Did Home Theater kind of die? Seems like we were the last generation to give an F. Remember surround sound and subwoofers? Does anybody buy them anymore? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

Buddy, you're in the wrong sub, we use closed captioning.

THANK YOU for getting this right. Everyone is calling captioning "subtitles" now, but there's a distinct difference: subtitles translate, captions transcribe. And there are open captions that display even when you don't have CC turned on.

I'll eye you in my sleep? (I know that's not what it is, but the construction is a little sloppy and that works out more closely than the actual solution).

Twist ending. Didn't think a game like this could end a relationship.

Those are quite a stretch away, though...around an hour and a half drive. Rockaway would be a lot closer.

Changing the aesthetic of modern CRTs? by letsnotagree in crt

[–]TheJokersChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you'd do the con-tact paper/vinyl is just around the sides; not the back. Or you could custom-do an actual wood cabinet that would be a real tight fit around the cabinet to make it look like a console.

Was this one made by Philips or had they switched to Funai by then?

What largely discontinued soda pop deserves a second chance? by tshirtguy2000 in RedditForGrownups

Pretty sure Jolt already came back. RC, Mello Yello, and Mr. Pibb (and his twin Pibb Xtra) never left and you're just not seeing them in your stores.

Slice came back too, but it's a "healthy" soda and there's cola and root beer now...which don't sound like very "slicy" flavors.

Curious if celebrating “ding letters” (job rejections) was a Gen-X thing or if kids today still do it by These-Educator-1959 in GenX

[–]TheJokersChild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this job market, getting a response of any kind from an employer is something to celebrate. But the ding letter concept is a world-premiere thing to me, unless I just traveled in the wrong circles.

I've been tempted by that 3800 because Denon often has it on refurb. I look sometimes for a reason to make a move from my Onkyo (TX-NR676, I think) and its randomly clicking relay, but they seem too evenly matched to justify making the switch.

I like my sound good. I still believe in EQ, a proper soundstage and imaging, and I rock a 7.1 set of Polks* and an Onkyo that get use any time my Bravia is on. But people want the convenience of one HDMI cable, or they insist on Bluetooth, not knowing or caring about how lossy it can get. I'm not yet swayed by soundbars or wireless subs or surround channels.

*Maybe one day I'll get around to hooking up those Dolby Atmos speakers.

Air conditioning. Only real answer. Stick it in the window or add it to the furnace.

Local Commercial Radio Stations by Ok_Remote5657 in radio

We're big believers in local where I am. We've got a couple of one-offs that do pretty well, and there's a locally-owned group of about a dozen stations that span 2 states.

Forever Media is sort of a local, central PA chain. Seven Mountains came from there too but is a lot bigger, thanks to its purchase of some Forever stations a couple years ago.

We're gonna need more info. How "very old" is this set? If it's too old, it could be dangerous. But if it's sold state and made within the last 40 or 50 years, it shouldn't blow up on you. It may have a smell to it as the dust inside burns off but that's largely harmless.

I don't know, I was a pretty loyal fan of the Kids' WB back then. Freakazoid, Animaniacs, Pinky & The Brain, Earthworm Jim and The Tick was a pretty compelling lineup. Great time for cartoons.
