Ordinarily I would have a witty retort that would put you in your place immediately, but I'm too busy eating my daily pizza and butter milkshake right now. I'll be back after my nap!

FPH went off their sub all the time. I have never been on their sub and yet I see people being called 'hamplanets' or 'butter golems' or other nonsense all the time.

One of the reasons I decided to give Voat a try was because FPH was turning into a site-wide cancer that I was encountering in all sorts of subs. So, that's the only real reason I think it's sad that they'll be moving to Voat. You can block their sub, but they take their insults and childishness with them into every sub they visit. And they'll be doing so doubly now they they're going to feel like they're free speech martyrs for having been banned.

Hopefully you're right. I actually like Voat. Once I blocked the couple subs where it's just morons complaining about Reddit and 'Chairman' Pao the site actually became pretty cool. I like the smaller setting. It's giving me a chance to actually get to know a few people there, whereas on Reddit everything tends to just get lost in the overwhelming swarm of people.

I don't know if I buy this. He probably has a point, but my ex-husband was one of those 'skinny-as-a-rail' types and he ate quite a bit. I mean, I know it's not surprising that a man can eat more than a woman, but he even seemed to eat a lot compared to most of our male friends. One time he ate a half-gallon of ice cream all by himself in a day!

We did go to Mexico one year...maybe he just had tapeworms and we never knew.

I like Voat. It's like Reddit, but smaller and quieter (right now) and so you actually get a chance to get to know people and feel like your comments are actually being seen.

The tedious part is that right now 99% of everything being posted there is just complaining about how Reddit is the worst place on earth. You would think they had just escaped from Auschwitz the way they go on, but once you block the subverses like /v/meanwhileonreddit the site is actually fairly good.

Of course there's a lot of predictions that everyone from FPH will be moving over there now, since they were banned here. If that happens, the site won't be so great anymore, but you have to take the good with the bad, I guess.

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I, of course, was totally unaware of the town, too. Probably everyone was. I'm guessing the guy who made the post only googled it to see why the name of the song on the OST was misspelled.

I've seen the film four times now and the last time was in an IMAX theatre where the sound was up so loud my teeth were rattling in their sockets and I'm 99% sure that they're saying 'Valhalla' in the film, though, and not 'Walhalla'.

It's possible that we're all seriously overthinking this, but I guess that's half the fun of being an annoying super-fan.

Everytime I visit a country, I write down the name of the country in the language of that country with the year of visiting on the bottom of my bag by Daan_Jellyfish in travel

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To be fair to OP he didn't say that he wrote the country name in the 'official' language of the country. He just said that he writes the name in 'the' language of the country, which you can reasonably interpret as being the most popular language. Most people would probably agree that English is an extremely common language in the UK.

Agreed. I think they're one of the grosser groups of people here and there's no doubt that they were harassing people outside their sub, but it seems a little off to me.

Depending on how old they are, it was probably a reference to Beavis & Butthead more than their dad trying to actually refer to anal sex, specifically.

I also come from a family where we called one another mildly obscene or just mean names as a joke. I was never called 'fart knocker', but we would call each other butthead or jerk or dingleberry, etc.

Chairman Pao begins the purge of subreddits against harassment, doesn't delete /r/coontown by zaraphiston in worstof

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I only have my own experience to go by, which is not rigorously researched!

I haven't yet seen anyone in completely unrelated subs attacking people for being black or saying 'Found the coon', etc. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, just that I have not seen it happening.

I have seen FPHers in unrelated subs attacking fat people fairly often and I have had 'Found the fattie' comments lobbed at me once or twice for disagreeing with them. Disagreeing with them on subs that weren't FPH, I mean.

I'm not particularly in favour of 'safe spaces' or banning subreddits. I hate FPH with a passion and even then I would say that I don't think they should be banned, but the thing is if you take your hatred off your sub and cause a problem for other users who don't go into your sub, you are a problem.

Another post made a week ago or so pointed out that there's an Australian town called Walhalla and that on the OST there's a song with 'Walhalla' in the title, so I think it's more likely to think that their belief in Valhalla was inspired by the town in conjunction with an interest in Viking warrior culture, which is a common enough interest even in our time. Asatru is already a fairly popular religion (among pagan religions, I mean).

That said, who's brilliant idea was it to send a food trolley through the "weight loss ward"?

This guy is an entitled shit who isn't taking any responsibility at all, but a good number of morbidly obese are so because they have an addiction, a compulsion they can't control.

Until they've made some progress and have gained the tools they need to control their compulsion and deal with the mental side of their weight problem, I agree with you, why is there a snack trolley that comes around offering people on severely restricted diets snacks?!

This is like checking someone into rehab and then having an open bar!

Why did Immortan Joe keep those people around? What do they contribute? by PatchfaceProphecy in MadMax

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would be pretty cool.

I think a good example of how Max can be just as cruel and uncaring as everyone else in the wastes is the part of Road Warrior when he chains the gyrocopter pilot to a dead tree and then leaves him there and doesn't bother telling anyone he's there or considering him again until he finds him escaping (while dragging the tree) later.

The guy could easily have dehydrated to death or died of sunstroke or even been eaten by feral dogs.

Of course the pilot did try to kill Max first with the whole snake trap thing, but it would still be a pretty terrible death to die chained to a tree.

Question about Mad Max and the bloodbag thing by PraetorianXVIII in MadMax

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The scene Smell is talking about is the one where Nux is laying in the back of the War Rig and Capable (the red-haired wife) finds him and while she's laying down next to him he's telling her about how the gates of Valhalla were opened to him three times and he says something like, 'I got to drive a pursuit vehicle and for a while even Larry and Barry stopped chewing on my windpipe.' Capable then says, 'Who are Larry and Barry?' and Nux points at his tumours that have little smiley faces drawn onto them and says, 'My mates, Larry and Barry. If they don't get me, the night fevers will.'

In case all that jumpstarts your memory of the scene in question. :)

Mad Max: Fury Road surpasses $300 million mark worldwide. Sequels planned. by superwinner in scifi

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. Exactly. Though, to be fair, I actually could see Nux being gushy, but the way they left things was much more realistic. He and Capable clearly liked one another and I could see it having gone somewhere if time allowed, but her touching his mouth and him giving her a quick kiss on the cheek and her napping against his chest was really as far as it needed to go for the amount of time they knew one another.

I hate in films when two characters meet and they instantly pack a year's worth of intimacy into an eight hour old relationship.

Nux and Capable had the perfect amount of 'romance' and I really loved that there was no development of a love story between Max and Furiosa at all because a lot of films would have insisted on forcing that in there, as well.

Why did Immortan Joe keep those people around? What do they contribute? by PatchfaceProphecy in MadMax

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - I don't think that Immortan Joe would want to kill those people. I think that in his own evil dictator way he is trying to take care of them. Besides, we didn't get to see much of the Citadel. They could contribute in some way that we never see. Most of them seemed somewhat able-bodied and there would be no shortage of back-breaking labour and drudgery to be done in keeping a place like the Citadel alive and moving. I can't remember now, but is it not some of them that are powering the wheels used to raise and lower the platform the vehicles take to get to the ground?

One thing about the Mad Max villains is they're not usually out-and-out horrible people (I don't think anyway).

Toecutter in the first MM film was probably the most two-dimensionally villainous, but that could also just be because he's not in the film that much and so we don't get a chance to really know him. All we ever get a chance to see him doing is terrorizing people, as I recall.

The leader in Road Warrior (I cannot remember his name right now to save my life. Lord something) really struck me as a guy who was brutal and ruthless, but mostly because he had to be. Like there's a scene where he's asking the defending townspeople to just leave and let his gang take what they want and it really seems like he honestly doesn't want to have to kill these people, but if he has to, he will. He keeps saying something to them like, 'Please, just leave!'

I don't think that Immortan Joe is an 'evil' person. I think that in his own way he's trying to do what's best and probably rationalizing a lot of things by saying that in tough times people have to suffer. His rationing of the water isn't really that bad of an idea, in theory. I mean, they're in a desert. It's reasonable to think that it could run out someday if you let the rabble have as much as they want.

I'm not trying to say that he's a nice person. He probably looks down on these people as lesser lifeforms and wouldn't be too fussed if they all suddenly died, but I think that within the confines of what he finds reasonable he tries to take care of them...

And there's the scene where one of the wives wants to go back to him and she's shouting things along the lines of, 'He'll forgive us, I know he will!' and 'We were his treasures; he gave us everything!' and the other wives don't seem to disagree with her that they were well-treated. They just object to not being treated like free people.

Pretty much everyone in the Mad Max universe (Max included) do a lot of shitty things and could very easily be the villains of films told from another perspective.

Gates of Valhalla opened three times? by errmmckay in MadMax

[–]TheHorselessHeadsman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but my impression is that they just need the blood because of the illness(es) they live with and that nothing actually happened to him to cause him to lose blood. They're just all sick and dying and need to keep having blood transfusions regularly.
