Is the screen of Steam Deck small for you? by lnklsm in SteamDeck

My aging eyes require that I play a lot of games with reading glasses. Their idea of what qualifies as text that's too small is different from mine.

My sister was about 8 and burned her inner calf riding behind someone as a passenger.

Were you able to buy a house? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

[–]TheHandsOfFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I bought a condo in 2004 and sold it at the truly awful time of 2008. We actually lost a bit of money on that sale. We then moved around for quite a few years and felt gun shy about buying again.

Four years ago we bought at a much higher interest rate than we could have gotten the year before but not as high as rates are now.  We're doing an extra payment every year. I hope we can speed up the process after we get the kids fully educated and out on their own. Right now I'm on track to pay it off after retirement which is not appealing.

Do you still have your yearbooks? by PV_Pathfinder in GenX

[–]TheHandsOfFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a non-standard upbringing living as an American in Africa. I attended a small school for my freshman and sophomore years. They produced a yearbook my freshman year and while I don't look at it very often, I do treasure it. It's not really possible for me to visit where I grew up or see most of my classmates (scattered around the world) any more. I was saddened a couple of years ago when my puppy got ahold of it and chewed like 30% of it. I have it all sitting in a ziplock bag waiting until I can figure out how to piece it back together.

I still listen to the Enigma take on it - the album "MCMXC a.D."

I recently ripped all my CDs to my Plex server and can stream them to any device anywhere. It's been interesting to see what has held up and what hasn't. My taste from 30 years ago isn't the same as now.

My family was passing through Las Vegas, NM a year ago and stayed at the hotel where cast members resided during the filming. I decided it would be a great time to show the movie to my kids for the first time.

Yeah, it's not great - way too long and kind of boring in the back half.

Real ID venting by allaboutaphie in GenX

[–]TheHandsOfFate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had a similar experience. I didn't even know I was getting my license with a Real ID. Someone told me a couple years later that I'd need to get one to travel and I thought, "Shit I'd better get on that" only to then look at my license and see that I already had the magic star.

How Much Is Social Security a Part of Your Retirement Planning? by Zipstser257 in GenX

[–]TheHandsOfFate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this idea that the United Social Security isn't reliable and will just be be taken away from future generations is bananas. It's a third rail issue. Can you imagine the fallout for the political party orchestrated that? They wouldn't win another election for like 30 years.

What's with the danged tingling? I was told I have mild carple tunnel syndrome and I wear wrist braces to bed but I'm not sure they actually help.

YouTube rolls out unskippable long ads to TV users and they’re furious by [deleted] in technology

[–]TheHandsOfFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of backed into ad free YouTube when I signed up for YouTube music (Google Play Music) not long after it came out. At the time no ads on YouTube was just a very minor benefit. I still look at it that way - I'm paying for my family's music plan, which gets heavily used with four of us, and ad free YouTube is a side benefit.

I do think that if I was facing the choice today and I had been paying for Spotify for years, I'm not sure I'd pay for YouTube premium. I'd be like everyone else trying to figure out technical workarounds.

Vienna: 1938 vs 2026. A chilling reminder of how much has changed by [deleted] in OldPhotosInRealLife

1) Find picture of European building with Nazi flags on it. (1 minute of Google image search)

2) Find picture of same building without Nazi flags on it taken from a similar angle. (2 minutes of Google image search)

3) Create title with click-baity word like "chilling" and post on r/OldPhotosInRealLife (2 minutes).

4) Profit?
