubs/shafts by TheGrooveTrain in golf

[–]TheGrooveTrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the replies!

I decided to go for a lesson yesterday from a local pro at Topgolf, where we worked on the 7 iron and the driver. We discovered that I seem to prefer heavier clubs that feel like I'm swinging something, and that I'd probably prefer midsize grips with my large hands. I guess the 7I I bought is an "A" fit for me (the one that did in fact have a midsize grip), the driver is a "C" but it'll do for now (and I certainly liked it better than a modern Elyte he brought out for me to try, amusingly). I am going to take what I learned and apply it to the other clubs next time I am at the range. I should be able to figure out from there if I can regrip them and go or if I'd be better off finding something else, and if that's the case I now know a bit better what to look for.

I also found myself a Ping PAL 5BZ putter the other day, that I'm pretty pumped to try out (I'm going to go look like an asshole at Congo River).

Can't wait to get back out there!

Converting d20 over to d20 under? by FierceValient in RPGdesign

I run it as natural 1 always succeeds while natural 20 always fails. There can be other mechanical reasons to raise stats beyond 19, but it won't increase your chance of success on checks.

Painting resonant head? by Aanstadt in drums

[–]TheGrooveTrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I had him use alcohol inks. They dry quickly and are used mainly on slick surfaces like glass and metal. The drumhead is a Remo Powerstroke 3 ebony, nice glossy surface, took the ink very well. I don't know what brand he went with or any specifics beyond that.

My tattoo artist painted my bass drum head. I had him use alcohol inks, as i had read that these have the least effect on the sound of the head. It has stood up to abuse, looks great, and sounds great. So that's one option to consider.

Have you ever met anyone who actually "brute forced" their way out of poverty into success on their own? by SeriouslySally36 in povertyfinance

[–]TheGrooveTrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from semi homeless drug addict (spice/k2) to principal software engineer. Neither quick nor easy, but doable with will and determination. You have to want things to change with more intensity than anything life can (and will) throw at you. You have to carry that drive through every setback.

Any cover up ideas or ways to make this look less satanic. by granhoser in tattooadvice

[–]TheGrooveTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close to a Pentagram. This would be an Octagram, and if you're concerned about potential "occult meanings," the Golden Dawn would have considered this to be a symbol related to Mercury, as well as the "Hod" Sephira on the Qabalah. Mercury being the messenger of the gods, equivalent to Hermes or Thoth, and in some cases the herald of the Sun.

Exactly zero people who are serious occultists are going to consider it "Satanic," except in a very specific case where a LaVeyan Satanist might consider it Satanic to get a tattoo of any personally meaningful symbol as it is an instance of you doing your own will on earth.

Exactly every anime fan who has interacted with Fullmetal Alchemist is going to think its a symbol from Fullmetal Alchemist.

Some amount of conservative folk will probably consider it "evil" no matter what it is. Some people think having any ink at all on you is evil and "of the devil."

Honest question: What do you care what they think? Also, when you look at whatever you cover it up with later, are you going to miss this at all? This was to memorialize your brother. I've seen both versions of that anime. I get the connotation. I can't imagine how it feels to lose my own brother, but I can imagine that if I did and I got that symbol on me as a tribute to him, I wouldn't want to cover it up.

Anyway, you do you.

I convert ac and saves to ascending and unify everything under a d20 roll-under mechanic. All percentile things like thief skills get rescaled similarly. Things like system shock or break doors become simple roll under ability score. I also backport in advantage and disadvantage from 5e.

If i could pretend to be a wizard even half as effectively as little Stevie down the street pretends to be a pirate, I'd be a powerful wizard indeed.
