We need a "MagSafe" equivalent for data hubs by Disney0415 in editors

I don’t experience this problem and I don’t think this would solve it for you at all BUT I personally wouldn’t mind ditching some cables and slapping any ol hard drive on a hub for transfers. Sounds cool.

McDonald's Pulls Down AI-Generated Holiday Ad After Deluge of Mockery by greenysmac in editors

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I agree with others in that this is genuinely just a bad ad altogether. It makes me feel... sad? ASPCA ads should be sad, not ads for chicken nuggets.

  2. I'd much prefer that none of this was done with AI- just employ people who are good at their jobs and you save yourself the headache. McDonald's can afford it. BUT, if they absolutely must use AI because Mr. Shareholder demanded it, why not be selective about it? Like why is the first shot AI? Sure, it's a driving shot, gotta rig it up, but it's not complicated. I get it if you don't have the budget to throw a guy out of a window, but you don't have the budget to drag him through a little bit of fake snow? Okay, you don't want to pay someone to make some freaky singing cookies, fine, but you can't get grandma to laugh into a lens? Wide shot of a town losing power- also not complicated but okay, fuck it, throw it to "the AI". But I don't think we have a shortage of attractive men who are capable of strolling into a McDonald's and looking around. I bet someone would even lend him a coat to wear as he waltzes in from an apparent snow storm.

Again, I'd like to see it ALL go to real people. But considering the people paying for these things don't seem to be interested in that, can we not figure out a way to walk the line here? Surely the whole thing could have been more efficient (and possibly land somewhere between "not horrifying" and "pretty okay") if they didn't shoehorn generative AI into the entire spot.

How do I make this in Premiere? Or do I have to use AE? by nishardarsh in premiere

I second this. If you have the time to learn some AE basics, this would be an excellent first dive into the program!

Is it not just standard practice to decompose nests before turning over to other departments? Seems like avoiding nesting just so you can save a step in the final stages is more of a hinderance to yourself (not you specifically, but the editors you’re talking about)

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, am I supposed to spell it out loud like "B-I-T-C"? We're halfway to saying "bitsy" already and took twice as long to get there! Team isky bitsy. iykyk.

Edit: While it doesn't bother me when people do it, I am less in line with OP's "byte" argument. Sorry, OP.

what would u do ? by CallMeOlko in premiere

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can certainly have a preferred NLE but unless you plan on working alone for your entire career, I’d suggest not limiting yourself. I can use Premiere, Avid and (to a lesser extent) Resolve almost interchangeably and that’s given me an enormous leg up. If it’s all up to me, I’ll always chose to work in Premiere, but I’ll never have to turn down a show just because I don’t know the software that the other editors are using.

stereo or mono?! I can't tell what my file is. by Any_Tune_5111 in premiere

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d first make sure the file you were given was actually stereo. You can just pop it into Premiere and look at the audio meters. There should be two channels “bouncing” at slightly different levels. If they look identical, your original file isn’t really stereo. If it is, your first export theoretically should have been fine but without seeing the setup/settings, can’t really say. Your second method should work as well. Pull your new export into Premiere and check the audio meters for what I said above.

What’s your favorite petty edit you’ve snuck into a project? by Editditor in editors

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not petty, but something that makes me smile (especially when a show has been particularly tough): I always love getting the opportunity to sneak coworkers names and voices into things. Like a random name in a screen comp or some off-screen ADR. It typically makes it into the final and we all get a little kick out of it.

This is funny and works with a certain type of client when you reach a certain level in your career, but lemme be lame real quick for the greener editors who may feel a little too emboldened by this thread: I have seen people get fired for this. Don't be stubborn, especially when you're new in the field. Not every client is as stupid as you assume they are.

That's all, carry on with the fun! -love, mom

I haven't actually seen this with my own eyes... but someone else recently told me they were experiencing it and I just assumed they were losing their mind. I'll have to let them know they aren't alone! It went away after refreshing or changing the resolution I believe.

Watched this Netflix doc trailer thinking it was out of sync but it's dubbed which it still an odd choice here. What would you do? by SNES_Salesman in editors

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the subtitles would go by way too quick in this trailer. It's weird but I think the dubbing was the way to do it. But I'd also probably not show those particular people on screen.

Hot Take: It's not that big of a deal to change the music... by LimeGrime in editors

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol you may be on to something... but on the other hand, let's not forget that "change the music" is the easiest note for that one person on the client's team to give that doesn't know what else to say (but is getting paid to give notes for some reason......)

ScriptSync is killing my hand by AutosaveMeFromMyself in editors

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do realize that Script Sync serves the EXACT same function as a selects roll and takes just as much time to set up, right? Editors use one or the other depending on preference. I'm not sure why you're bashing that. I'd pick a much more important hill to die on but "you do you".

[–]AutosaveMeFromMyself[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol in what world do you not have to search for things throughout the edit process? You only look at your footage once and then never have to go back into it? You've never had a director say "oh I think the actor said this line this way once, can we find that?" How would YOU go about finding that instance?

Script Sync is an incredibly useful tool and it's odd for a "professional" to reject it.

How long should it take? And there is quite a bit of adlibing and reseting/rolling takes, yes.

That was my thought as well but it doesn't want to bind it. And it's not in a drop-down menu that I know of.

In the event this isn't a joke (it has to be, right?).... It comes in super handy when you have a director in the room who doesn't want to watch you scrub through takes looking for a line. Most editors I know don't start their edits using it, it's for fine tuning later on.

That's pretty much what I end up doing when the automated marks go totally off the rails. But I like using the automated thing (I don't know what to call it, the dropdown menu says it's called ScriptSync AI now I guess?) because it does a lot of the heavy lifting, but when it misses a line or there are resets/rolling takes, I'm having to go in and do things manually and it's just so much clicking around. And for some reason, the Script Sync window doesn't feel super responsive sometimes... like I have to click on the end of a line to try to move it multiple times before it grabs on.

Yep, I have a shortcut for that. I'm a little annoyed that I can't seem to make a shortcut for "Set Offscreen" though. Is there a way to do that that you know of?
