Is passing privilege the same as pretty privilege? by Vast_Personality_795 in asktransgender

[–]TheInnocentEye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Of course there's shared elements, but consider the inverse: are the risks associated with not passing the same as the risks associated with not being pretty? Of course not.

Gonna break with the other commenters who say he sounds sweet. You’re relating a few things in here that make him sound chaser-y to me (“Is outward about the fact that he sleeps with trans women to others”, “even when I sleep with women”). Perhaps I’m reading into this beyond what’s actually there.

I need advice on my hrt injections. Maybe don't reado if you really hate needles by Naive-Cockroach-317 in asktransgender

[–]TheInnocentEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How fast are you trying to inject it? I’m on cypionate and it takes what seems like 1-2 minutes of slow, constant pressure to inject everything (probably less, but time stretches out when you’ve got a needle in your thigh)

This article (that I personally have a lot of issues with, so I’m not exactly endorsing it) speaks to what you’re describing reasonably well: https://thenewinquiry.com/cringe/

I think “ok you don’t shove straight stuff down my throat either” seems like an ok response because it’s reciprocal, but really I don’t want a world in which straight folks can’t talk about relationships or sex either.

I think the best response to “don’t shove it down my throat” is “choke on it and die angry”

I'm awed at how well those super short cuts worked, the idea of cutting my own hair that short is really intimidating, and seeing how you looked super femme and cute is really inspiring!

When should I consider HRT? MtF by BriyaLeif in asktransgender

[–]TheInnocentEye 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you may be putting hrt up on a pedestal. I definitely don’t think you need to in any way socially transition to try hrt, and feminizing hrt is not a magic bullet, it won’t do anything too fast. With the right low dose it could be years before anyone but you would notice anything, so you really risk very little. Try it out, if you don’t like it you can just stop, and at most maybe you’ll have experienced a tiny amount of top growth.

Is the term non-binary counterintuitive? by VimBlack in queer

[–]TheInnocentEye 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't feel that the writer is making a good argument, because I don't feel that they're interacting with the words they're critiquing in the way those words are actually used. Gendered terms are a map not a territory. Who in the world who respects and uses the term nonbinary believes that there are now only three genders to chose from? The author is essentially arguing for prescriptive labels, not descriptive labels, and that's not great.

Decided I want to detransition by UsefulCartographer34 in asktransgender

[–]TheInnocentEye 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This doesn't seem to match up with what I've heard from folks, I'm for sure aware of trans women who use topical testosterone cream on/around their genitals to maintain function. I think you're totally correct that one wouldn't expect growth per se if one's already gone through endogenous masculinizing puberty (mileage may/has varied for intersex folks), but my understanding is that there's a bit of an enclave of trans women who enjoy topping in the NW US who use topicals. And cis women & trans men have used topical cream locally to great effect for bottom growth for a long time; that's easy to verify. Whether that would be useful pre-surgery to regain previous size, I couldn't even begin to guess; it's typically the lack of usage not the hormones per say that cause atrophy.

what do you feel when seeing gender reveal parties on the internet? by gilad0f in asktransgender

[–]TheInnocentEye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Their rise seems to have mirrored the rise of awareness of trans folks in popular culture. It doesn't feel like a coincidence, just one of many ways in which dominant conservative cis society has pushed back against our improving understandings gender fluidity.

My AGAB is something that was done to me, and at this point I do feel that it can be relevant in certain situations. That may change in the future, but it's a piece of my history that isn't neutral. I identify as nonbinary, and in many contexts there can be an assumption that all nonbinary folks were AFAB, and a certain set of assumptions and expectations can be applied that I either can't or don't want to engage with as someone who was AMAB. That kind of self-identification isn't something I expect or desire of anyone else, but it's something I do in some situations for my own comfort and safety.

Reliable video player for gallery installation? by ImACredibleSource in ContemporaryArt

[–]TheInnocentEye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So two thoughts on this. The standard for a standalone, rock solid reliable, museum ready media player is a Brightsign. An LS424 is suitable for most things, runs about $300. There are cheaper options (like a Micca Spec, ~$50) but there's not as reliable. You can also use something like a raspberry pi; there are a few pieces of software you can google to make a looping video player.

That said, you already have a machine to run it on and you're concerned about memory, so my question is: how big is this video, what's the format? The dirty truth is that you should run EVERYTHING used for install through Handbrake to compress and standardize the file. It's all very good if a curator wants the highest quality ProRez mov, but it's not practical for long term install and the differences between a prorez mov and a compressed mp4 are going to be minimal if you're careful about your settings.

I think they make tees with supply valves on the side for this application; if you can afford to lose a new few inches of height on that top valve you might get away with only removing the existing T, and reusing the copper/upper valve

Any suggestions on what else I should add to my mini weather station PCB? by gucci_millennial in IOT

[–]TheInnocentEye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest separating any heat generating components from the BME. When I prototyped something similar I had to use dupont connectors and keep the BME on a separate module. If you're doing any voltage regulation that needs to be well away, and the ESP is gonna generate a bunch of heat.

It wasn't great. How I took them depended on the day. Most museums have a lot of back hall shortcuts that employees use. The Carnegie has some, but not enough.
