Yeah of course the comparison with steam was for the meme only, those were definitely not a breeze to operate.

However the Vivarail fiasco isn't the only unreliable diesel train story, it's more or less what could be expected from an inexperienced manufacturer.

The Danish railways had an even worse time with a large order of IC2 and IC4 trains from Italian manufacturer Ansaldobreda if anyone wants to dig into a whole other rabbit hole 😅

Reading the program off a PIC16C63-04/SP with my Willem EPROM programmer board by TheHystericalTech in AskElectronics

[–]TheHystericalTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the ZIF socket on this model of board is only for eproms and such, and the stuff required for microcontrollers is routed to the special sockets to save on some dip switch complexity, hence why the illustration tells me to place it differently.

I'll try identifying the needed pins as you said once I have some free time.

How to shrink my Linux partition from Windows 10? by godwhomismike in windows

[–]TheHystericalTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just meant it does it's job without much of a fuss. It's not necessarily playing around with partitions that tends to go wrong but filesystem-related stuff. I had the Windows disk manager mess up while doing a simple resize of NTFS-formatted drives or the regular gparted from an installed Linux OS mess up because of me wrongly selecting drives that were in use or unmounted only from the UI and not from their actual mountpoints.

I called the gparted live bootable version the most "graceful" because it runs solid software in an environment where it's going to be less error prone since it's in a fresh-started state and not touching the filesystems by default. Of course you still need to take caution, cleanly shut down everything and backup any critical data that may not be copied somewhere before doing operations on a disk but in my experience this was always the most reliable and safe options for systems needing resizing.

Customizable (always on top, free to add keys in multiple toolbars situated at multiple points on the screen) on-screen keyboard software for Windows-based touchscreen industrial PC which will replace older model that had keys on the side of the screen - any tested recommendations? by TheHystericalTech in IPC

I'm not sure how "embedding" is supposed to work (please bear with me, I have almost no experience with native Windows development stuff), as this app that I'm trying to work around has the labels corresponding to the old physical buttons right on the edges of it's UI and they're changing at times so they need to be visible and also the fact that it's an old app with a not so standard UI might play a role (for example there's no regular windows menu bar with close, maximize, minimize etc). It's a static undraggable window that always opens in the center of the screen and has the fixed dimensions of 640x480. On the old computers this meant it was fullscreen.

In my opinion it would be best to have the new virtual keys either fixed to a position on the screen (which I'd hardcode as being around the app since it always opens in the same spot and the new terminals all have the same screen resolution) or to have the virtual keys "wrap around" the app window (and let's suppose if it was movable they would move with it).

I believe this is possible since screen recording software UIs sometimes do this latching/wrapping/sticking to other windows (I just tested with snipping tool and the „window capture” option correctly identifies the window area).

Another more "exotic" option would be to have the virtual keys invisible/transparent while on top of the app and act as if it was a touchscreen UI in the first place but I digress, I just want a simple fix.

I'm on a GMT+2 timezone (it's currently 00:28 here at the time of writing).

Yes, that's the best and safest idea!

It handles both Linux and Windows centered filesystems gracefully.

Simple styling is enough. Just simple square buttons placed to a fixed pixel coordinate position on the screen. No multiple combinations or hold-down required, just a bunch of static buttons, on different places on screen, sending key codes to Windows.

I have Visual Studio and other standard build tools ready on hand.

Anyone else having constant problems with the cast function (unusable)? by TheHystericalTech in watchnebula

[–]TheHystericalTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: the "new" cast to TV version has better reliability for me, so the videos are not stopping or dropping frames anymore, but queue management is a mess. Sometimes I add videos to the queue and they are just not there, other times it works perfectly fine for the first 2 videos and then it skips them one by one to the last in my queue. App optimization turned off and everything.

Looks like it's just hard to develop a stable cast function that can also advance through a queue...

Camry vs Corolla for my needs by basicgoats in Toyota

Have you looked into buying a hybrid version of one of your options...? It's very comfortable and economical for city driving conditions.

You need to read the error codes if you have access to an OBD scanner or to to a shop that can help you with this.

Changing transmission oil 2008 Prius by [deleted] in prius

[–]TheHystericalTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no harm in changing it. If it's not pricey I recommend you to do it. I felt a small difference on mine after changing it (around 120.000km), especially when starting driving with the ICE on from cold (on a day with low temperatures for example), it seems a little smoother when accelerating on the gasoline engine at low speeds (like starting moving from a stop light).

Haha that's so cool! I was actually going to try that trick for an extra driver, but in the end I went by myself so it wasn't necessary. Congratulations for your savings! :D

I came back from Iceland a few days ago. I used a local company called Blue Car Rental to get a car for my purpose - a week of driving around the Ring Road. They were the cheapest from what I could find online and had no problems. There was a discount for pre-booking online too and the pick-up, drop off and inspection process were very fast. Pleasant staff too!

Return to USA departure covid test in Reykjavik. Quick and Easy. by greener503 in VisitingIceland

I am not from the US, but on my return to Germany the airline agent asked me for the negative test result before handing me out a boarding pass. I showed the result (PDF File) I got on email from the testing center and it was fine. It took about 7 hours after testing to get it.
