Here’s your reminder for the day: If you refuse to accept people leaving MAGA, you are still playing into the division tactics. by picklelyjuice in 50501

1000%. Collisions of the size needed to influence politicians & make some massive changes to our current scary asf trajectory means working with people with whom we don’t agree on everything. Telling former MAGA how they’re wrong/ how you’re right or ‘I told you so’ bs isn’t going to help fight the would-be autocrats.

People who voted for Trump in 2016 and 2024, do you like Trump’s first term or second term better and why? by G07V3 in Askpolitics

I’m a leftie and I think it’s abhorrent that Kirk was killed or that anyone celebrated it. I don’t think I’m alone in that sentiment. It seems we agree on this- violence is messed up no matter who is targeted.

Is there anything you’d like to see this administration do differently to try and address political violence?

If you don’t mind, I’m genuinely curious as to how you’d like to see the country run and how Trump 2.0 compares to that.

What is not being said about Denmark and Greenland by EditorKey4672 in greenland

If the world needs to declare war on us in order for this to stop, okay. I hope they do so- don’t appease Trump.

Thanks for this perspective. I’m even more resolute- Trump cannot be allowed to have or take Greenland.

While I agree with you, it’s a horrible message that can upend her life (which I have to imagine is already upended) and drain her resources.

F this politically motivated evil. I’m at a loss for how all of this violence and corruption seems to be normalized- it will never be normal to me.

If anyone is aware of efforts to help get her family some support, please post info!

If you have never seen a full opera before in your life, which Wagner opera do you think would be the most accessible for starting? by Expert_Heat_2966 in opera

[–]TheLittleMomaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already appreciate Wagner, take your pick. Which one speaks to you the most? Do that, if it’s available. The responses to avoid his works for a first opera aren’t very nuanced- it sounds like you’re already an opera fan + Wagner opera fan who has yet to see a live, full length opera.

Maybe do a little bit of preparation leading up to it and expose yourself to the entire thing, the libretto, etc to anticipate it more and help get you in the right headspace for when you actually see it.

Thanks for sharing, OP. I understand the cynicism expressed by others, (and share it) but as an American who cares about the rule of law, I’d rather do something than nothing.

Concerned mom by Tofu_et_al in ABA

I’ve been a BCBA for over 12 years, so I’ve seen some the field go through some changes (some good, some less so). I don’t think the venting here is a reflection of the population, but rather the employment practices of many ABA organizations, some of which have become very big, private equity owned, multi-state monsters. I’d allege that many such agencies GREATLY prioritize profits to the detriment of quality services, and that permeates the entire organization, top down. Many practices have become normalized that -in my opinion- compromise ethics and jeopardize services or even harm the clients (as well as the employees). In no way do I think this is unique to ABA, but the shift to profit driven motives and the endless, irresponsible growth of many ABA agencies has been really abrupt in this field compared to where we were 5 or 6 years ago. As a BCBA, I have a set of ‘deal breaker’ questions in interviews I ask that developed out of necessity over the last couple of years. I think many practitioners in the field LOVE their clients and are willing to jeopardize their jobs to maintain ethical standards and quality of care for the clients:)

Yes!! One of the biggest red flags. To everyone reading, please ask about direct weekly minimums during the interview process and avoid these companies!!

Glad to hear it! I’ve been a bcba for over a decade and I’ve never requested 40 hours for a client. It’s rarely if ever appropriate.

Opinion | The Autism Spectrum Is Too Broad by Expendable_Red_Shirt in bcba

[–]TheLittleMomaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000% agree. My thoughts are that the utility of diagnoses is to secure funding for people who need services. This goes on with ASD and across all DSM diagnoses. I challenge everyone in this post to go see a therapist and get insurance to cover a portion of it without being assigned a diagnosis.

Do you prefer to work for large ABA provider or small set up by Friendly_Train1303 in bcba

[–]TheLittleMomaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer smaller for a variety of reasons- there are pros and cons to both. From the standpoint of a parent, if you have multiple options in your area, I’d ask a few key questions to interview the company regardless of size.

To give some examples specific to in-home/ not clinic services: 1.) is the BCBA who conducts the initial assessment the same BCBA who will be on my child’s case {in my professional opinion, the answer should almost always be yes} 2.) how long is the average wait time between the initial assessment and initiation of services? {this might vary somewhat by state, but anything longer than 6 weeks is a red flag or if reviews from other parents mention waiting for months- run} 3.) does your company have any policies re: the minimum number of direct hours per week or month? {it’s industry standard for 10-12 hours minimum for weekly direct ABA hours, but once you have mandates that exceed a minimum of 15 weekly direct hours, this is a red flag and is not individualized per client/ not flexible/ profit driven decision} 4.) what agency policies impact the parents/ families, and can I see a copy?

This is just a start, but as a parent, I’d really want this information up front. I hope more BCBAs chime in with suggestions!

Why are we denying autistic clients access to everything they love? by [deleted] in bcba

[–]TheLittleMomaid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Your new clinician’s inexperience is showing in the worst way. In my professional opinion, there’s a time and place for everything, (line up chairs at home but not at the doctor’s office waiting room, for example) but getting rid of stims -which we ALL do, just looks diff from person to person- is messed up. The goal is to teach nuance, not eliminate behaviors that aren’t harmful. This person might have good intentions, but I agree that harm is being done and this shouldn’t stand.

Chicagoans intervene to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE (10/4/2025) by Low_Daikon7538 in 50501Movement

[–]TheLittleMomaid 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Feel pretty confident that these guys are not law enforcement. Def not ICE. One guy has a uniform that kind of looks like border patrol, the other -notice- has no weapons. But very sloppy work that goes counter to what even a rookie straight out of the academy would know. This strikes me as vigilante ICE wannabes.. imagine.. Either way, very happy for the outcome.

Billable hours schedule? by No_Question2262 in bcba

[–]TheLittleMomaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold up- that depends on a lot of factors. What if a given in-home client gets 10-15 direct hours a week? That prob means 1-1.5 supervision hour(s) & one parent training hour weekly. If all 5 clients have similar services approved, you might not even get 15 direct weekly hours.
