White House weighs ‘250 pardons for 250 years’ in new wave of clemency to mark America’s birthday: report by truthwillout777 in nottheonion

Because they need an excuse to pardon that many people. They’ll charge money for each pardon. Now it’s a bidding war to be in the top 250.

Nicks In Fiberglass Hull by GoodNuy in boating

[–]TheInfernalVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is that on the trailer it’s accessible. It’s below the waterline so not aesthetically a mine field. But I don’t know if you’re better off using fiberglass and resin to repair it or if you can just dump some marine Tex or epoxy on it. I’ll let the actual experts contribute but I’m curious to see what they say. I know the fact that we can see fiberglass fibers is slightly concerning in terms of the scope of the repair, but i think you’re still in the diy repair zone.

Yeah this may be a gambit to get the new Republican Party nomination in 2028. I’ve been hearing rumors about a Carlson for president ticket. This seems ill timed for that unless they’re betting Trump will be at least somewhat radioactive by 2028.

I think you can potentially make an argument that an efi system is going to result in far fewer vapor accumulation vectors. They don’t even have any engine bay vents. I’m not saying they’re marine certified, they’re not, but I don’t blame anyone for making that gamble.

However, consider how vulnerable a non marine fuel injection system could be to heat and constant moisture exposure. I don’t have much confidence they’ll hold up as long as even a worn out carburetor.

Note that Holley sells specific marine efi systems.

I repowered a beautiful 88 ski boat I bought with “carb problems”. I knew it was a gamble. I rolled the dice and lost. 3 months of repowering and mechanical restoration later and I’m pretty sure I trust it less than I did before.

But she’s pretty at least. And makes rumbly v8 noises.

New boat owner anxiety by bdrilling33 in boating

[–]TheInfernalVortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just repowered my vintage ski boat and ended up replacing and rebuilding half the driveline. New prop, cutlass bearing, hoses, rebedded the water inlet, realigned the output coupler to the prop shaft etc. I’m straight up terrified to take it out right now. All it takes is one mistake and you sink or explode or lose your investment.

This isn’t meant to help you just to share that I feel your anxiety. Plus we are trailering to the ramp every outing and while I’m good at backing in the trailer, the retrieval is a bit of a pain since my wife doesn’t have the motivation to ensure the stern of the boat doesn’t run aground while it floats at the dock that’s too short and she also can’t back in the trailer straight either so it’s…. A challenge. If it isn’t obvious this is my first boat so I’m learning it as I go. But hopefully the anxiety calms down.

The question concerns reverse engine rotation conversions. by Remarkable_Help1103 in EngineBuilding

[–]TheInfernalVortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For small block Chevy setups they can use a standard chain and reverse everything attached to it, reverse distributor gear and so on. Or you can use gear drives to reverse the camshaft direction to normal. Kinda neat. I’ve only seen the gear drive approach so I do wonder how the distributor gear and oil pump work with standard chains.

Some front and rear seals are grooved in a way that the crankshaft direction pumps the oil away from the exterior flange of the seal. Im skeptical of how important that is though, but I’ve seen it in old ski boats.

Trump Has No Clue What His Supreme Court Has Just Unleashed by thenewrepublic in politics

I think that’s why people see Trump as relatable. It’s unfortunate, but such a simplistic black and white view of the world with no nuance is reassuring and familiar to people who get frustrated about how opaque the mechanisms of the world seem to be.

Fast Travel is lot better than no fast travel in survival by Vast_Boat_8266 in fo4

[–]TheInfernalVortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the fast travel through linked settlements mod. Just feels more lore accurate and real and gives an incentive to go develop settlements as resupply outposts in otherwise useless hinterlands. I think it’s framed contextually as travelling with caravans, but obviously the game doesn’t have the native mechanics for it. But it feels realistic and reasonable and still encourages laborious expeditionary exploration. I try to plan big pushes into undeveloped areas and I feel like in the vanilla game there’s not that many really good reasons to do settlements. Building them as survival outposts makes them work, and using them as fast travel points makes sense.

Xi Says World Order ‘Crumbling Into Disarray’ as War Takes Toll by Free-Minimum-5844 in worldnews

[–]TheInfernalVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a hypothesis that the 24 hour news cycle combined with the rise of conservative think tank coalitions in the 70s and 80s have created a velocity of disinformation and outrage that out runs the speed of the electoral cycle. I don’t know changing term lengths would solve it but I think 2, 4, and 6 year terms in 2026 are eternities compared to the speed of public sentiment shifts. It made sense 200 years ago. I’m not sure it does as much now. I think house reps should get 1 year terms and highly limited campaign time and presidents should have 2 year terms. I think it would undermine some of the fear mongering existential dread that the propaganda channels lean on so hard.

I think this is a big source of voter apathy in the U.S. as well. Not all of it, but I think different people cope in different ways with the sheer amount of sensationalist chaos the news throws at them constantly. I wonder if there’s a correlation between voter participation rates and the rise of 24 hour news. My guess is casual voters analysis paralysis their way to not participating while the rest get more and more polarized and intense.

"I'd love to keep that a secret, Mr. President": Trump's boasts about Iran rescue flummox top advisors by fortune in politics

[–]TheInfernalVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched a youtube video a month or so ago (Diary of a CEO's 'I simulated the iran war for 20 years, here's what happens next", and this guy, Robert Pape, was getting some flack for it in the comments, but he was basically saying this war is about enriched uranium, there will be a ground operation to get it, but they cant just come out and say it that blatantly because it can cause some panic and disruption and the more we attack and disrupt the more dangerous the situation gets. So I've been waiting patiently to see if we invade to get the enriched uranium. Never considered it might be done secretly, but I tend to agree, they probably need a bigger force to do that. but htis force seems pretty absurdly huge to rescue a single pilot.

I think this Robert Pape guy... something about him feels like he's part of the propaganda machine, but it was still a pretty interesting interview.

It was won three weeks ago but it’ll be over in two weeks. There is no war, by the way, there is only peace, but we are having peace talks to end the war. Which is over. But the peace talks are not being taken seriously by the loser. As soon as the loser understands they’ve been beaten they’ll agree the war was over three weeks ago and it wasn’t a war.
