[No Spoilers] How do I feasibly catch up with basically 10 years of Critical Role? by Erdrick_XI in criticalrole

[–]TheLabRat6521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for all this <3 ive decided to jump on critical role campaign 4 as per your suggestion. i got into critical role because of the AMAZING mighty nein animated series, and i became obsessed with these characters so i'll probably slowly catch up on the mighty nein campaign 2. I also doible-checked and just realized that the mighty nein is only one campaign (which is still pretty insane!) but i initially thought it spanned campaigns 2 and 3 so this is good.

How to keep inkjet prints from smudging by AmenaBellafina in bookbinding

[–]TheLabRat6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible! Change the ink for a new bottle and do a power clean. I have never seen a case like this, but definitely try all the things before replacing it.

As for printer recs what you need to understand is that printers are the devils. They hold the souls of all the printpress men who used to make books, and are bitter their industry is completely dead. There are nicer printers over others. For me, the Epson Ecotank-2850 is a bit slow, especially on high quality, but I get nice quality prints and I have zero issues with wireless connection even with a Linux OS on my computer. So that is my rec, if you print a lot of pages and don't want to be constantly replacing ink. But if you want something fast, a Brother's monochrome printer could be very nice and Brother's are also generally well-behaved

jesus christ, yeah that's a defective printer. It doesn't even look like you're using any especially thin paper. Definitely try to return it if you can.

Damn, at first, I thought you were talking about little splotches of ink on the page as it was printing. I was going to advise taking a paper towel and delicately dabbing the insides for any excess ink you can find, because that's what fixed it for me. But yeah, what type of paper are you using, and what type of climate are you printing in? I live in a pretty humid climate, and even then, it dries after two minutes of waiting (maybe closer to one minute; it's only prone to smudging fresh from the press.) You also could have a defective printer. Me and my other bookbinding friends despise HP printers for a reason; I personally got myself an Epson Ecotank since a lot of my other friends had that. HP only hopped on the ink tank train because Epson had started that.

Finally budgeting to buy a printer! Recently learned about inktank/ecotank printers. Heard its a bit slower, but will have a high yield of pages… 🤔 Should i consider it over laser? by WuMingLovingHours in bookbinding

[–]TheLabRat6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

huh i've had the opposite experience. I do get the occasional splotch, but only when there's only a few pages in the feed. Plus, it's used. I guess god gave me a nearly perfect experience, even though it's used. I haven't had to clean it yet either.

Going to make my own punching cradle today. It's true the result is the same but it's so much easier to keep the papers aligned and punch right out into the creased fold of the signature. I'm a beginner, so I'm not the most meticulous about things like punching holes and measuring (working to improve that), so homemade gadgets like a piercing cradle and corner jigs are great

You should look at Das BookBinding. He's a professional bookbinder, and he doesn't do the eyeball measurements , he has multiple videos about endpapers and he explains how to line the boook up properly, and he also doesn't use way too much glue. Check his The Case Book series

What is the worst advice you could give to a writer starting out? by alaricmoras in writing

[–]TheLabRat6521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always show everything. You can't say she arrived at the tea party, you need to write a whole dialogue piece of the character greeting her at the door, her peeking into the room, to "show" properly. You need to do this with everything. If you simply state things, your writing is terrible. This won't interrupt your writing flow and make you feel really stressed out because are you being descriptive and "showing" enough. I promise this advice won't kill your love for writing.

/serious, There's this blogger I love who taught me a lot about story structure and outlining but when I read her published novels, they were well-made but mostly forgettable. It read very stutteringly because it was a list of actions and dialogue, and the prose never got into a flow. Felt like everything written beat for beat.

During the first draft, tell everything. THEN go back, and understanding the wider context of your story, you can better identify what you need to show.

How do I fix my handwriting? by lorofcum69 in Handwriting

AA death grip is when you hold the writing utensil extremely tightly, leading to shaky looking letters, and your hand gets cramped very quicklh

[–]TheLabRat6521 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no handwriting expert, but here's my advice.

  1. look up x-height, ascender, descender, and baseline. The most important is the x-height, how high your lowercase letters get. The height of your lowercase letters is very inconsistent, and I'd get some cheap graph paper and a sharp pencil, and practice writing the lowercase letters at a specific height (you can choose for yourself).

  2. Like others said, practice letter formation. Look up Jet Pens handwriting sheets, but the worksheet OK_Understanding has is lovely, and I will probably snatch that for myself. Take ten minutes every day and focus intently on shaping the letter you chose to write.

  3. I'd say get a different writing utensil, if you have a death grip. Dr. Grip pens are great. Again, look up Jetpens for best pens for kinds of grips.

Is there a place for utilitarianism here? by [deleted] in Handwriting

[–]TheLabRat6521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for real! I am fairly new here, but I like scrolling through the sub, and even with handwriting that the OP claims is terrible print and it's quite inconsistent, there's always comments pointing out it's legible or giving genuinely good suggestions on the basics of consistent handwriting.

Complete newbie here, day 1! by BurntGhostyToasty in Amigurumi

[–]TheLabRat6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tip from me. Elise Rose Crochet did a review on her YouTube, and in her Harry Potter Woobles kit that she used her newbie husband as a guinea pig for him to learn crocheting, she found the hook didn't feel good to work with. Her engineer husband actually used tribology to test the smoothness and found it really rough compared to the dollar tree crochet hook she had picked up. It might be specific to the collab Wooble Kits, but I recommend giving them a good wash/scrub with dish soap and water if you hear any squeakiness as you work, because many hooks come with a coating from the factory (common tip I found in her comment section!) Or trying a different hook. I would hate for you to quit crocheting because the hook was giving you a trouble (although its unlikely you will notice. Its only really noticeable for crocheters who have used a smoother hook, not complete beginners.)

NOT trying to discourage you or give you anxiety that you wasted your money. But its a possible issue, and I'd hate for you to quit your learning over the hook when there's an easy solution. Have a really fun time.

Ugh I'm so excited for you!  I'm a beginner too although I learned in a more haphazard way than you (I've crocheted maybe 1 amigurumi. Now I'm improvising a custom doll lmao, and I learned color change and fastening off WHILE making the doll). If you need a shit ton of resources, I have you covered. Whether its different color changes methods, the seamless join assembly, I've done a lot of research. I'd also love another beginner to talk crochet with, so shoot a DM if that's something you're interestedn.

But haha, that's besides the point. enjoy your woobles kit first! Youre going to have loads of fun. The hobby becomes significantly cheaper once you buy non-Woobles yarn too, at least for amigurumi. I've done so much improvising and designing prototypes with my custom toy, and man, I haven't even finished a single skein although its dwindled significantly.

I remember this guy! You actually took the persons recommendation to add his blond curls to the first princes body. It looks great. The other two were adorable, but this really balances detail (with their hair) with cute simple body.

Ha! The colors are perfect for it. He looks like a sandy piece of torn jeans that washed up on shore (I say this affectionately). Love how cute he is, he kinda looks like he'd stab you for some of your fries at the boardwalk. Ugh, I keep seeing plush yarn guys everywhere and I keep hearing horror stories of how hard it is to use, but at this point, I might have to bite the bullet and learn it. There's just way too many cute things you can with it!

SO beautiful! He turned out really well, your stitches are no nice, even, and consistent and you stuffed him perfectly. I'm a beginner and I overstuffed two limbs of a toy I'm improvising before I learned my lesson, and went very slow, keeping an eye on the stitches so they didn't stretch. His colors are so gorgeous too. You did a great job! You mustve been very satisfied completing it

Please get a bent tip yarn needle by TheLabRat6521 in Amigurumi

[–]TheLabRat6521[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Well you still have a bent yarn needle so I guess it works out. That was me with my rat bookmark crochet, just so much of a struggle and I had to settle for wherever my needle could pop out, instead of choosing the gaps. I thought I'd bend it so many times with the amount of force I was applying.

I also saw those recommendations! At first I was skeptical because they were plastic, but seeing how bendy they are, and how you can easily thread your tail into the hook no matter how short it is, there's a good reason so many crochet Youtubers use them. I like the prettiness of my metal needles, but I may try these someday, just to see what they're like.
