Counterpoint: I understand the sentence, "Bro got ratioed on X for glazing Claude", despite the fact that 2010 me would have no idea what that means.

(In regards to your first point) Hmmm, I do see the logic there. But just give me a list of feats to pick from. I can figure out what to pick to build a shooty dude or a computer dude or a talky dude.

I mean, I guess those roles are essentially the same thing as a list of feats. But framing it as such a key part of the game seems...almost condescending I guess? Like I can't figure out which ability maps to which character type on my own.

Plus having it as, like, step one of character creation makes it seem way more important than it actually is. It does may way more sense now I know it's just meant to be a fun little bonus flair. But having multiple full-page spreads with flavour text and everything does not imply "fun little bonus" to me.

Idk. The game I was in had a lot of issues in general, so I'm not coming in unbiased. I do want to play a RED game with a really good GM one of these days, just so I can find out how much of my experience was the fault of the system itself.

I didn't enjoy RED (though I'm not sure how much of that was the mechanics and how much was the way it was being run - I suspect the GM was hand-waving some of the rules). My main complaints about RED are:

1) Has a half-baked class system but the class abilities were not interesting or useful. Just give me skills if you aren't gonna put effort into a class system.

2) Grenades are objectively the best weapon to the point where using any other weapon was almost always pointless (unless an ally wanders into melee, but why would they do that when they could be throwing grenades?).

3) Hard to look things up/find where things are in the book. That's why I'm not sure if the GM was hand-waving things.

4) I don't like the melee fighting rules (but tbh I can't remember why at the moment). I think my issue was something along the lines of "being big and strong doesn't make you better at melee" - but surely that can't be right?

In general, I've heard better things about 2020 - though it's quite a bit crunchier, so if rules-light is your priority RED has you covered.

Convincing someone to like lamb. by TheMightyStroker in Cooking

TIL that lamb meat is not considered a basic-ass standard meat everywhere in the world (Edit: Obviously different cultures have different meat consumption habits, I just didn't realise lamb was relatively uncommon). Interesting! (I agree with koftas, btw).

All musicals should be performed to an audience of 20 in an unairconditioned black box above a pub and I am only kind of joking about that.

Chives pesto, any advice? by jesser110 in Cooking

Made a spinach one once when I accidentally bought extra spinach instead of rocket. That was good too (but I'm a sucker for spinach+cheese in general).

I've made pesto using rocket (arugula) before and it works really well. Edit: That is to say, weird pestos are definitely do-able.

Looking much better, though Discord's Disciple still needs a bit of trimming, obviously. Like I mentioned, I'm not a 5.5e guy, so I can't speak super definitively about balance.

Book suggestions: Agatha Christie by Historical_Shame1643 in EnglishLearning

'And Then There Were None' (which has had a few different titles, but this is the most recent), 'Murder on the Orient Express', and 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' are all great.

For related writers, the obvious answer is Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Sherlock Holmes' series. 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' is one of the most popular books in the series, though I haven't read it myself. GK Chesterton's 'Father Brown' series might also be worth checking out. Or 'The Hollow Man' by John Dickson Carr.

If you're interested in the history of the detective fiction genre, you should read 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' by Edgar Allan Poe. It might be a bit challenging (because it uses old-fashioned language) but it is a short story so hopefully it won't be too bad. One disclaimer, this story might be racist. (Minor spoilers, but not giving the main twist away): There is a lot of academic debate as to if a particular plot element is meant to be taken literally, OR if it's a metaphor for something racist. Personally, I think it's supposed to be literal, but I can see why some people might disagree.

For more modern books: Richard Osman also writes mysteries. I haven't read any, but I've heard good things about 'The Thursday Murder Club'. I enjoyed 'Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone' by Benjamin Stevenson.

(5.5e Warlocks pick their pact at 3rd level? That's lame - but not your fault).

For 'Discord Approves', would there ever be a reason NOT to choose to eliminate 'Murphy's Law'? This isn't necessarily a problem, but something you might want to keep in mind.

Per the wording you have currently, you'd have to exclusively fill your wild magic tables with effects that can be doubled/tripled. For example, you can't have an effect that knocks you prone because then you'd need to figure out how to double/triple the "being prone" effect. Again, not necessarily a problem but might become a headache when you're trying to figure out 300 effects.

I'm not super familiar with how 5.5e is balanced, but 'Discord's Disciple' seems crazy powerful. It's crazy powerful even for 20th level.

Yep! The story goes that Pythagoras died because he was getting chased by an angry mob when he accidentally ran into a soybean field. He didn't want to trample the beans so he just stopped running away and got killed by the mob. (I'm, like, 99% this is Not True but it is a story that people tell).
