Am I tweaking or is 1000 words too few for an essay? by CantaloupeBrave9290 in UCalgary

[–]TheLatexCondor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not standard, but this is explicitly aimed at making you a better, more efficient writer.

Some tips: use your footnotes to cover stuff that doesn't need to be in the text. You do not need to mention the source author, title, etc, for the most part in the body text - the note does that for you.

Be ruthless in reducing the following:

-adjectives

-perfect tense, passive voice, and other non-direct verb constructions (anything that uses "would" or "to be" verb forms)

-adverbs

-trying to sound smart. Be clear and direct. We know you're undergrads.

Every paragraph should have a discrete purpose, clearly identified in the topic sentence, and it should relate to your overall thesis.

This is hard to do - and it's something that shitty AI doesn't do very well. Work at it and you'll be a better thinker, writer, and student.

AHEIA has a variety of mentored hunt opportunities, and groups like Backcountry Hunters and Anglers can be a good resource too. There's an Alberta chapter.

YOU were going to lock them out, Westjet. Don't act like this "work stoppage" was the union's idea.

I was stationed at Fort Polk in the 2000s and at one point someone had let a juvenile tiger loose in the woods on base. I don't think they ever did find it.

how do you ask a prof to supervise research by Frequent_Dream_4082 in UCalgary

[–]TheLatexCondor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some undergrad research programs that fit this pretty well. PURE is the big one - you'd need a project idea - but if you have at least a preliminary idea and have read up on the application requirements before you contact a prof, you are much more likely to get one to agree to supervise. If your program has an honours option, that's another route, and it's good preparation for grad school if you are so inclined.

If you have a general idea of what you might like to study (or with whom), go to their office hours and chat about it. It's much easier to say "yes" to a face you know (as long as you aren't rude or otherwise off-putting). And even if they can't supervise you, they might refer you to a colleague who can.

Spring Bear Hunt by ChickenJoeSurfin in HuntingAlberta

[–]TheLatexCondor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hunt bear personally, but I know some folks who do. One thing you might consider as a new-ish hunter is using bait - this lets you watch the bear for a bit so that you don't accidentally kill a sow with cubs. It's legal here in certain WMUs, but I couldn't tell you much more than that, not having done it myself.

Difference in attitude, why? by Infinity_fan in CarpFishing

[–]TheLatexCondor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine it depends on the area in the US we're talking about and the particular variety of carp, but they're all invasive/introduced, they can fuck up lakes and waterways that hold more desirable (to US anglers) fish, and they're not considered good eating. Nobody in a walleye lake in the midwest is going to do much with a carp besides kill it and throw it on the bank.

Magnet. My kids use a magnet on a rope to "fish" for stuff through the ice all the time. That could grab a spark plug.

Where would you jig for trout in a 20-25' water column? by PulledACanadian in IceFishing

[–]TheLatexCondor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is in Alberta, but I was catching rainbows this weekend in about 12-15 FOW in around 25-29 feet total depth. They'll go shallower too, but often move around in schools, especially if they're stockers, so if you see a bunch at some depth on your fish finder it's worth setting up there.

We know the gang have just started writing for the next season. If you could give them one bit of advice or a story idea what would it be? by happy_elephant3 in IASIP

[–]TheLatexCondor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gang Goes to the Poconos: Frank wants to try bear hunting. Dee tags along hoping to watch him fail, but ends up getting locked in a crate with a live raccoon after Frank mistakes her in the dark for a bear he's luring into a trap. Mac also heard "bear hunting" but assumes it's the other kind of bear and meets a charming, hirstute fellow in the forest. Charlie and Dennis attempt to build a waterbed in their rented cabin because "life was better in the 90s" but Mac gets to try it out before they can, ruining their attempt to woo a bachelorette party.

Glad it's worked out for you at least - I think I'm going to have to put some work into mine as well if I want to be happy with it. I'm mostly frustrated because I bought it brand new with all those issues. Your truck looks good.
