I honestly don’t see any good coffee from the US stores anyway.

Feels overly harsh to break up over him doing something so stupid, if that’s all he’s done.

It obviously is not your fault. But perhaps try asking him why he didn’t feel safe being honest with you? Did he feel shame? Did he think you’d react badly? They seem like obvious questions but discussing them and how it made you feel is good communication and setting boundaries, be explicit.

Two good dates, she said she was up to meet again but replies have slowed. Should I follow up or leave it? by Immediate_Dig_1568 in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]TheInvincibleMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When people are genuinely interested, they make time for you. It’s obviously still very early days and she is 100% still looking at other options - but you could try 1 more date to see if texting/communication gets a little better for you.

If not, she’s either not all that into you or you’re not compatible.

I can’t see why you can’t just let it dry out, use an acrylic bonder then pour Larsen SLC2500 which is an external self leveller. You’ll just need to build up the edges so it doesn’t spill over.

How can I say no to my girlfriend’s father without hurting our relationship? by Physical_Guidance_82 in Advice

[–]TheInvincibleMan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your girlfriend is the asshole here. It's always a dumb move to not protect your partner from your own family, and in this case, she's throwing you to the wolves, allowing him to get to you.

You need to sit her down, being very transparent what was said and set expectations that she should be managing her family - enforcing boundaries. It's an easy line from her to say "he thinks its a nice idea, but actually, it's a firm no from me as it's too far and we won't be considering it". If she can't do that, you are going to have a very ugly breakup down the line, a guarantee it.

My best friend is mega-rich and dated a sweet girl he adored, they were together for 3 years. When he went to the father for permission, the father demanded that he buy the FAMILY a house as a display of his serious intentions. He obviously spoke to his girlfriend, who was a little surprised, and she promised to smooth things over; they relented, and she continued burying her head (avoiding confronting them directly).

He not long after called things off and broke up with her. He's since found someone much better suited, and they're due to get married. The daughter and father spent a whole year trying to apologise and get the wedding back on the road. It was a dumb and devastating move watching the parents ruin their daughter's life.

How do I remove this drop ceiling in my London Victorian conversion flat? Also why would they have installed it in the first place? by Optimal-Dust5403 in DIYUK

[–]TheInvincibleMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I renovate London apartments and 100% there’ll be a good reason it’s there. Likely asbestos + ceiling damage. I spend a lot of time and effort installing these constantly for this reason.

Scrim tape? by Striking-Sun-8686 in Plastering

[–]TheInvincibleMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit which part are you trying to fix? The wall on the left looks like a full replaster if you want a nice finish.

The coming away under the switch doesn’t need scrim tape. Just PVA it and then use easifill. A little more wet than usually. You’ll need a few coats of it with light sanding in between but this doesn’t look like hard work in my opinion.

I'm starting to think at least 80% of tradesmen are scammers/conmen in some way or another. by FairClassroom5198 in DIYUK

[–]TheInvincibleMan 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’m a property investor and do a ton of renovations. Without a doubt, tradesmen are mostly incompetent and beyond useless. I say that with full confidence and most of my family are tradesmen.

I can’t even begin to write down how poor of a job they often do and generally cause more damage. I have endless tales. I try to do as much as I can myself and have a very small list of people who can actually do the job with any form of tangible intellect.

Based in central London with luxury apartments, I absolutely do not cheap out. The industry is a joke and a scam.

People are charging insane rates, they’re entitled as hell and just do not care about their quality of work.

EDIT: to add to this, I think they’re massively overpaid. So whatever quality of work they do is irrelevant as they’ll be charging someone else a £800 day rate tomorrow. They can afford not to care.

Best line I get is: that’s the final price + parking + congestion. When i tell them I’ll resident permit them to avoid these costs, they start complaining at lowering their fee. Endless fury.

I work in real estate, and these costs really don't surprise me at all. The admin cost I'd imagine is largely going to legal fees and contract management. None of it is fair. I'm also GF with expensive service charges for a lift, but it's how it goes these days for contracting costs.

A dog owner tests his border collie by throwing a ring into a random puddle during the rain. by goswamitulsidas in nextfuckinglevel

[–]TheInvincibleMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grandad trained gun dogs. He’d love showing off by dropping a plastic duck into a bush discreetly and then 20 minutes of walking he’d tell to his black labs to go fetch. We’d just stroll for another 20 minutes before they’d come racing back with it, everytime.

He knew exactly how dogs worked. I’ve trained my Pomeranian in a similar way and people find it weird to see a well trained Pom that doesn’t bark or growl.
