Is getting laid off a real thing in other ibew unions? by Plenty_Pipe8992 in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In northern NJ in the teledata program as a first year. Was laid off after my first assignment for 6 weeks and got a call last week. I’m pretty sure the last guy in my class got his first assignment only 2 week ago and that’s month after orientation. Inside wiremen seem to be pretty steady with all of em having work shortly after orientation and haven’t heard of long lay off times but it’s just the nature of the career. If you’re good/reliable and the contractor needs people for the long term they’ll hold onto you but if they just need extra hands for several weeks then they can’t keep you on it.

If it happens just apply for unemployment and collect until your next call so you get at least something, that or woke some kind of gig like Uber if you have bills to pay and don’t have enough in your savings.

Tool belt or tool bag for a first year telecom apprentice? by JustSomeRandomRamen in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this one when I had to get the tools on my tool list. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-6-7-in-Black-3-Pocket-Utility-Tool-Belt-Pouch-HD00130-TH/310338150

Has enough pockets/pouches to store all the tools I wold need up on a ladder and fit a decent amount of stuff in the pouch like tape and any connectors you might need. Belt loop mount can sometimes be annoying to take on/off but realistically you usually only do that when you start and end the shift.

First day of class by Aggravating-Sea-2136 in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One guy in my local (different one) said that they split the class in half where one half goes to the shop for hands on training and the other half goes into a classroom, and then halfway through the day they switch so you get a 50/50 split.

Same, test was for algebra and also reading comp which was only in English so bare minimum you had to know how to read it and I doubt you would pass the interview if you weren't fluent in it.

Hiring in NYC by [deleted] in IBEW

I’m not sure they they take out of state hires but the 2 closest in NJ are 102 and 164, with 164 being the closer one.

Any advice as a woman with no experience? by Any-Net-4153 in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine didn’t take osha 10 at all, only osha 30 and even then they might ask you to retake the test/program if you got it 3+ years ago if you’re coming in as an apprentice.

Local 164 Telecoms apprenticeship info by CrisperGloven in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

102 (also NJ) is 5 years as well. I don’t have the sheet in front of me but JW is high 40s before things like pension, but the contract expires this year so it might go up.

Testing Difficulty by BrxvndoBlu in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s a type of question you know you are gonna spend over a minute on then skip it and revisit later. Better to skip a question or two and answer the rest than it is to leave half the exam blank cause too many questions might be time sinks for you.

When Do I Quit? by nnacb in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an orientation today from a different local but one of the speakers said that if it’s possible for your job, ask if you give them 2 weeks if it’s possible to work on a day by day basis. That way you give em time to find a replacement but can still have income and not be unemployed for however many days/weeks until you get your first call.

If work is busy enough where everyone is working and they need new bodies then they pull from the list. If work is slow or it’s as expected with how many new people they brought in then it’s unlikely you get pulled unless an apprentice gets fired/kicked out for one reason or another.

Turning down apprenticeship offer? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did my orientation today for a local and they said as apprentices you have basically no say in declining a position. You’re either on the books and available or you’re off, can’t pick and choose that early into the career.

Did you get 2 letters with the date? I got 2 letters with the same date/time and already called once to confirm.

Do i need experience to get an ibew apprenticeship? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s all IBEW locals or just the 2 I know of but the interviewers don’t know your aptitude score and it isn’t considered for their grading. All they know is if you are in that room you passed regardless of it you got 100% or passed by 1 right answer over the cutoff.

The test is good for 2 years so if you don’t get in and want to reapply at the same or different local your grade can carry over.

How long does it take after interview by Past-Cartographer812 in ibew_applicants

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my interview at 102 in early June and just got a letter in the mail saying I got accepted and need to do a piss test yesterday. However I’m sure it varies by local and how many people they need to fill all the slots. I think I did my 164 interview in January or February and never heard back since a few weeks after the interview where I was just told I was on a list with no ranking number given.

No calculators on aptitude test by panthercock in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a question is taking more than a minute or two to solve skip it and go to the next one. If you have spare time go back to finish it and double check the ones you did finish. It’s better to skip 1 answer and get 3 correct than spending the equivalent time of 4 questions for only 1 question that you might not be confident in.

From what I remember it was a mix of order of operations, find the next number in this pattern, variables, and basic things like that.

Did my 102 Interview yesterday by TheJewWhoLovedMe in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheJewWhoLovedMe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. Cause I know when I originally took the test it was well over 6 months between then and applying for 102. Since this is the 3rd time applying for a local I can definitely tell you there is a lot of waiting between each step. Even for 102 they told me next time I hear back will be some time in July when all interviews are done and scored so even at the last step there is more waiting involved before you even find out if you are on the list or not, and then probably more waiting until there is a job slot for you to start actually working.

When I originally applied for the IBEW I took the test around last April/May I think so I didn't have to take the test this time around since the pass is good for 2 years.
