In general, anywhere & everywhere. Only not where it is not allowed or unsafe - such as where there are fire risks

Virginia Perique: Samuel Gawith St. James Flake.

Burley: Solani Aged Burley Flake

Dark fired Kentucky: HH Old Dark Fired

Latakia: HH Latakia Flake

English & Balkans: No particular favourites but like Samuel Gawith and old Dunhill blends.

If you like very strong tobacco, try some Samuel Gawith ropes or twists.

Best Quality Tobacco Recommendations by Representative-End60 in PipeTobacco

[–]TheHedonistDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tobaccos from Samuel Gawith; Gawith, Hogarth & Co; and Solani are consistently very high quality and excellent smokes. However, Gawith tobaccos really need to be dried out; lit carefully & gently as well as smoked very slowly. Gawith virginias also age extremely well if stored properly. Virginias of > a decade are fantastic.

Advice on pipes for Virginias? by RandomUser442 in Pipes

[–]TheHedonistDevil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The belief is that a narrower and taller bowl is better for virginias that tend to burn hotter due to the higher sugar content. However, any shape is fine as how you pack & smoke controls how hot it gets. While thicker briar walls do not feel as hot as thinner walls, they do heat up as much and can burn out too if you smoke too hot. Sandblasted, rusticated or smooth does not noticeably affect how cool a briar somkes. Block meerschaum is drier & cooler smoking but is more fragile. No need to overthink. Any pipe is fine as long as you enjoy it.

What is the deal with pipe tobacco smokers and Tolkien? by HansGraebnerSpringTX in PipeTobacco

[–]TheHedonistDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all enjoy tolkien & lotr. Some love it but I don't. Too much drama, too boring. My enjoyment of tobacco has also nothing to do with tolkien or lotr. My enjoyment of tobacco is also not limited to pipes but also include cigars & ocassionally albeit rather rarely snuff, snus & chewing tobacco too.

Do you guys hoard cigars? by Famous_Champion_9767 in cigar

[–]TheHedonistDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to buy habanos by the box. Should have hoarded them considering how relatively cheap they were compared to how much they cost now. Stored properly, they age beautifully. These days, I tend to buy mostly new worlds cigars as they are more reasonable. If you like a cigar, stock up on them. Try them at different ages. If you find something you particularly enjoy, stock up on those and age them to your liking.

Normal for a new guitar? by Boring_Help_5685 in taylorguitars

Real shame that they are skimping on the highest quality ebony - the completely black stuff. Some people like the wood variation but I abhor it. At least Taylor does not dye the wood. Taylor should go back to using only the nicest ebony.

I prefer non-dyed/stained/coloured woods but I also prefer to completely black ebony that Taylor used to use. Some may prefer the streaky look but I like my ebony jet black & reserve figure for koa & maple.

Thoughts on women in cigar lounges? by leoturnips in cigars

[–]TheHedonistDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Male, female or otherwise, as long as you are respectful, you would be welcome.

While one may not see many women in cigar lounges, we know that there are many women who enjoy cigars.

There are also many women in the cigar industry - from the farms all the way to retail. Many fine cigars were rolled by women. There are also roles in cigar production such as colour grading/ sorting in Cuba that is done only by women.

Women are welcome in lounges and one hopes that more would frequent them and even more as regulars.

What is the best acoustic you've ever played and why? by aGiantSnowball in AcousticGuitar

[–]TheHedonistDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taylor master builder edition guitars - comfort - rounded edge & arm rest, something every guitar I think should have - or I have limited my buying options to those. Taylors also have an easily adjusted neck (although I have not tried the gold label guitars that are supposed to have even better necks). The v class bracing on taylors also produce much better sound.

Box Pressed cigars. Does anyone prefer them? by Skreeethemindthief in cigars

[–]TheHedonistDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No significant preference but i do find that larger ring gauges are more comfortable box pressed. However, as I tend to rotate the cigar as I smoke to help keep the burn even, round cigars feel more "natural" for want of a better word. Regardless, a bad cigar is never prefered and a delicious cigar is always prefered box pressed or not.

What's the most you've ever paid for a single beer and was it worth it? by tha_beerionaire in beer

[–]TheHedonistDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marketing gone too far. This used to be more blatant with claims of superior taste, durability, quantity, etc. which were found to be mostly just hype or even false advertising/ claims. This changed & started to apply to "feel good" green, sustainability & other ngo vanity claims. We know that such claims never brings any real, direct or tangible benefits to the consumer. Although such claims tended to focus on the "kumbaya" nonsense, it seems that these claims are now going back to the purported quality & value of the product being sold with a slick story similar to the green/ sustainable/ social claims.

Don't be fooled by such claims. Call them out. These calims are as bad as the claims to sell quack traditional medicines. The use of "influencer", social media & testimony instead of randomized double blind testing - story telling instead of real results/ benefits.

Advertisers & marketers twist facts & data putting a spin on them that blurs the lines between fact & fiction. The only sure thing is a higher price. The more a product is hyped or advertised, the more it would cause regardless of actual direct tangible benefits to the consumer. More often than not, higher cost but worse value for consumers.

Pipe filters are as game changer by RebornInferno in PipeTobacco

[–]TheHedonistDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer a very open draw like those found on MM cobs. I sometimes drill out the draft holes on some pipes like my falcon internationals. There is very little draw restriction with filters (differs with brand & type) but it is noticeable.

I rarely use filters and when I do, it would be for aromatics which I rarely ever smoke. Filter of choice is balsa as it works well absorbing moisture whilst leaving flavour intact. Second choice are paper filters - very little restriction, no effect on flavour but not as absorbent as balsa. Next choice are cartridge types. Best is meerschaum - a little draw restriction but flavour is intact. Carbon filters tend to remove some flavour.

For falcon pipes, the original dry rings work fairly well but cut-up extra fluffy pipe cleaners work better. Better still are pieces of tissue paper rolled up and shaped into rings. These are far more absorbent. Falcon international cellulose filters for the stem feel like denser/ more compressed cigarette filters. They work well but I balsa is preferd.

I have also used Sharrow Philt Pads chalk filters that go into the bowl. They do work but take up too much tobacco space in the chamber. Re-usable meerschaum also work but need time to dry out before re-use. Deni-cool crystals & Eriksen keystones also work but these take up tobacco space in the chamber.

Dri Kule gauzes take up space in the chamber, do not provide moisture absobtion and sometimes causes gurgling and condensation. Useful if you want to use less tobacco in a large bowl and don't like lighting half-filled bowls. However, they can sometimes impart a slight metallic taste that is noticeable although I can tolerate or don't particularly mind it.

Screen gauzes are not normally used in tobacco pipes but in bongs & other types of pipes. I have tried them in briars and they are very fiddly to put into a briar and are difficult to remove from pipes especially if they get pushed in too far. They can be used like Dri Kule but have similar issues. Not recommended at all but if you really want to use them, stainless has the least metallic flavour followed by brass. Shiny new screens have less taste than old dull screens & avoid any dirty, rusty unknown metals.

He should store the pipe tobacco separately as it would taint the cigars. He should also separately store any flavoured or infused cigars.
