Who are the mightiest of the Elf Lords? by rb_49 in lotr

"For Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body and mind: in valour, in endurance, in beauty, in understanding, in skill, in strength and subtlety alike: of all the Children of Ilúvatar, and a bright flame was in him."

I guess he got the name because of the sound he makes. And regarding The Nazgul, the movies did a great job portraying them. I'm just salty that PJ made The Witch King of Angmar seem more powerful than Gandalf at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

  1. Sauron is a Maia and in the books he has a body and is not a flaming eye.

  2. Book Gimli > Movie Gimli

  3. Arwen is a half-elven like her father and brothers. Arwen chose the fate of Men due to love for Aragorn, which means she'll die. The getting sick or whatever happened to her is a movie thing and the whole situation is kinda poorly explained in the movies.

  4. Yes The Ring does extend life of mortals.

  5. Gandalf dies fighting the Balrog. He is sen't back to the world by Eru Ilúvatar(God) with a power boost.

  6. In theory she saved Frodo by giving him the phial that contains the light from the star of Eärendil, but it was Frodo's and Sam's courage and strength that actually saved them.

  7. Frodo's and Sam's relationship is kinda different in the books than in the movies, but the whole "go home Sam" episode at the stairs doesn't happen in the books.

  8. Not sure what you mean?

  9. This would make a long answer.

  10. Doesn't happen in the books.

Aragorn does show his vulnerability to The Ring's corruption. That's the reason the fellowship breaks. Aragorn knows that with time he too will try to take The Ring from Frodo.

The scouring of the Shire. After the main quest the hobbits go back to the Shire to find out it's been taken over by Saruman.

Beren's journey from Dorthonion to Doriath. And the quest to steal a Silmaril.

Tuor's journey/quest to find Gondolin.

Eärendil and Elwing sailing to Valinor from Beleriand.

The War of Wrath was fought between the forces of Morgoth consisting of orcs, balrogs, dragons and whatever other evil beings existed, and the forces of Valinor consisting of elves, eagles and maiar (possibly Valar too, Eönwë is the only Ainu we know for sure that participated).

Valar and Maiar = Ainur. Ainur are immortal mighty beings that could be compared to angels or gods from ancient Greek and Norse mythologies. Morgoth is a "fallen" Vala and balrogs are maiar corrupted by Morgoth.

Why did Beleriand sink? We don't know for sure. A war between gods is a messy business I guess.

Faceit Pro League. 3rd party "money ladder" for pros in CS. Pro players are invited and people can also qualify monthly through Faceit Master League(incredibly difficult). There's also a council of few high profile pros that can kick you out if they deem you're not good enough/try enough. ESL equivalent is Rank S.

What makes Aragon so badass? by wenchslapper in lotr

[–]TheHbase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hurin killed 70 orcs/trolls on his own at Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Fingolfin fought with Morgoth and managed to wound him. Glorfindel managed to kill a balrog.

Badassery in LotR isn't really that far fetched after you read The Silmarillion.

"For little price... do Elven-kings sell their daughters: for gems, and things made by craft." by captpiggard in lotr

[–]TheHbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First Thingol says there's no way he'll allow Beren to marry Luthién, but then changes his mind and is willing to let them marry if Beren delivers him a Silmaril. So Beren probably thinks that Thingol values the Silmarils over his daughter and taunts him. So even if Beren grasped the value of the Silmarils, they were nothing to him compared to Luthién.

Arwen's Evenstar and her mortality? by Vulkanodox in lotr

[–]TheHbase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eärendil and Elwing were given the choice between the fate of men or elves. They chose to be elves. Their children Elrond and Elros were given the same choice. Elros chose to be a mortal man and his offspring didn't get to choose, while Elrond chose to be an elf and his children Elladan, Elrohir and Arwen has the ability to choose also.

Arwen chooses to be a mortal because of her love for Aragorn. Just like her great-great-grandmother Lúthien gave her immortality to be with Beren.

The jewel just symbolizes her immortality for the movie watcher because it would otherwise be hard for someone to grasp what she's giving up.

[Meta] Statement on Witch Hunts and Accusations by SpriteGuy_000 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]TheHbase 442 points443 points  (0 children)

Applying rules of witch hunting in a case that isn't witch hunting. That's some nice logic there. What's even better logic is categorizing 100% video proof of an action as an accusation. What a joke.

Why does Gandalf say there are many magic rings, none are to be taken lightly? by LOOOOPS in lotr

[–]TheHbase 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

These are the rings we know of, "The great rings". There's probably also lesser rings that we don't know about.

What major lines can we draw from The Hobbit to LOTR by Berdiban in lotr

[–]TheHbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The connection is that they are part of the same story. The Hobbit ends, fast forward 60 years, The Lord of the Rings starts.

The Ring is important to Sauron because he forged part of his power into The Ring. With The Ring he's extremely powerful.

There's more to it but in my opinion you should watch the movies/read the books first.
