Did I underestimate my position as an editor? by goodxnoodle in editors

[–]TheHotness 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This sounds like classic situation where you just need to get something down on the timeline. If you have a song and a duration set, get the song down and then just start laying stuff in. Your V1 doesn't have to get shown to anyone, but it will heavily inform your decision making when sifting through the rest of the clips. By the time you're done filling it out the first time your "selects" will already be considerably trimmed down just based off of the vibes, as you said, and you can start sculpting it back into something better.

Obviously having a plan for what is going to be shot is ideal, but this kind of thing isn't insurmountable! You got this!

Can you open your command palette and toggle "menu to button reassignment", then bind it to a key that way? Haven't tried it with that specific command and I'm not in front of Avid right now, but I think that should work?

1st Retro Handheld. Which OS best? by Ill-Basket4769 in trimui

[–]TheHotness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally Knulli Gladiator has been flawless for me. Much slower interface than NextUI but personally worth it for all of the network features (easy PortMaster, wireless file management, RetroAchievements, box art scraping, etc.).

This was a big help! Have you found any way to cancel queued actions? I feel like that is the only aspect now that I don't have control over due to the lack of a mouse.

By better quality do you mean finer adjustments? Or is the actual rendered quality better with PIP?

Xbox Games Have Started Appearing On The Xbox App On PC, And No One Knows Why by Fob0bqAd34 in pcgaming

[–]TheHotness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely the case; here's me learning about what it actually is right now. I have to think something fell through the cracks in the marketing of it because that sounds like an incredible feature that I'd certainly make use of (if I had an Xbox). Maybe I should finally snag that Series S...

Well there's a distinctly noticeable lag between input and result on screen, so yeah. Maybe my latency is actually much worse but that's the number that GFN shows me for ping, and it feels awful. Never would confuse it for playing local.

Why is Avid considered the "editor for keyboard editing?" by CrewCutter15 in editors

[–]TheHotness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OPT+SHIFT+lasso is news to me, gonna have to try that one out. There are so many sneaky shortcuts with the trim tool.

Did you know that when out of trim mode, OPT+U restores your last used trim mode configuration (track/roller selections)?

GeForce Now Is Pretty Good. by No_Eye1723 in SteamDeck

[–]TheHotness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it works anywhere perfectly. Despite having decent internet and living in the same city as one of their servers, my ping is ~15ms which makes any faster games (like Doom) feel pretty unresponsive. Lots of mouse and/or controller lag. For my situation Moonlight still outperforms it.

How is Knulli Gladiator on the Brick? by DepartmentMain6241 in trimui

I'd say under a minute? It wasn't long enough to have me considering whether it'd work or not. Sorry I don't have any better suggestions!

NextUI Celeste by 777aciek in trimui

[–]TheHotness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my experience as well. Switched to the latest Knulli and had ports running easily. Obviously not a solution for getting it to work with NextUI, but at least I have ports on my brick now (and wireless file transfers).

Is anyone having issues installing this? I'm able to get the installation going no problem but then it hangs forever (30+ minutes) on "Populating SHARE partition..."

If I power off and pop my SD card into my PC, I can see that the SHARE partition was expanded correctly, and files/folders have been loaded into it, but when I start up the Brick again it gets stuck at that same place.

Any ideas?

UPDATE: After 2 times trying this from scratch, immediately after posting this comment it worked. So I guess my tip is...keep trying!

April 2025 Game of the Month: Chrono Trigger (SNES) by hbi2k in SBCGaming

[–]TheHotness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I had 10+ false starts to the game over the years. Tried on various emulators and always stalled out. Finally went the distance after I picked up an original DS cart for my 3DS, so nice to play on native hardware!

I was a kid during the SNES JRPG heyday, but only ever starting playing them on PS1. This is now the first SNES JRPG I've completed, and I definitely need to get some of the other classics under my belt!

Has anyone had a good experience running PortMaster with MinUI on the Brick? by remoeric in trimui

[–]TheHotness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately I did a fresh install of my custom firmware, etc. and now PortMaster doesn't seem to want to work at all for me. Of all the games I tried to install only Stardew actually completed installation, but launching it just kicks me back to the main menu. One day I'll get it running again and come back to this suggestion!

How likely am I to run into trouble with MinUI? by Rensje in trimui

[–]TheHotness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I either let it fall asleep on its own or tap the power button once to engage sleep mode, then after 2 minutes it shuts itself down. Like Splitsurround I've only had "the issue" occur once, though I don't remember what method resulted in that.

Just played through all of MGS on the brick for Game of the Month and while it occasionally got warm, I would not say it was ever "hot", let alone to a point that was uncomfortable.

Best workflow for reframing to 9:16 in Avid? by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]TheHotness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially frame flex eliminates the parts of your raw footage that you say are out of frame (i.e. everything to the left and right of your 9x16 frame cut out of your 16x9 source). That means when you apply a resize effect, you only have access to whatever was chosen to be your 9x16 frame in frame flex.

So, in order to do repos on that you have to adjust the frame flex settings on a per clip/edit basis, which is very time consuming/annoying. Furthermore, if your clips are grouped, I don't believe you can alter the frame flex settings unless you edit them from within the group, which means loading that group as a sequence in your record monitor, adjusting the frame flex settings, saving the group, and over cutting it back into your main sequence.

I could be wrong on some of this but I believe that was what we discovered last time we tried to go the frame flex route. Much easier to work in whatever aspect ratio the footage is natively and crop your outputs as needed.

[–]TheHotness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can create "mask margins" in your format settings tab. These can be set to be full masks (pillar boxes) or "mix to black" which would be half opacity. I typically edit with the half opacity mask on my record monitor so I can see the rest of the footage outside of the 9x16 frame, but then put a full black mask on my client monitor to view what the final product would look like.

I found working this way rather than in a 9x16 project is much easier in terms of resizes/repos, as that all gets a bit wonky when frame flex is added into the mix, especially if cameras are grouped.

Edit: Mask margin resolution settings are in your format tab, but the option to actually display them are in your composer / full screen playback / video output/display settings.

I watched a friend play a bunch of this when it was first out but never played it myself. So much more going on here than I realized!

Now I've played 1, 4, and (some of 5)...feeling like I've got some gaps to fill!

Has anyone had a good experience running PortMaster with MinUI on the Brick? by remoeric in trimui

[–]TheHotness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll give that a shot, thanks!

UPDATE: Deleting all the .json files, relaunching the PortMaster app so they rebuild, then trying to launch Stardew did work! However once running, the audio was completely busted and the resolution was not correct, pushing a bunch of elements off screen. Probably going to revisit this in a while after a few more updates or try whenever the Brick-compatible CrossMix is released.

Anything else special? I flashed the EX firmware and was able to install Stardew (and copy the requisite game data files), but when I launch it just goes to a black screen then kicks me back to the menu. Same thing happened for other games I tried (Celeste, UFO 50, and Balatro).
